Getting out of my car this morning, I felt something catch my finger tip when I was opening my door. Took a closer look and it appears the chrome/metal coating is peeling/flaking off. Very unexpected...especially in a vehicle that is this not that old. I don't even think my 10 year old Cavalier ever had peeling trim pieces and we all know 90s GM interiors were garbage....not sure 2000's interiors were much better.

Has anyone gone through this with a dealer for warranty before? I just had my car in the dealer last week for an AUX battery replacement. Wish I had noticed this then.

The exterior chrome trim on the door handle on my 2021 was flaking similar to that. It was covered under warranty. The 2017’s started on one of the door handles… but that’s way outside of factory warranty. If you’re under the factory warranty, I suggest taking it in. I think it will be covered. I recall others having this same issue.

Chrome Trim Peeling Off

Noticed about 2 inches of chrome trim loose and peeling off on the driver side passenger door. Is this is a covered fix at the dealer? Anyone else experienced this?

XC90 chrome peeling by shifter

2018 XC90 with about 30,000 miles. Today I noticed that the chrome adjacent to the shifter is starting to fray a bit. Almost feels like it's a chrome sticker over something else. Anyone else seen this?? Hard to see from the picture but it's the thin chrome strip below the starter knob...

Center Console Trim coming off

The aluminium trim started to come off, in the center console and unfortunately cut my finger as it cuts like a razor... I would like to ask for your opinion, if this is a warranty issue. Many thank you.

Mine did that in the same spot just didn't get that bad. Dealer covered under warranty.

 

Sorry to hear that! Are these handles plastic with a bit of chrome paint on them? They feel really lightweight despite their metal look

 

More of a chrome metal overlay over them, than paint.

 

Our 2016 XC90 Inscription had the same thing happen on both front interior handles. My son grabbed the handle wrong and sliced his finger pretty bad, had him bleeding and had to find bandaids. Seriously terrible quality control on a touch point and a safety hazard now too.

 

I’ve already had one exterior handle replaced for flaking on the 2021. Now the chrome started flaking in front of the shifter. There are sharp pieces that will slice my fingers if I’m not careful. I’m guessing it’s either a cheapened manufacturing process where Volvo will claim some environmental impact.

Funny thing...I have a 2008 SAAB 9-3 Aero with 145k and the door handles look the same today as it did the day I purchased the car. Probably why SAAB is no longer in business. Better quality parts. Good for the consumer, bad for business.

 

This happens to Saabs too, hate to tell you.

 

I have a 2020 jeep wrangler. The driver side interior door handle "chrome" started separating. Very sharp. Cut my finger pretty deep. Until I can figure out the best way to fix it I've put a piece of tape over the tear to keep it from cutting me more. My warranty ran out a few months ago. I'm going to take to the dealer any way and see what they can do.
