Boy I hope it doesn't look anything like that rendering... Frankly the C40 and XC40 are big and bulky enough. Would be nice to have an actual smaller car/wagon/hatch EV from Volvo. I was hoping for 2 doors as well, though I expected that to be too much to ask for.

EX30 was confirmed for the US. Subscriptions are currently sitting pretty high just like traditional leasing, but I'm sure it will balance out at some point.

As for the 40s being small inside, I don't think they are at all. Maybe the C40 rear height, but otherwise, very large for the segment. I prefer a small car myself, I know that's very unAmerican of me.

I'm really hoping this at least gets a range option near or over 220 miles. Especially since they announced better range on the xc/c40. I've been using a second gen leaf for the last few years along with the V60 so I'm hoping I can upgrade from the Leaf if the price is better than the xc40 recharge here in the states.

Well and they're doing a single motor XC40 as well that should bring the entry cost point down too.

Size is absolutely part of safety. The 5 start ratings are not against all vehicles... it's for other vehicles in the same class. You wouldn't want to drive a EX30 into an EX90.

My last new car was a Ford Fiesta. And I'm 6' and 280#... so not small. I don't look 280... but it might look like I enjoy a few beers, which would be correct. I just like the driving dynamics of small cars. I like wagons too of course, and think they make sense for a family car, but I own 10 cars... so I'm very much of the mindset of cars that are good at something rather than well rounded. A car to drive to work and back should be small and fun to drive for my liking. I drove a C40 from PA down to New Bern NC and never once felt cramped... and I drove that Fiesta out to central Wisconsin and was quite fine as well.

We are short people so I don’t need it to be big, but I want it to be safe (and safety is rightly or wrongly associated with size)

late 2023 xc40 changes some of my doubts (efficiency is likely on par with competitors whereas currently kinda poor). If ex30 has v2h or v2g that will also help a lot

personally don’t need long range. Anything reasonable will be a whole week of commuting. Range is what the xc90 t8 is for!

Since there is no official EX30 part of the forum figure I post a few interior images from carlesssthlm Instagram.

A few things to note: looks like the window controls are in the center console and like the VW ID controls you need to click rear to operate the rear windows. Also, the storage space under the armrest looks to slide forward. Hopefully having drinks in the cup holders doesn’t mean that you can’t access that space.

The Zeekr 3 has a sleek, lower front. The problem with this render is the blocky front. It's an EV and lacks the cool, low front of the Concept Recharge. Volvo should take the Concept Recharge's front and put it on their new BEVs, including the illuminated logo. This render just looks like a slightly shortened, updated XC40. And it's the best one, IMO, so far.

Volvo isn't knocking it out of the park with their new designs like they have in the last generation if the production car resembles this car. I'm not sure Volvo will appeal to young people if they go blocky like this.

A few renders from Autoweek Netherlands. Looks like a mash-up between the EX90 and XC40. Way better looking than the Motor1 which looked like a scaled down version of the EX90.

Sorry if this a repost.

It depends on how well it’s done. From an American perspective, General Motors did it well… until they didn’t. Over about 20 years it destroyed the brand equity of Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, and to a lesser degree Cadillac.

No doubt engineering a platform is far more expensive today. Here’s to hoping Volvo is able to continue having a distinct identity For its cars.

Yes so on the one hand you make more models using the same platform and behind the scenes / unseen by customer hardware. So economies of scale. But that only really works if you have those products in different segments otherwise (as VW and Stellantis (= Vauxhall/Opel/GM Europe/ Peugeot/Citroen/Fiat/Chrysler) have found) you end up competing for the same market segment and price with e.g. 3 vehicles of your own rather than 1 i.e. segment is 1,000,000 units a year and you've now got 3 cars in there vs competitors instead of just competing with one model. Harder to get the volume per model of your own to make investment back.

Smart and Volvo are in very different segments so that separates the Smart #1 from the EX30. I'm not sure what Zeekrs positioning is and how it differs from Geely or Lynk and Co or Geometry. One problem is the first Zeekr model (the 001) looks like a Lynk and Co as well! Geometry is Geely's EV only brand but not sure where it goes long term as Geely, Lynk and Co pivot to EV so what does Geometry become? Or does it disappear?

Speculate that Lynk and Co is a bit above Geely in terms of price and brand, Geometry is EV only for now, Zeekr is ?

Feels like it's starting to be too many brands....

Thanks medels

The overlap seems to be more for Geely, Geometry, Lynk and Co i.e. mainstream brands in the same space. So far Geely has remained in China, Asia and Middle East, same for Geometry (but less so outside of China) and Lynk and Co has led the company's move into Europe. Proton has so far re-branded Geely models for the Malaysian market but not further afield - and why would Proton be in other markets as there they are Geelys branded as Geelys.

Don't really see what Zeekr is and with them offering a large hatchback/fastback EV and next and MPV, sedan confirmed and an SUV I'm a little lost what they are as a brand vs Geely, Geometry and Lynk and Co.

Not sure what really distinguishes them one from the other....

Zeekr is high end, Geometry is low end EV. LynkCo will have mid-level EV too.
Volvo is luxury and P* is luxury sporty level.
Zeekr X (EX30, Smart #1 size) is just announced.
Geometry EV is based on old chassis, and don't know how long it will be kept.
All EVs will move to SEA platform as I can imagine.

The EX30 is luxury? I don't know.

The EX90 is on the SPA2 platform. Not sure about the future Volvos. Not sure what the Polestar 5 and 6 will be built on.

I don't like all these brands and Volvo basically looking like versions of the same cars of "lower" line brands. Volvos were unique even though owned by Geely. With an MPV that is based on a Zeekr and more Lynk and Co and Zeekr's looking like less expensive versions of Volvos, Volvo can lose that unique Euro brand position and just looks like it makes Volvo versions of a standard Geely family car. I'm all for Volvo using the shared platform if it is a good one but how is Volvo distinguished in terms of luxury, safety, etc. when there are very similar cars from another two brands in the Geely group? And how are they now European in feel when they have the same mechanicals as Geely and Lynk and Co? I realize L&C and Z are half Swedish but they look like Chinese designs and more suitable for the Chinese market.
