I wanted to make a post where I could assemble the assorted things I've found regarding the Aisin TF-80SC Transmission and its valve body problems from MY 2006 to MY 2007. I developed it over in the XC90 forum and it's now ready for "prime time" here in the R forum where it will get more exposure.

Models affected:

2006-2007 Volvo S60R GT
2006-2007 Volvo V70R GT
2006-2007 Volvo XC90 V8 (All Trims)
2007 Volvo XC90 3.2L (All Trims)
2007 Volvo S80 V8 (All Trims)
2007 Volvo S80 3.2L (All Trims)

Transmission Wiki - "It is designed to handle a maximum of 440 N·m (324.5 ft·lbf) of torque."

The Technical Deficiency:

From this post some details about the problem:
What goes bad in the valve bodies is the bores in which the valves ride. They become worn out and cross leaks occur that no amount of reprogramming can compensate for. The TCM turns solenoids on and off to stroke valves to direct fluid to specific locations inside the transmission. When the valve bores are worn out that control of flow is no longer possible.
This thread, from user MnOpRacInG, shows a tear down of a failing valve body. The worn bores and valves are clearly visible, as demonstrated in the photos below:

Here's the TNN regarding the valve body:

(Dated: 11-09-2007)
TNN43-53-2007-11-09 Title: Valve Body: Customer Interest - A/T - Harsh Shifts/False Neutrals/Shift Flare
MODEL/YEAR:
2005- for XC90 V8
2006- for S60R/V70R
2007- for XC90 3.2 & S80

SUBJECT: TF80-SC, 6 Speed Automatic Transmission Fault Tracing Tips
REFERENCE: VIDA, TNN 40-02
Note: This TNN supersedes the previous 43-53, dated 12/21/2006. Information about speed sensor and valve body faults has been added. Please update your files.
This document summarizes customer complaints related to the 6 speed Automatic Transmission (TF80-SC) and should be used together with the information in VIDA.

Valve Body: The Valve Body should be replaced to address the following symptoms:
1. Customer complaints about 2-3 upshift quality. The shift may be described as harsh, or as a shudder. The symptom is usually more apparent during the first few minutes of driving after a cold start.
2. Customer complaints of shudder when slowing down, just before coming to a stop. The symptom may also be described as a harsh downshift just before coming to a stop.
3. Neutral condition in 4th, 5th & 6th gear; normal behavior in 1st, 2nd, 3rd & Reverse. One or more of the following DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) may be present in the TCM (Transmission Control Module): P073400, P073500, P072900, P089600.
4. Neutral condition in all gears except 5th & Reverse, usually with TCM P273300 set. DTCs for gear ratio(s) may also be set such as TCM P073000, P073100, P073200, or P073400.
5. Customer complaints of engine RPM flare at upshift or power-on downshift (kickdown) due to a worn modulator valve bore.

Note: Transmissions starting with serial number 06J and later already have the latest valve body which is designed to prevent these symptoms.

Replacement Steps (S60R/V70R):
Thanks Laird for the Walkthrough

"I removed the bumper cover, since that takes 5 minutes, this allows excellent access from below.
Remove air guide, both if you have them.
Remove the tranny coolant lines.
Remove the air-box, fake battery cover and IC to TB tube.
Remove front motor mount bolt (on top of mount)
Remove the pump on the frame rail by removing two bots and the whole bracket.
Put jack-stands under the rear sub-frame brackets and loosened the rear SF bolts.
Floor jack with a block of wood under the engine, bit of tension.
Removed front SF bolts to allow SF to sag out of the way.
Drain fluid (save or measure)
Remove VB cover (clean clean clean)
Take a few pictures, even though it'd be hard to screw up the wiring.
Don't lose the metal lock plate that goes with the top left sensor.
8 bolts (10nm) and you will get a fair amount of fluid when you remove the bottom two bolts and internal cover plate.
Clean tranny surface.
Install (the new one) and ensure that everything is hooked up and tight. Don't forget to get the shift arm and link hooked up on top.
Permatex (gasp) grey RTV $5.99 or the , "pick a manufacturer" RTV re-labeled as VOLVO, $$$$, your choice. Follow the directions. (Editor Note: Personally recommend Volvo Sealant)
Put everything else back together except what's in your way of refilling and wait 24 hours.
Fill and drive.
Smile at yourself in the mirror and/or pat yourself on the back.

How to find the transmission serial #:

On the R's, the transmission serial number can be found by looking behind the airbox below the intake tube. There's a metal tag on top of the transmission which has the serial number. It looks like this:

Image

There's a similar metal tag on top of the transmission of the V8's. Here's a photo which shows the location. It's taken while standing next to the driver's side wheel well of the XC90:

Also, from this post you can find the transmission serial number on V8's by:

"With a good flashlight on a cold engine compartment, stick your head over the near side of the brake fluid reservoir and look straight down.
White sticker with the SN. Just toward the front of the sticker (toward front of car) is the metal plate with the same SN."

I been having some issues with the tf80 in my xc70, did some fill and drains and it got a lot better, but then i had some flares again specially 4-5th. it seems to happen when the tranny gets real hot, like 95c and around there. Im sure i should get a new VB but before i throw all that money in, im wondering if i should try adjust the c3 solenoid from sonax's writeup. cept for the flares my transmission behaves very good compared to the issues i been reading people having.

Not really anything to lose to try right?

Can i adjust it with the valvebody still in the transmission or do i have to take out the vb to adjust it?
Do i have to drop the crossmember down to get the cover off to get acess?

Hi,

Long time lurker but first time poster.

I was interested in finding out if anyone has experienced the valve body wear issue in a 2007 XC90 diesel with the 06K TF80SC transmission?

I note the cut-off seems to be 06J, but some V8s with the 06K transmission appear to be impacted?

My car is throwing an TCM0051 error: "Lock-up solenoid SLU stuck in position OFF". The issue seems to be triggered under load when warm e.g. driving up a hill. The transmission is occasionally flaring and hard shifting also. "Transmission Service Required" is displayed. Tried several drain and fills to no avail - behaviour/error code keeps appearing.

I'm about to purchase a new valve body but want to be fairly certain it will solve the issue given the expense! My only uncertainty is that my transmission is an 06K.

Any guidance appreciated.

PS. Pulled out my old valve body - it's marked 06X on the serial number. Not sure if it should correspond to the 06K?

Thanks
Ramilio

This is a partial repost from MVS - I can't link to it as I'm a first time poster :(

Looking for help figuring out TF-80SC TCM software versions! Does anyone know what the latest software number for the TCM is? You can find your software number(s) using VIDA (Diagnostics>Network>TCM). If anyone knows they had a software update (or haven't) and have the time to check their number I would greatly appreciate it. I have attached mine in the screenshot, I have two, does this mean I have at least 1 update (no idea).

I am having the common 3-2 clunk and rare 1-2/2-3 slam shift at low throttle. Trying to get into Rolling Motors to have the VB checked/replaced but he is booked up right now. Recommended I update the software myself, but it seems you can't check to see if the latest version is installed without paying for it first. So trying to avoid paying $1-200 for nothing. Many poeple in this thread have said "check to see if you have the latest software" is there an easy way to do this that I am missing?

VIDA will tell you if an update is available

I am running 2014D offline. I believe you need a paid subscription and the official version for VIDA to do anything update related. However I'm under the impression that with the subscription I would still have to pay for the software itself to check if I'm up to date. Are you saying that with only a subscription VIDA will check for the update for free?

Yes thats what I'm saying.

Yes thats what I'm saying.
Thanks, I will try that eventually if no one can provide an updated software number. Wasting $80 would still suck.
Well, even if there isn't an update, there will probably be updates for other modules, you can buy a total can and get the car up to date in every way possible

Question as to compatibility of swapping a 2007 TF80SC (from an S60R) into a 2006 V70R - any issues I should be aware of or is it simply plug & play? Thx in advance.

I have a chance to grab a Valve assembly from a 2010 XC60 with the TF-80 FWD Trans... Would anyone be able to confirm if this is a compatible Valve body unit?

I'm seeing conflicting reports, some saying that ALL the TF-80 Valve bodies are the same.

@10:35 says that there is 2 different types.

Any ideas as to when the different types might switch over?

Any insight is greatly appreciated

Ok, Since no one else replied, I'll update my findings, and hope it helps someone else.
No, they are not compatible, there are indeed 2 different units I'm aware of. The later model has a lip surrounding the side of the solenoids, and has a 12 bolt pan with some ridges on in.

The one's from the R's and earlier models of TF-80's has no lip around the solenoids, as well as having a flat faced 11 bolt pan.

^^^^thanks for posting this information - greatly appreciated. I have both a replacement auto and a full manual swap kit and am still on the fence as to which direction to go. Time (which I have very little of) may dictate my direction. Are you planning on swapping just the VB or the whole transmission? Pulling the engine to swap or working around it? Thx.

#620 · (Edited)
I’m swapping the VB to an updated unit, along with the TransGo kit. It was relatively painless to do, just had to be strategic about how to separate the sections. Removing/sliding the upper halves with the plates, flipping over, sliding the plate off then moving to the lower section and repeat. I found sliding the plates off the sections best to keep from pulling up pieces and have them drop out. Kits done, just awaiting new gasket set from Cobra.

I plan to RnR In-car, i can only comment taking the unit out of an xc90 as I haven’t actually done my VR yet.
I had to drop the subframe, and pull up on the engine (the supports were removed prior to by someone else) and clear the way in front of the pan. The trans oil lines were in the way, as well as a brace. Swivels and various extensions & wobbles helped a lot.

My issues aren’t bad, just under heavy foot its a bit hard when it shifts. So if I’m just cruising it doesn’t show much, but on downshift. I imagine a refreshed/healthy VB and a fluid flush should probably take care of my issues.

Hello. I have a problem with shudder / vibration when accelerating. My Car is Volvo XC90 3.2 with Aisin TF-80SC production date 48 week 2007. The problem occurs in 2-3-4 gear. The car was taken to a specialist who concluded after a test drive that it was the fault of the torque converter lockup. The torque converter was regenerated and the symptom remained the same or even stronger. Please give me some suggestions. Could this be VB fault?

Adding data to strange VB issues - I have XC70 2007 (from April 2007), TF-80C is 06M and have had the VB and turbine change previously on 2017. Now, TF failed again, where the oil is not red/brown or even black, but silver, full of metal particles..
Plan to swap to newer than 06M. Anything I should be aware of? Is there any model that I cannot swap to (perhaps some changes made in 2010-2011)?
