From about 10:40 to 12:10 you will see the woman clearly going around 60mph for several seconds on the highway without touching the wheel or pedals. She even mentions she has nervously tested it and it amounts to autonomous driving. The segment cuts to a Volvo product manager who then specifically notes your hands have to be on the wheel and there is a limiter at around 31mph, which is what I had understood this whole time. However the footage with the lady shows different.

Is this some bizarre exception for a review/demo unit?

Well yes, we can argue about it being a misuse, more to the point is how she was able to pull it off. I thought there were warnings from the system if it recognized you were "abusing" its features.

There are warnings but she either did not see the message on the screen or chose to ignore it. After 3-4 "bounces" off the lane markers, the DIM will display a message "steering input needed immediately".

What happens when there is still no user feedback, especially at those speeds?

Don't expect the car be so intelligent at this stage. It may run some more with the help of ACC and queue assist. However nothing is guaranteed and eventually road condition becomes worse and it will go off the road or deviate into other lanes and crash with whatever there.

Pilot Assist steers the vehicle actively while controlling the throttle and brakes to maintain the set distance/time to the vehicle ahead - semi-autonomous driving. Pilot Assist is active only up to 31 mph and hands must be on the steering wheel else the system will disengage.

The woman is actually using ACC and Lane keeping Assist (LKA) at 60 mph. ACC maintains the set speed and time interval to the vehicle ahead, but LKA doesn't steer the vehicle the same way Pilot Assist does. It only nudges the vehicle back into the lane and issues a warning if it assesses that the driver is about to leave the lane unintentionally. It doesn't require hands on the wheel, but steering is the responsibility of the driver.

Key distinction:
Pilot Assist - Vehicle steers, driver must be ready to intervene if necessary
LKA - Driver steers, system will only intervene if necessary

So why doesn't volvo promote pilot assist more ?

Cant think of other cars with this feature right now. What package do you need for pilot assist ?

I think this is a very useful feature in busy traffic. The everyday commuting could be slow but very stressful and this assist helps a lot.

How to prevent abuse of it is an important thing. Enough warning is a sure thing but seems no better options to prevent abuse.

Anyway, the driver is the last resort. If driver abuses the car, nobody can help.
