I would suggets to keep the original.
I bought an android on AliExpress for my volvo and some of the features didnt work , like steering wheel commands, car Audio (it needed to be connected to the AUX IN).
Anyway it was well designed.

I have a TEYES unit I need to install (while doing center console swap from base Aluminium to Modern/Linear wood as well), and probably the same kit as @bs-volvo. Plugs into existing harness, passes audio through the AUX channel.

Another one I've been eyeing is the Connects2 "infodapter" kits. AFAICT, instead of the base Chinese "OD-VOLVO-01" kit that forwards climate info to the android headunit through a dedicated serial connection, the Connects2 interprets more of those CAN signals into a video signal, that is fed to the aftermarket headunit through the reverse camera channel
Connects2 - Vehicle Integration (full kit with double DIN fascia)
Connects2 - Vehicle Integration (same, without fascia)

The install instructions have a bit more detail on that "infodapter" interface - basically mimics the base Volvo interface you'd get in your original screen, into a signal hooked into the reverse camera channel of the new headunit
Image

Also interesting is the install wiring - I still need to pinout the "Amplifier connector" to figure out how exactly the audio signal gets passed to the audio system (bypass or not the amp, base kit has MOST loops so definitely not through MOST)
Image

From the install diagram, AFAICT, the "interface box" hijacks the amp, and sends audio signals from their "ISO connector" to their interface box, that actually does the amplifying. I would also worry about the CEM not being happy about the AUD and IAM modules being disconnected, but who knows.

Anyway, if the chinese kit isn't good enough, I'll probably add the Connects2 CTUVL02, to get the infodapter and better audio controls. Worst case scenario, I could write some custom software to interpret the CAN signals and forward them to the headunit through the chinese serial protocol those boxes seem to use, but I'd rather not go all the way to that 🙃

Hey @Glennda5id !

I'm in the process of installing the unit, but I wanted to do modifications to the harness I bought first:
  • The harness hijacks the car's AUX IN to pass its sound to the car's amp. This is OK, but I wanted to pass the original AUX IN to the new headunit's aux input, so as to still be able to use that port.
  • I also wanted to route the car's USB port to the new headunit, so that I can use the larger touch screen to interact with. The car's USB is directly wired through automotive-grade USB connectors up to the IAM, so a short adapter from automotive USB to USB type A will work fine.
  • As well as the car's FM antenna to the headunit
  • As well as the car's GPS antenna to the headunit

One could use additional antennas for GPS and FM, but I figure it makes sense to reuse the car's. I'm not willing to splice anything into my original harness, so I'm re-building the adapter harness I have.

So I bought a broken IAM module and a harness to use the connectors from (IAM - grey large connector, to get the car's AUX IN to the headunit, and the USB from the harness). I still have to do some soldering and cleanup, as well as figure out how to get both the GPS and FM antenna Fakra connectors plugged into the headunit.

AFAICT the car's antenna is phantom-powered to 12V (white Fakra connector - FAKRA + HSD) so I need to figure out if that would fry the Teyes unit before plugging it in, as well as build an adapter for it (double female Fakra to DIN radio antenna jack).
As of the GPS, it seems to plug into the RTI box that's a bit further on the right of the dashboard, from the volvo EWD, but those aren't very detailed, so I might need to dig deeper.

I still also have to figure out how I'll mount the original screen to the glovebox, as it is required to keep it for multiple reasons (MOST termination, not throwing error codes, etc).

On the TEYES unit specifically, I'm very happy with the speed of the unit, configurability and overall quality. I've got another, cheapo android headunit from whichever brand was on sale on Aliexpress that day, and that doesn't even come close, software and hardware wise. However, the Teyes CC3 unit I have comes with a major disadvantage - it doesn't have AUX OUT (line-level left/right output), which is what the XC60 harness I have expects. I was planning on using a USB-powered DAC anyway, so as not to rely on the internal amp (FiiO Taishan D03K - Convertisseurs sur Son-Vidéo.com), but you could also use the pre-out RCA 5.1 jacks, and pick either Front (left/right) or Rear (left/right) to pass to the amp's Left/Right input. The Teyes support wasn't clear on how they build that signal, so I'm sticking with my separate DAC.

Feel free to ask if you have anymore questions ! I'm knee-deep in documentation and EWD at the moment, so if I can help, I'll gladly do it :)

Hi I am from China with a 2016 XC60 B5204T9 5cy,
Last month I add a wireless Carplay Box to it by myself, I think it is very good for a old style volvo.
The good stuffs are:
  • Non-destructive installation, just plug in the cable connector and hide the carplay box to copilot side
  • The orignal LCD has adjustable brightness and display quality is good and its resolution is also enough for Carplay
  • Well embedded into the original system, can be controlled by steering wheel buttons. switch bettween them smoothly by exit key or other function keys
  • wireless connected everytime you get into the car
  • Carplay itself brings high quality music and navigation apps that a driver really need
The only things that are not perfect:
  • Powered by the ACC Power, so works weired when only electricity is on(engine off)
  • Seat heating and volume indicator not appeared on the carplay screen
I really enjoy it, and use Siri to navigate or play music every time. It seems the phone battery also drops very slowly in Carply mode since screen is off.
Let me show some pics here

@lelithium
You are definitely in deep! I am an EE and used to have the energy for this stuff....

Are you using the teyes adapter or the InfoAdapter you referenced above?

I have a 2013 which I think uses the newer style teyes adapter (Option B on their site). I don't think I need to keep my screen around, but I do need to keep the module plugged in. I put a teyes cc3 in my Honda Odyssey, but that was the good old fashioned wiring except for stuff like rear camera and steering wheel controls which I had to manually highjack and wire.

Neither - I bought the Teyes unit standalone, I didn't see they offer a XC60 kit. My harness + fascia plate came from an Aliexpress vendor named "skyfame", but it's sold by many vendors. It's the "OD" style connection box, I know there's at least two other types, which I think offer the same functionality (BSJ and RZC). I don't know about posting links in this forum, but the Aliexpress product ID for my harness is 1005003798415016. My harness came with three male/female connector pairs, one large-gray (headunit), one small-gray (my screen model) and one green (older style screen). The screen connectors only tap the CAN signals, so I got rid of the green pair. Also, as I said, the harness isn't ideal, as it doesn't expose the car's AUX IN through RCA to pass it to the headunit, which would have been a couple more cents of copper and connectors - too bad. USB also isn't integrated. The connectors are also not original, meaning they fit, but might require a bit of sanding on the side so that they go in all the way properly without resorting to a lot a force to plug them in. Overall, I'm still happy with the kit, as it's a good starting point, and the fascia looks great, but it definitely requires a lot of massaging to get it to a proper "plug and play" point that retains more than the base functionality.
Basically all these "canbus boxes" from Aliexpress have either one or two CANBUS transceivers, read all the messages, then output some semi-standard messages through simple serial to the headunit. I say semi-standard, because this isn't really documented AFAICT, but I've seen people claiming they were able to add missing signals, etc by dumping the firmware on these boxes and customizing it.
Next steps on my end are to buy the antenna double FAKRA to DIN, and GPS FAKRA to threaded connector on the back of the headunit.

Thanks @someluo ! Definitely appreciate the feedback, as well as the detailed pictures ! Those are always great for reference :)

I considered the carplay box, but in the end decided to swap to use the opportunity to get a larger screen, so that I have more GPS/media screen real estate to play with.

I notice you are on Aux up top on the display is that. Is that how the Teyes radio works? Did you move the Fibers on the back plug to the Teyes plug?

I'm follow this discussion without success...
I have a 2011 XC60 without 6" screen and bought an android radio from AliExpress, it works but it doesn't sound.. Is the only way to pass through the AUX in?
Someone can help me and said which cable and plug I have to use? The top small screen and the clima/radio control have the same plug, but on the android radio harness there is only one plug like this, where do I to connect it?

[ZAŁĄCZ=pełny]181470[/ZAŁĄCZ]

[ZAŁĄCZ=pełny]181469[/ZAŁĄCZ]
