Play in steering wheel

So as the title stated I have play in my steering wheel, but when pulling it towards me and pushing it away from slightly i have no play which makes me think it doesnt have to do with the bolt behind the air bag. Does anyone have any thoughts? Its not leaking power steering fluid so I dont think its the pump, and also when turning the wheel I get a plastic on plastic sound from inside the car NOT outside like a wheel rubbing or something like that.

The nut behind the airbag is likely the culprit.

Play when you turn it like as if you are turning the wheels? Or play as in it's jiggling right to left as if you're pushing on it without turning? It's mounted on the steering column with a spline, so even if the bolt was loose if you have rotary play like you're turning it then I doubt the problem is in the wheel itself...

Inner and outer tie rods and front bushing on front lower control arms will affect steering feel directly. Also your front subframe bushings will have an effect. If you replace/upgrade all of these you will have very sharp steering assuming that something is not wrong with the steering shaft/rack which is less likely.

Yeah from what you described that sounds like that's probably it. I have polyeurethane front lower control arm front bushings. They sharpen up the steering feel substantially. Also get the IPD subframe bushing inserts or Delrin subframe bushings if you haven't. That will also help a lot if you still feel like the steering is too vague.

Yeah. That doesn't sound like the nut.
