Vacuum leak after pcv replacement?

Replaced the pcv oil trap on my 3.2. When it’s running and I remove the oil cap, there’s vacuum through that and the engine hesitates. It’s like I can hear a hiss on the driver side of the engine but can’t pinpoint it. Help!

Just want to double check, you installed a quality, entire unit PCV? If so, first I would do is double check your work. That the bolts are snug and gasket in place. I’ve talked to a few people who had theirs loose after installation.

BTW, what’s your maintenance history and mileage. You don’t have it listed. Why did you change the PCV in the first place?

Just an FYI, on the driver’s side, on the head of the engine, is a vacuum pump for the brake booster.

2013 120k. I replaced it because it looked like there was a little leak on the gasket on the passenger side. I installed the entire unit with the PCV already there. I’ve change the gasket on that brake booster vacuum pump before because it was leaking. I will double check, I was not able to find the torque spec for all of those bolts so maybe it’s not tight enough?

Yup. But regarding a hissing noise, if the PCV bolts are snug, vacuum pump has already been resealed (& no air leaks to hose), it could be the power steering pump, loose intake tubes, could be an alternator bearing, A/C compressor…or it’s time for the serpentine/cooling system service. I asked about the maintenance and a major service was not mentioned.

Could be time to read-up about the maintenance and when to do it.

Not sure if it is the same on the xc90 as it is on the p80 and p2's, but I had a leak a few years back on an s70, right after I did it. The intake manifold gasket wasn't perfectly lined up and there was a tiny leak. Light mist some soap water near the intake manifold gasket, see if it bubbles, use a flash light if it is hard to see.

I’ll replace the intake gasket when I do the alternator soon [emoji23]
