Transmission Behavior: Downshift slip (VIDEO)?

I've been experiencing the common issues from the AWTF-80 SC transmissions. I've owned my S60 for about a month and I'm concerned about the longevity of the transmission. The car currently has 78,000 miles. The transmission serial no. is 0000000000000000000012C3826266.

The issues I'm experiencing are:

From a static position (at a stop light or stop sign), it'll take a second or two for the transmission to engage, resulting in a thud or jolt.

As I'm coasting or slowing down, the downshifts are very noticeable (not smooth).

When I accelerate, causing the transmission to downshift (captured in video), I've noticed the tachometer will dip momentarily. Is this a sign of anything or normal behavior on these cars?

If it hasn't been done, have your transmission fluid changed and have the software updated for the trans.

My 2005 S60 has a previous generation 5 speed Aisin transmission. The car is now at 122,000 miles, and the transmission works well across the entire speed range. I have done two partial drain and fill, of the transmission fluid. The first, 3 quarts, was at about 108K, and the second, also 3 quarts, was done at 112K. I am using Valvoline Synthetic Max Life transmission fluid, which is what Valvoline recommends for this transmission. The old transmission fluid was brown, not really dark, but clearly oxidized. Since new fluid has been added, I have seen gas mileage, around town, short trips, increase from about 23 mpg to about 25 mpg. I make no claim that old, thickened, oxidized transmission fluid is causing your issues, and I make no claim that a partial drain and fill will make the unit work well again. Other people have reported smoother shifts after changing the fluid, and some people have reported problems with their transmissions when the fluid was flushed and replaced. Partial drain and refill seems to be a more conservative approach. My car has none of the symptoms you describe above.

My 2013 S60 has 53,300 miles and I had the dealer do the drain and fill because I was having the jerky downshift and the surge from a standstill. After the fluid change and reprogramming, it is very smooth. They told me they were recommending a fluid change at 50K.

Interesting ! Same here with my 2014 S60 T5 when I come to a complete stop 🛑 I feel like the transmission goes into neutral and when I release the brake pedal the transmission engages about 2 seconds later giving me this harsh kick. I also noticed that when i am slowing down I could feel the down shift from 3rd to second gear ⚙ Pretty rough. Hopefully it’s an easy fix. Please keep us updated.

I plan on calling the dealership tomorrow about my concerns.

For those who have watched the video I uploaded, is the momentary dip during a downshift abnormal or am I nitpicking at this point? Should I bring this up to the dealer tomorrow?

I want to enjoy the car and keep it for a while (150,000+ miles). There are just some things that trouble me, which impedes the joy one receives when getting a new vehicle...

Agreed. We've had updates done on two cars and the improvement in drivability was dramatic.
