Live timing here, I run last thursday and friday afternoon. GS
http://sololive.scca.com/

So I pulled the trigger and registered to go to Nationals despite some hardships at work that are going to make it very Difficult. Hoping to draw some serious attention to the S60 for Volvo there. I'm the heaviest car in the class by a large margin. The internet Forum's have written the car off as to heavy despite being .142 off the current national champion at an event back in March. So lets Fingers Crossed and Pray for Rain (only AWD car in the class). I gave up on trying to get a set of shocks made, Time and money were a big factor. I made the decision to purchase an exhaust only to talk to Viva and find out they are 8 weeks out with Nationals 4 weeks out. So that made that decision very easy. Instead I'll spend the money on testing different tire combinations and alignment settings. I picked up a set of the new V2 RS3 today in a 265 front and 235 rear (as they aren't made in a 245 rear) and had them shaved to be the same outside diameter. Going to test them vs the Dunlop DZII's which are currently 275/245 combo. Got a buddy who works at a vinyl shop that said he could wrap the car to look like an aussie V8 but we will see if that comes through. See if I can bring a Solo Championship for Volvo in the underdog. I managed to get the same Number I was last time I went when I won a National Championship!

In Autocross it's fairly common to share a car with a co-driver. Back when we ran hoosiers the co-driver was the 1st of the two drivers and used his first run to warm the tires so the co-drivers 1st run isn't a throw away. But now that they have switched to street tires the warming of the tires isn't really needed. Co-driver helps to share expenses and give extra feed back for changes you want to make in grid between runs. Peter has been my co-driver and friend since 2004. He owned the 911's I race back in the early 2000's and ran on the one lap of America. He's towing the car out for me so I don't have to miss as much work. He's really very good with setup. He was crew chief when I ran the Runoffs in 08 and has been very very helpful in getting the cars setup. He's always been very good with cars is doing this.... then do that. The S60 there isn't so much of that because there aren't many changes that can be made. But I wouldn't run with any other co-driver. ex

In car video from last national event in it. Not particularly exciting since you can't hear the engine.

Got the RS3 V2's mounted up. Quite a size difference front to rear. Test them latter this month.

So just got back from the test day. Was a bit disappointed in the results. The dunlops despite being a year old were equally as fast as the new Hankooks. The dunlops with the stiffer sidewall aided turn in a ton and made the car far more responsive in transition. The hankooks made the car feel numb. The The car also rotated nicely on the dunlops and despite playing with pressures A lot I could not get the car to rotate on the Hankooks, it only understeered and understeered badly. I know from other peoples testing the Hankooks are the faster tires......... not on this car. It needs that sidewall stiffness from the Dunlop.

For anyone who cares that wants to save time from their own testing.

Dunlop DZII (80 runs old)
50.5
50.8 (made mistake)
49.7 (+1 cone)
50.2
(did not make note of co-drivers runs).

Hankook RS3 Version 2 (bran new shaved)
50.5
50.4
50.3
50.0
51.9 (tires were hot and fell off bad).

I ran the Dunlops first so I knew the course better once I put the Hankooks on. I fully expected to go faster having learned the course and the tires being newer. Surprised the times were essentially the same. I felt I probably could have got to a 49.8 clean on the dunlops. Final run on the Hankooks were not cooled as we ran out of water in our water sprayer. Massive difference as to how much they fell off HOT.

I got the mention as the 2nd on the pick to win.... got called the dark horse...

Still a bit worried about the car's lack of pace on Concrete as opposed to it's pace on Asphalt so I'm still praying for rain. I think a Win in the dry is going to be very hard.

Are there any other competitive AWD cars? Or would rain give you an "easy win" (I know there's no such thing really, but still I gotta ask...) :D
