Leaking from 3rd row pillar and roof

I have a 2016 XC90 Momentum. We purchased it Certified Pre-owned in October 2017 with 29,000 miles on it. It now has 42,500 miles.

I searched and found many threads on leaks from the sunroof, drain pipe etc. So obviously leaks are a known issue despite the customer service rep sounding surprised when I called.

Today when I opened my trunk at the end of the work day I found water dripping from the pillar in the third row on the drivers side. The trunk mat (plastic) was filled with water, the carpet on the side wall and in the cubby was drenched, and the ceiling had rings of water. The water was dripping through the 3rd row seatbelt opening as well.

I am taking it in tomorrow afternoon for them to "look at it" and "see if they can find a problem". My questions are what can I reasonably expect from the dealership? I do expect the fabric on the roof replaced because that is obviously stained.

I am worried about the carpet of the cubby and sidewall. My daughters water bottle leaked in my old car and I felt like I could never fully get rid of the mildew smell. Will they replace the carpet?

There is obviously water in the 3rd row seatbelt mechanism. With all the sensors do I need to be concerned the water will affect them? The safety of the 3rd row was a very big part of why we bought this car as we use it frequently with carpooling and sports. Can I ask them to replace the seatbelt mechanics?

The stain is currently not at, but spreading to the speaker in the ceiling. Could this affect the speaker?

For those who have had to have repairs due to a leak, how long does it usually take? Our closest dealership is 35 minutes from home, an hour and 15 from work. I'm not sure that they provide loaner vehicles and I think they only have a shuttle to the local shopping center. I really can't be without a vehicle and don't want to spend hours in the dealership with my 12 & 7 year olds.

Thank you in advance for any advice!

Here's video of the actual leaking. Please excuse all the kid noise in the background and my upset voice. I was really surprised to find it after all this time (at first I started blaming my girls for spilling another water bottle!) Plus it was my younger daughter birthday and dealing with cleaning up put a dent in our birthday plans.

Hmm... video is too large to attach. I wonder if this will work.

There is a bulletin for an updated seal kit for the sunroof cassette. This will likely need to be installed, as well as leak checking the cassette itself.

The headliner might be able to be cleaned. If it can, warranty covers it. If not, replacement is also covered.

The speaker will be fine, it is located in the roof, not in the headliner.

The seatbelt will be fine too, but they can clean out the connector when the panel is off (it comes off to drop the headliner).

The carpeted panel won't likely be replaced but I wouldn't expect any odors. The carpet there isn't exactly plush and absorbant by any means.

Absolute worst part about beige interior is if the head liner gets wet. It was down pouring here one day and some water got on the pillar. Left a damn water stain. Absolute pain in the ass to clean. I got it perfect only to have it happen again. Gave up and just made it acceptable. It's very very hard to blend it in to the rest. You literally have to clean the ENTIRE headliner from back to front and works towards the windshield to get right.

Even then it can take multiple attempts.

Sorry to see that. Call your dealer, and ask for a loaner car. Especially under warranty, they should provide you with one without an issue. As far as the water damage, it would not be wrong to ask them to check out the seat belt mechanism that got wet. The carpeting I would not worry about at all, as it meant to get wet and dries easily. The headliner, that could be another story as you might see the water marks. Lastly, pop open the compartment that is shown in the picture. That is the battery. Batteries get wet in most cars while under the hood, but I don't remember if there are any other electronics in there without looking. My other car has the fuse box back there but on the other side.

+1. When my 2016 leaked (3+ trips and multiple TJ attempts) they kept it about a week at a time. The amount of labor payed by warranty was 5.4 hours- I believe they spent more on it diagnosing, taking apart etc..

We had the same problem with our 2016 XC90. The repair took about two weeks (some wrong parts came in and had to be reordered) and they provided a loaner the entire time. The headliner should be replaced. If they balk, just demand it. Our dealership never planned to try to salvage ours and I don’t think you can when water has been pouring into your car. We have had no problems or moldy smell issues since they repaired it. This is a well established problem with a well established fix, you should be fine.

I noticed water in the exact same place on the pillar as pictured above, but on the passenger side. I've had my car for 2 years now and never noticed it before. I think if it leaked before I would have seen it because I use the back of my car everyday for my dogs. I was parked facing up an incline. I thought the water was from opening the hatch and it pored in as the hatch opened. It seemed like a lot of water as the plastic storage bin had a noticeable amount of water in it. I've been watching it ever since. After reading this post I'm thinking mine is leaking too. Luckily I took pictures of it that I can show the dealer.

Being parked up on an incline would cause it with the old seals. The seals go between the back of the sunroof tray and the body of the car. The old ones didn't properly seal, allowing water to overfill the tray and get onto the headliner. The new ones seal it better so the water is directed to the drains. So you probably need the updated ones as well.

Chalk up one more as having this same problem. I park my car on a slight incline in the driveway (front end elevated) and hadn't noticed this issue before, but came outside the other day and had a pool of water in the trunk. I could trace it up to about 2/3 of the way up the driver's side rear pillar, but couldn't find the source. Dealer said he suspected sunroof drain tube. Don't know if there's something lost in translation here, but I believe he suspected the sunroof drain tube had an issue, not necessarily the pan. At any rate, it will be in the shop for 6 days minimum, so about a week while they diagnose, wait on parts, and (hopefully) fix the issue. At least they gave me a loaner. Still... this is usually an issue with older cars after the drain tubes clog up with dirt and debris. Kind of amazed that this could happen on a brand new 2018 which I've only had for a 6 weeks.

Keep us updated with what your dealer does/says. My driveway has a slight incline with the front of the car facing down. The water seems to leak from whatever end is facing down the incline. Mine leaked from the IntelliSafe box behind the rearview mirror, like many others.

It's becoming VERY clear that is not just a 2016 issue as the service advisor is claiming. My dealer verified that I have the updated seals so I am not sure what else can be done if this happens again. Your feedback will be helpful.

Well, the water leak has REAPPEARED!! It still drips from the Intellisafe box behind the rearview mirror.

My 2018 was at the dealer just 2-3 weeks ago because of this. The dealer said they poured water over the car and the car even sat in the rain, and no leaks. They said they removed the headliner and verified that I had the "updated" rubber seal kit that is used on 2018+ models and was the fix for the older models. For those where the dealer spotted the kinked hose, can you share the location? I want to see if the kink is the the same location for everyone and then I can point the tech to that location.

This morning marks the 2nd time it has leaked. The 3rd time... the dealer will be keeping this car for good. Can someone elaborate on this tub modification so I can bring this up with the dealer? Is there a bulletin number I can reference?

Also, anyone in the D.C. area have this problem and if so, what dealer did you take it to?

Thanks in advance

When my water leak occurred, mine leaked in the rear and led to a puddle in the recessed cubby on the passenger rear side. I took it to Fairfax Volvo and have had no leaks since the repair 10 months ago. Maybe try them for the repair?

Thanks. That's where I took it after the first incident. Do you know what they did or what they found to fix the issue?

I see you have a 2016. I have and 2018. In your case, they more then likely just installed the updated rubber seal kit. They "supposedly"started using the new kit in 17+ models. The dealer removed the headliner and verified that I have the updated seal kit, so they are not sure what the issue is.

I've had mine less then a year so I will give them one more shot. After that, they can keep it or put me in another one.

My repair was to replace the sunroof tray/tub. The sunroof is not completely waterproof so the Xc90 has a tray to catch whatever may leak through and then it drains out. The new tray/tub is apparently designed to ensure the leaking water doesn’t spill over when the vehicle is on an incline.

By the way, my service rep was Steve.

I'm also in the DC area and I also took mine to Fairfax Volvo. Mine leaked from the rear as stated above, but despite the recent deluge, it doesn't seem to have reappeared. Talk to Melvin there (although I suppose that's probably who you dealt with before). This is the sort of stuff that's unbelievably frustrating on a new car. I hope you get your leak fixed. Have they checked other areas like the windshield seal? If everything else has been fixed, it might be worthwhile to look at a different seal for the leak.
Thank you for both of your replies. The more info, the better.

Hopefully, the tub fix is an option. I will mention that to the service advisor. Cmb6s, you menioned that this tub was redisigned for 2018. Since that is what I have, I am curious if replacing it will do any good. I have not dealt with Melvin yet. Just a service adivsor. Is he someone higher up? I have not checked anything. I'm leaving it up to them to find/fix the issue. I do know after the 1st leak, they said they removed the headliner and looked around.

Thanks for the TJ number!

I have a 2016 XC90 Inscription and haven't experienced a leak yet. Does anyone know if dealerships will proactively perform this TJ or do I need to have an actual incident occur for them to do repair?

Also, is it an invasive fix? Do they need to rip the entire roof headliner apart? Concerned if this may cause other issues (rattles, misalignment, etc.).

The dealership has to verify the concern in order to complete the repair.

They do take the headliner off but it should be fine assuming the technician puts it back correctly etc.

Erika910, did you get the leak fixed? what was the solution?

I had the exact same issue but on the passenger side. I purchased my 2016 XC90 used from Rusnak Volvo in Pasadena in Dec 2018 and saw this issue after one rainy day where my car was parked on an incline with the passenger side lower than the driver side. I would imagine that I would see the leak coming form the driver side if the driver side was lower than the passenger side. Long story short, the dealership was able to fix the leak. Here are the official service notes:

CAUSE: 27
98727-2 ROOF HATCH ADJUST ACC. TO RTJ31272 (2)

PART#: 32216220 SEALING STRIP

PARTS:
54409 TRJ - 31272 - - CHECKED WATER LEAK AS PER RJ AND PREVIOUS RO#651424. FOUND MOONROOF LEAKING AND WATER ON REAR CARGO AREA. REPLACED SUNROOF SEAL AS PER RTJ-31272.

Hopefully folks who run into this issue can reference the notes to get a clear solution to your leak problem. It's been mentioned in various threads regarding leaks of this nature but it looks like the fix is a "ROOF HATCH ADJUST ACC. TO TJ31272". Good luck everyone!

Our 16 XC90 is leaking thru the Intellisafe cowling under the rearview mirror. We just purchased it 2 weeks ago as a CPO vehicle.

We brought it in once and they installed tthe weather stripping but it is still leaking in the same location.

I'm curious for those who had to take their vehicle in more than once what the final fix was to stop the leaking. Thanks.

McKlee revived a 13 month old thread where OP hasn't responded since April / May 2018.... I hope within that time frame the problem was resolved....But this thread is otherwise informational, since OP is awol.

I got the same thing on 2017 XC90 T8. Water leaked from the roof antenna. They tested by seal around with 3M tape. They fixed by applied the new set.
