Anyone hooked up a dashcam to the 12V outlet long term?

I am trying to find a fuse to tap the dash cam too. I found the 12V outlets but they constantly are 0.25V while the car is off.

Wondering if this will be enough to cause some parasitic drain while the car is not driven in a few days?

If not this fuse then where is a good area to tap into?

I personally have not done it, but might look into the center mirror or sunroof wiring harness.

This company has been making Y-splitter pigtails for the mirror power, but doesn’t make one for the Volvo. It’s a good idea that’s also clean.

Below is a Volvo thread on a dash cam install. While this member wants continuous power, the thread goes over the what is needed for (ignition) switched-on power. You could try running a fuse-pigtail (add-a-circuit fuse) in an unused/open fuse location in the dash fuse block, then wire under the A-pillar trim to the top of the windshield. Confirm the open fuse location is switched on/off.

One thing I do like is power that is turned on when there is a trigger, like the lights turning on with the door unlocking. This way if I am loading groceries or the ignition is switched off when pulled over exchanging info from an accident, there is a time where the dash cam will keep on recording. I have this in my BMW using one of the DC outlets located under the dash. I haven’t looked into doing the same with the Volvo. Who knows, maybe it’s not monetarily feasible, like adding a door/alarm chirp.

I know that some dash cams have batteries or capacitors so it will keep on recording for a few minutes after power is turned off. Capacitors are better because the batteries tend to overheat with the windshield sun exposure and black cam housing absorbing heat.

Good luck. Keep us updated with what you end up doing.

I have dashcams permanently plugged into both the center console and the rear cargo 12v outlets and often leave my car without driving for a week or two. Never experienced any issues with the battery being drained because of it.
