Retrofitting 4G Module

Hi,

New android base cars now have remote start etc. functionality. This was unavailable when I bought my 2018. I believe this means Volvo now has the servers/infrastructure in place in my country. Therefore, does anyone know if it's possible to retrofit the 4G communications module? It was missing from my build (because the infrastructure was not available then). Personally, I think leaving out modules because the infrastructure isn't available at that point in time is an awful practice, but here we are.

Thanks
Ray

The MY16 XC90 T6 did have remote start via VOC from the beginning in those markets where VOC was offered and available. I recall VOC was not available in several markets, but I do not recall which ones nor when it became available.

The issue of retrofitting the 4G modem is a good one for MY17s+. However, the 4G modems upgrade is a separate issue and are not yet available to MY16 XC90s, but hopefully will be in 2022 [edit: ... to replace the existing 3G Modem in MY16s. Not sure how this could play out if there was no modem at all. Worth asking once the 4G upgrade becomes available].

FYI: The MY16 XC90 T8s, on the other hand, did not have remote start functionality via VOC available until starting with Week 46, 2016 production at least in the Canadian and US markets. I had remote start functionality installed to my MY16 XC90 T8 in May 2017. I recall that it was three software upgrades. Both TJ 32592.1.1 (VDDM and PBL) and TJ 32440 were required to be performed via S39820 and QB39820 service campaign. (3,912 cars in the US and 754 in Canada were affected per the Service Bulletin).

MY 2018 has a Sensus system and not Android Automotive.
The Sensus system has the same remote start function, etc.
It didn't need any infrastructure, Volvo simply didn't have a contract with local GSM operators. This is the case in many countries around the world
Volvo does not have servers by country but uses a GSM system
Upgrading is probably possible, but you need to count on a cost of $ 2,500-3000 for parts, plus work, you need to install a new installation, you need to replace the existing antenna on the roof, software upgrade etc.
Is it worth spending $ 4k-4.5k

Hi!
Did you try to check with your local dealer that Volvo on Call service is actually functional now? If it is then I would recommend to check that it's possible to make a subscription for this service. Can you use your own sim-card in the car for the internet connection? If you can then I think the car is equipped with VCM module which also provides VoC functionality. Though there's a question if this module has VoC eSIM programmed.

You may wish to monitor this fairly active subforum and thread. It is mostly about the MY16 XC90 3G to 4G upgrade which is a Volvo initiative that many of us are keenly watching.
