Sticky/tacky steering wheel...what did you guys do about it?

Ok, so I know Volvo used some materials on the P80s that have degraded on many of our cars over time. I've seen the window switches get sticky. Well, my steering wheel is sticky...as in, my hands stick to it, especially when it's hot and humid out. As you would imagine, anything that's on my hands, then sticks to my wheel...it looks awful.

Has anyone figured out a solution other than the DIY wheel covers? I'm going for something that can look factory stock. I've seen the stuff from Redlinegoods.com...but haven't talked to anyone who's tried them.
1997-00 Volvo S70 steering wheel cover - R (redlinegoods.com)

I've lusted after the optional wood steering wheels from the factory, but know that they're like hen's teeth.

Is there anything else I'm missing that's a viable option?

I’m in the process of re-dying a steering wheel for my other car. If that goes well I’m going to give my Volvo one a go.

Basically sand it down, fill in the cracks with leather filler, sand some more and then re-dye it. According to YouTube it should come out pretty nice if I take my time and do it right.

If yours isn’t too far gone, that could be a good option for you.

Its probably all the years of accumulating dirt. I would try scrubbing with a mixture of Dawn and water. Wipe off and repeat several times. Keep your eye out for V70XC's at the Junkyard. Some were outfitted with the half wood/leather wheels. They look nice but the grip diameter is smaller than the standard wheel.

I put on a Wheelskins cover years ago. I have been very happy with the appearance and feel. It makes the wheel slightly thicker, which I like, but otherwise looks pretty close to factory. IPD used to sell them, but now it looks like you can get them from Amazon.

My trick is to use a bar of Pearl soap and a detail brush. Get a bowl of warm water and a microfibre, wipe it down and let it dry, then wet the brush and rub it into the soap, like you’re making shaving soap get it nice and foamy. Then circle the wheel with it and wipe it down with the same damp microfibre cloth and let it air dry.

100% spot on. I found this video online and couldn't say a bad thing about the result I got, so I did all my cars and new steering wheels I got. Works wonders.

@TrstnBrtt is right. The suggestion given works VERY well and doesn't cost much or take a ton of time.

Skip the redline cover it’s really poorly made
This was my suspicion...

I put one of these on an XC I owned years ago, because of the same sticky/tacky issue. It's just not what I'm looking for.

So, this will stop it from being sticky? Or this will just wash off the dirt from my hands that's sticking to the wheel? I can and have washed it...I don't have to do this to any of my other cars...I would like to not HAVE to do it to this one...

What kind of steering wheel do you have?

For a regular S/V70 wheel, you can get a Wheelskins cover in the AXX size. It fits and feels great! Sand is a good color match to my 3990 interior. Here is a picture but, mind you, it has worn down a bit after 5-6 years of use. For $50, I have been very happy with it.

If you have an R steering wheel, those are already thicker, so the AXX size will not fit, and I doubt the larger C size would either. But here is a relatively decent solution. I just installed this on my 99R because of the same issue as you - sticky steering wheel. No matter how much I washed/sanded/cleaned the wheel, the stickiness remained. So I bought this cover from Amazon - Belinous Leather Steering Wheel Cover. Size M5. Fit is good, but not as perfect as the Wheelskins, and it does make the wheel even bulkier - not terribly so though. It's as thick as the sport steering wheel in my XC60.
I didn't do so great on the install and will probably redo it in a couple of months. But hey...this one is just $17. Worth a shot or two.

I replaced my coupe wheel with a base model wheel that was in almost flawless condition. I got it at my local LKQ for $40, and it was so much better than the gooey one.

I have since replaced that with a custom one from ViVa/Royal (can save ~$200 if you go directly through Royal in the UK) and its great. Cost me probably close to $500, so depends on what your budget is
