Ive seen a bunch of different threads on here about oil choice. I believe Volvo recommends either and hoping the higher viscosity would bring back some compression on a 200k plus mile engine. Any thoughts appreciated.

Edit: So I dont have to reply to everyone I will swap to 5w40 at the next oil change. Did 5w30 this time to keep with what the car had but it seems 5w40 is better. Thanks!

I'm using Rotella T6 5W40 in my 240k bottom end, no issues at all. Does great.

(I bought mine at 200k and have ran the oil in it for 40k miles of ownership w/out issues. Knock on wood. I forget what the PO was running, I want to say M1 something or other, but I stopped running M1 in all my cars years ago when it became a synthetic blend.)

When it comes to choosing oil it depends on the hottest oil contact surface and less about ambient temp. For anything turbo it has to be a 0/5W40 oil and 5W40 should be okay for most freezing winters. Rotella T6 5W-40 or Rotella 15W-40 are excellent then Castrol Titanium 5W40. For these older cars the best is 306 Swepco 15W-40 if you don't have freezing weather otherwise the Swepco 308 5W-40 are my first choices for oils.

Have used Swepco on and off for 25 years in higher mileage or in oil consumption issue cars. In 2012 I purchased a 98 S70 T5 with 230K miles. I used Swepco for the two years I owned that one. Reduced the oil consumption and made the 230K motor buttery smooth. Also, used the Swepco 714 20W transmission fluid for a full flush. The car would glide quietly down the road till you exercise the turbo. I do frequently stock up and test other oils.

Depending on your driving style every 6 months / 5K intervals or 12 months / 3K a year. The letter was given to me from my local Swepco Rep while in CA.

I've been running 0W40 during the winter (NY) in my 2.5T w/ 200k miles and 5W40 during the summer. Burns a quart every 4-5k miles. Of course, once the M56 swap and tune is done, that consumption might increase a bit. 😁

Where I live, it is hot year round and I have put Castrol advanced synthetic 10w-30 since 32k miles and the car is at 105k miles right now and if you do your oil changes regularly it can do wonders to your engine. The engine is just like it came from the factory, no varnish, minus the normal wear on all the moving parts of course. I know that the Volvo's owners manual say to use 0w-30 and to adjust accordingly with the driving style, geographic area, and etc.

Most oils today have a decent additive package so changing it regularly at lower mileage intervals should help most cars. For turbos however it's best to go with a 0/5W40 since the oil is lubricating the turbo regardless of one's driving style. You'll also feel the performance difference in hot weather.

FWIW,I live in SE Wisconsin (hot summers, cold winters) and run 5W-40 as well. 170k miles. Used to run Total Quartz Energy 9000 and now I run Liquimoly Leichtlauf High Tech.

The Swepco 308 5W-40 and Rotella appear to be advertised as diesel engine oils... To clarify, those of you running these are running them in petrol engines?

I'd be open to trying them in my 2004 2.5T....

Yes, have been using Swepco 306 15W40 and 308 5W40 since the early 2000 when it was a lot cheaper. Running Rotella T6 5W40 since 2012. Here are a few of the vehicles. 98 S70 T5, 00 S70 SE Base, 02 V70XC, 02 CRV, 03 Odyssey, 03 S80 T6, 03 GS300, 05 GS430, 08 C30 T5 M66, 09 S60 2.5T AWD & 12 XC90. Found Rotella was excellent and decided to use less and less of the Swepco due to cost.

Just recently purchased a Close Out Stock of Swepco Products but they didn't have the 308 5W40. Am using it as an additive meaning one bottle per oil change of 306 15W40 or 502 Oil Improver with the Rotella or other motor oil.

Didn't get a chance to change the oil in the 09 S60 2.5T AWD during Thanksgiving so put in a bottle of 502 Improver. On the way back to school in another state Son noticed a huge difference in quietness and smoothness in the around 5K miles used motor oil.

Also, trying Rotella 15W40 for the first time during summer and fall while using 5W40 for the winter and spring. Overlapping season due to access to car so the Rotella T6 15W40 has been okay for the N Carolina winter thus far. About to change it out to the 5W40 at Christmas time.

Definitely give it a try in your 2004 2.5T!

Between now and next oil change (I just changed my oil) can Rotella be used to top-off my "normal" full syn petrol engine oil? (This whole concept of running diesel-designed engine oil in my gas engine is still somewhat mind-boggling... lol! )

My 2.5T gas engine tends to burn a couple quarts between oil changes....
