2007 xc90 headlights set to middle setting to have them off while driving

To eliminate the low beam being on all the time I can set the switch to the middle setting and that’ll just leave the running lights on with the headlights off while driving the car.
This will reduce the time the low beam is on and thus extend its life. However, when I was in the store, I came out 10-15 minutes later and I noticed the running lights were on with the key off in the car locked. Is this normal?

Yeah, with Vida, you can set the daytime running lights to be off in any setting for the halogen lights, which helps with HID retrofits or led bulbs since the daytime running lights will use a low voltage in the halogen low beam bulbs. The low voltage can damage HIDs and LEDs. They stay off in the off setting and in auto mode.

Do you need to have the subscription though to be able to apply things like this? I thought only access to some things was possible with an activated seat. Like sometimes people buy a 1 day license to activate keys. etc.

Anyone besides @ChitownV with a US spec vehicle have an idea how to do this easily without a software purchase and can demonstrate it in such a manner as normal forum members can follow?
It appears many other P2 owners have been doing this for years. In this thread, they mention in CEM> the Advanced tab > CEM, then clicking "programming control module."
Can personally only speak of the XC90 where the image is clicked, which may be different than other P2s, but I have only done this in the XC90.

Yeah, it works fine with 2011D. Thanks @hoonk for clarifying with the red arrow.

Programming daytime running lamps
Three different daytime running light functions can be programmed:
It is also possible to program daytime running lamp status: Always on, Activated by sensor and Off.
Daytime running lamp function
1. Low beam in all switch positions except the parking lamp position (Flex zero)
Position light switch:
OFF: Parking and daytime running lamps or Bi-Xenon lamps are activated based on the signal from the twilight sensor.
Parking lamps: Only parking lamps activated.
ON: Parking and Bi-Xenon lamps are activated.
2. Light switch works as follows: Off, Parking lamps and Low beam (Flexstd).
Position light switch:
OFF: Daytime running lamps are activated. If the twilight sensor registers insufficient light, all lighting is switched off (Bi-Xenon lamps are not activated).
Parking lamps: Only parking lamps activated.
ON: Parking and Bi-Xenon lamps are activated.
3. Low beam always on regardless of the position of the light switch (Flex low).
Position light switch:
OFF: Parking and daytime running lamps or Bi-Xenon lamps are activated based on the signal from the twilight sensor.
Parking lamps: Parking and Bi-Xenon lamps are activated.
ON: Parking and Bi-Xenon lamps are activated.
4. Stop
Restore the vehicle's default setting. For information on reading the vehicle's default setting, see Vehicle configuration, Low beam function.
Daytime running lamp status
1. Daytime running lamp status. Always on.
Parking and daytime running lamps or Bi-Xenon lamps are always activated when the light switch is in the OFF position.
2. Daytime running lamp status. Activated by sensor.
Parking and daytime running lamps or Bi-Xenon lamps are activated based on the signal from the twilight sensor. The daytime running lamp functions Flex zero, Flexstd and Flex low are only operational when the light switch is in the OFF position if daytime running lamp status is set to Activated by sensor.
3. Daytime running lamp status. Off.
Parking and daytime running lamps or Bi-Xenon lamps are not activated when the light switch is in the OFF position.
It is essential that the legal requirements of each country are followed.
Note! It is not permitted to change this programming in the Canadian market.
Read off the programming by clicking on the VCT2000 symbol.
To change the setting, mark the desired value from the drop down menu and start programming.
Select Continue.

edit: the quote above may be a general disclaimer, it wasn’t clear. However, you can make your own decision for your own XC90. The VIDA programming option is not limited for a Canadian XC90.

Note Canadian XC90 owners have been able to disable their daytime running lights. You have to plug in your own XC90 to really see your own specific CEM options.

I am linking again (to a specific post), the XC90 DRL disable thread and XC90 owners from Canada were able to complete the disable programming years ago. Post #12 says Canadian model and post #13 confirms DRLs programmed to be disabled.

Semi translated from Google:

I managed to turn on the switch to fit. In Vida (english version)
Diagnostics -> Vehicle Communication -> CEM tab Programmed values -> Daytime run light:
• Flexnoll (default) 0 is dipped beam on with the engine running, city light and 1 work as expected
• Flexstd Position of the switch corresponds with all functions. (0 is off)

• Flex length Dimicht is always on when running engine. (also in city light mode)

Interesting, I have 3 XC90s (05, 06, 08) in a DICE connected 2011D "hacked" VIDA with no entry for DRL in the CEM programmed values, only "Interior light, key". Nice thing about VIDA, once you read a vehicle it stays in the PC for reference.

@ChitownV, have you in fact made this change for supporting your HIDs or is it a hypothetical talking point? Please provide a screenshot of your vehicle readout for CEM if you can. No need to connect the DICE, just run VIDA without a DICE and bypass the warning windows to get to the optional values.

See Screen shots below from VIDA 2014D, First is a generic 2004 xc90 6cyl, then your 2008 V8 using your VIN - DRL option is moved to the "Advanced" tab, under programming the CEM.

Does that option show for your 2008 in VIDA 2011?

Yeah, please do. Push comes to shove, I'll go hard wire a DICE to my 2014D VM desktop PC version if needed, just to omit the VIDA software version from the equation. I think this might be just a US spec configuration limitation as I was pretty sure some Canadian forum members have been able to make this change directly via VIDA. I cannot.

Cool, then it's a VIDA software version thing. That was pretty easy to have properly answered, thanks.

Especially appreciate the visuals. I'm trying to see about loading up one of my spare laptops with a copy of Roxana's 2014D image instead of trying to drag the desktop over to the vehicles. My old XP Pro laptop is too old to run 2014 and it's been working since 2008 so I don't touch it normally. Will be nice to see all of the options in the 2014D version.

I haven’t used my VIDA in a while, but I think I have 2010 or 2012. Good idea to plug it into your XC90.

Yeah, from personal experience and trying to remember correctly, the module is read when the programming window pops up. It has to read the current programming so it knows what option to offer.
Edit: Connect Vida to the vehicle so the CEM module can be read and there is communication. To prompt the programming window and option, click the module image in the Advance tab.

It’s not a VIDA software edition issue as we can see other P2s, in the links provided, have been able to program the DRLs as far back as 2011.

With VIDA, plug it in plug it in.

Since my experience is with the factory halogen lights, now curious if it works for factory HIDs if that’s what @ggleavitt has.

#32 ·
So, a disclaimer like I mentioned. It could read that Vida won’t permit the programming so now it’s clarified the option is there for a Canadian XC90s.

#35 ·
Yup makes sense about legal liability and disclaimers. However, the option for the DRLs is still there in VIDA for Canadian XC90s. Each person can make their own decisions for their own XC90 and their region.

Here is a link about DRLs, which include information for different countries. Wiki on daytime running lamps
