Vida/vdash software

Hi everyone. I’m having some issues with the Vida software. I’m using a windows 10 laptop and have read that Vida should work in win 10. However, it doesn’t work without using a virtual machine running windows 7. Is there an easier way to do this? Doing it this way I can’t seem to get the drivers to load and recognize the DICE unit. If there is a different way, or different version of the software please let me know. Sorry for all the question but I’m new to Volvos and trying to learn all I can. I’ve been programming and tuning domestic cars for years and these cars are definitely different. Thanks in advance.

On mine, sequence is sometimes important:
1- Disconnect Dice from computer.
2- Boot/Reboot computer.
3-Connect Dice both connectors.
4-Start VIDA.
Try reversing 3-4 order.
Try a "Search" in this thread:

Ensure the VM is looking at the correct USB port. Triggering the USB port to see the DICE connection as mentioned by @Capndirk should also work.

Every time I have installed VIDA and "paired" a Dice to it (VIDA) - From what I remember - When you first plug the DICE unit into the CPU, windows has to go to windows update (I assume online) to find and install the drivers for the new USB device. The DICE unit must be powered up either with an external power supply or by being plugged into an OBD port in a car during that process for that to happen.

Did you go thru a method such as that when you first attached the DICE to your CPU?

Well I'm striking out here. I've tried everything I can think of and still no DICE. Sorry, couldn't help myself. Anyway I even tried downloading and installing the online version of Vida and purchasing a subscription and still no go. This is a shot of how the dice shows up. It's under ports. The DICE lights are as follows; firmware status light on solid, usb light blinking, bluetooth light on solid, and vehicle status light on solid. The unit is powered by a 12v power supply and not hooked up to the car. Any ideas?

Based on the device manager picture, I don't believe that's a "real" clone dice. Fairly certain that is the VXDiag "clone" dice.

Easiest way to tell, plug it into you computer WITHOUT the obd connector plugged in or your 12v supply - just usb. If you get a light and device manager detects it line above, it's a VXDiag clone.

If that's the case, google VXDiag volvo clone, you'll find the additional software you need to run to have vida detect it. I'm sure there's threads here about it, too.

Yes, plugged in just USB no power or OBD shows up the same way in dev manager.

DICE units are notoriously dodgy unless they're the genuine Volvo item. If the DICE hasn't been proven to work; that should be the first step. Get it tested on a working system. You have too many things going against your installation as it is. As Hoonk points out, the software is designed to work with Win 7 and IE 7. My setup once quit working because Windows updated IE to 9, and I had a hell of a time getting it back to IE7. I know; others have things working with IE9. Not mine.
As John notes, maybe try with a talking system connected. Power is one thing, but it may require a digital handshake. Also, don't expect Windows Device manager to recognize a DICE by name unless being introduced by software. I've had the virtual machine version as well as the native Win 7 installation, and I haven't needed additional software drivers for my definitely counterfeit DICE.

That's because you have a "Genuine" clone that was reverse engineered and resold as a clone.

There are new ones on the market that took the VXDiag chipset, put them in a dice enclosure and sold it as Volvo Dice - this would be more of a "counterfeit" than a "clone".

Here's an aliexpress listing, notice that there are two separate ones for sale - the "normal" version for $57.60 vs the "full" version for $135.96. One of them is vxdiag chipset counterfeit, the other is the reverse engineered "clone".

Believe it or not, the "clone" is pretty much identical to the geuine one, down to the CPU and same grade components. Only issue is they use the same dumped firmware for all of them, which Volvo has blacklisted the serial number on, so you can't use it for programming. Last I checked, VDASH has a service to change the serial number for like $30 bucks to one that isn't blacklisted by the mothership.
