Hey All,

I just thought that I’d share this “must have” update for anyone with an 07+ XC90 that wants up-to-date modern technology in the console of their ride.

Firstly, here’s the link to the Facebook group that you must join in order to get yours:

Image
The tech inside this beautiful creation is among some of the modern Android tablets available in the consumer market, with wireless Apple CarPlay And Android Auto preinstalled. This isn’t a cheap head unit with a flimsy plasticy texture touchscreen… nuh-uh… this is a legit automotive grade head unit with the full 10.1” in glass. This version is the limited 6GB RAM version and it’s lightning fast, and looks like it could’ve been a factory option on these cars.
Image
Perhaps the biggest drawback about this unit is that you lose the OEM CD changer and Aux port, but the unit’s Bluetooth capability is beyond fantastic. The head unit includes (optional) an updated steering wheel control assembly, which must be purchased if you wish to keep the functionality of the buttons. It has a built in microphone for phone and Siri operation, has WiFi, and is capable of independent 4G LTE operation.

That all said, if anyone has heard of these units and wants to know more about them, please ask me here! I’ll be happy to talk you into buying one too!

The seller has units for XC90s up to '06. You have to give the FB group admin (the seller) all your info, like year, if you have factory GPS, if you want a backup camera, etc.

This has been mentioned in several threads but either way it is a tempting upgrade.

IIRC it starts at $600 USD or so but each one will differ based on the specific car and features required.

Pre 2007 cars will need to use a GROM interface. Newer ones tap into the aux port so it doesn't connect to the MOST network at all.

What he said ^

It worked out to close to $900 CAD for me. I still have to install the backup camera, though I’m undecided at this point as my rear parking sensors are working totally fine as of late. This has got to be one of the best upgrades for driver comfort and feature addition that I’ve ever seen. It looks 100% stock and works better than any factory touchscreen deck in a mid 00’s car. There is ZERO lag or delay when selecting apps or sliding between pages, the audio tuning ability goes from 6-phase to 16-phase, and it is totally expandable. I don’t have the premium audio in mine, but I have the “middle of the road” sound system, and the Legend has enabled it to compete with most stereos in new cars.

The guts of the radio must remain. The screen and the CD unit. They both tuck inside the dashboard! The CD unit fits behind the head unit (in models without NAV), and the screen portion fits in the side footwell panel below the shift lever. Part of the install is that the original stereo be set to “Aux” and the volume set to about 1/2 before the install starts. It’s really quite ingenious as far as design and system function goes!

I just received my Legend Audio kit this week, and while I'm eager to get this great looking equipment installed, I'm worried about the reverse camera installation based on the confusing instructions on the Facebook page (I guess I had assumed it would have been more of a plug and play for this portion of the install as well). My 2008 Executive V8 did not come with an OEM reverse camera or navigation, so I guess I'm running the video cable to the rear (I ordered the camera that is built into the license plate bulb housing replacement) and then splicing into something else for power? The diagram on the vendor's page also talks about soldering something into the rear of the wiring. Are there any additional and more specific instructions somewhere else on Swedespeed or YouTube that I'm missing?

I installed one in my '08 Executive V8, and I also did not have any OEM nav or reverse camera. I also used the same camera-built-in-to-the-bulb option. I spliced in to what I think was the cable for the reverse signal to the towing package. The seller shows splicing in to the reverse cable in the actual bulb area, but I liked my spot better. Mostly I just followed his instructions except for the rear power splicing, and the routing of the reverse video signal. I didn't want to put more cables around where the side air bags are, so I routed the cable along the floor under all the seats and through the center console. I did have to extend the cable a bit as going my route the included cable wasn't quite long enough.

Edit: some notes I took from my install: Legend Volvo XC90 CAR AUDIO

For those of us that still listen to radio stations can you still listen to them? I'm assuming so since the factory radio remains part of the system. You access the stations through the touchscreen? Can you still have presets? Pics of the interface?

Keep in mind this is basically an 8 core, 4GB RAM, 64GB internal storage Android tablet running Android 10 and the Android Automotive OS (not "Android Auto" mind you), and once in your hands is completely customizable with apps from the Google Play Store just as any other mobile tablet or smart phone. To answer your question, yes you retain your radio and have up to 18 presets on FM along with your AM radio, but can also add apps that allow you to play any digital radio station around the world, podcasts, and play music from the two USB attachments, for an unlimited music library at your disposal. Because it retains your original wiring, the MOST optical system, amplifier, speakers, and steering wheel controls, I feel the price that you're paying for the back end research, custom wiring harness, integration options, and package is worth it. Purchasing the identical tablet online would get you halfway there for half of the price, for comparison sake.

I have mine customized with the AGAMA Car Launcher for the "interface" as the one that ships with the unit is just "ok" as far as looks, and I prefer an even more OEM, Volvo look. The standalone music player that is installed on the unit also functions well, but is improved upon by any additional music players that are simply downloaded and installed on the tablet (I personally am using PowerAmp with an add on skin). Although Android Auto and Apple Car Play come pre-installed, I honestly have mine running with a constant connection to my phone's hot spot for any application updates and needed "live" data (navigation or weather) and use the unit as a stand alone system when possible, but as a Bluetooth-only connection, it works just as well if you decide to go that route and aren't using an internal SIM as a third available option that is also sold by the vendor.

I created a quick collage below with some images of the unit and my customization - other photos are available on the vendors Facebook page with the apps that come pre-installed. This is all within about an hour of me having it installed, as everything is very intuitive, and once you start installing apps, you basically have everything you can imagine running on this device (weather, navigation, web browsers, video, email, games, etc, etc.), The real challenge is not messing with all of this stuff while driving, as we all know that's the issue with today's drivers.

These bad boys still for sale???

The group is still active, you have to join and then private message the admin and he gives custom quotes due to car differences, regional differences, features, etc.

Still can't bring myself to bite the bullet lol.

Hey guys I’m new to the group and looking to upgrade to a new modern system.

However I’m wondering how this system is different to those on eBay such as

‘10.1" 2DIN Touch Android Car GPS Navi Stereo Radio MP5 Player FM Mirror Link OBD’

10.1" Ultra Thin Android 8.1 2Din Quad-Core 1+16G Car Stereo Radio GPS Wifi RDS

Would love to hear from somebody that has more specs on the Legend or who may have tried one of the above.
Thanks :)

In case you are pre 2007 owner I think that you have no other options left (if you want to keep audio quality and functions). I have a 2006 XC90 model and i am considering these day to buy one of these units. My cd player has a "Deck Error" and can't play cd's so i am limited to tuner. This is good, but when you drive somewhere in mountains...it is not working. With this unit i will have everything (navi, mp3, wifi etc) that i need from audio system + it looks really good. :)

I have been looking long time for the missus S8D5 2009 to get a proper interface and came across this!

I have a V60T6 2011 and want a large screen too and can use vDash and a Volvo DiCe unit to implement something , vDash from T5D5 Forum.

If you message the admin on the Legend Facebook group he can give you the details of what a package for your specific vehicle would cost. But yes, it works with an '04 XC90 without nav.

My Legend is installed in a diesel D5 2006. Overall it's an upgrade to std by a long way. However, I must be honest and say to anyone considering it, take the time to understand what's important to YOU about your stereo. For example, great bluetooth for streaming off Spotify was my number 1 priority. I didn't think I'd ever listen to the radio (traditional radio) again. Whist I can stream just fine, and I love the multiband equaliser to combat my knackered old hearing,
I've ended up missing the radio cos it's so poor. I have rear camera but the first failed so I bought the same again and that too failed due to moisture ingress, so I miss the rear parking sensors! My have been disconnected as 'I' failed to understand how you set up the factory stereo BEFORE you remove it and can't go back! As I say, my mistake there.
The supplier is genuinely super helpful, but he has a bit of an odd attitude to his 'baby'. No one, but no one, is allowed to post anything he interprets as non-supportive. No proper discussion is allowed, no images of the rear of the unit are allowed & no suggestions as to how to improve it are allowed either. This, considering it's just a basic Chinese Android base he's built on, seems plain daft so I left the group as it offered me nothing but regimented responses when I needed proper deep understanding. IMHO it could be SOOO much better, sooo much easier to install, soo much easier to use & to own if that were the case.
I'm currently having real issues trying to use a dedicated data sim so I can use Google maps but I suspect I'll just plodding on till I get fed up and swap it for a full on Kenwood, Panasonic or whatever where the hardware is actually designed for use in cars and not kinda cobbled together. TBH I feel I'm not a normal user per se which is why I say at the top make sure you KNOW what you want from it before shelling out an awful lot of money.
Happy to answer honestly any questions people have where I have genuine experience ;)

I agree with you on everything. There is one "but"...people who have Models of XC90 prior 2007 have no other choice if they want to have some kind of decent car radio. I am talking about replacing broken one. I would have been more then satisfied with the genuine radio. Since mine is broken, have to consider the replacement.

If you plan to use the built-in cell data connection you need to double check if the bands that your cell provider uses are supported by the hardware. There's a post on the page that shows which cellular bands it supports. It does not work in a lot of places. But using your phone as a hotspot is pretty easy to do, or using Android Auto / Apple CarPlay. I generally just use wireless Android Auto.
