Always wanted a Volvo turbo wagon and finally it happened. 1996 model in green. Needs a little work here and there but overall in great shape for near 300,000K. Mostly doing work it needs for longevity before I think about enhancements.

Clean and beautiful -- it's aged well. I always loved those rims! Congratulations.

Thanks all. Part of the Volvo club now.

As for the paint it's really good all round however there was some kind of chemical splash on the hood and on part of the roof before the sunroof. So there are splash marks that have eaten away at the clear coat. Don't know if that means a complete repaint of the hood and roof, probably yes. At the moment I'm addressing the internals. Need an ABS module as my ABS light is on. Also need a new battery and I should probably do the heater core as well (with that a new coolant reservoir and hoses). PCV and timing belt were done but not the water pump as previous owner said it looked to be in good shape. Rear hatch panel is loose so I ordered a kit from IPD to address that. Front seats have considerable wear and the only option I can see is getting some kinda reupholster that takes into account the SIPS. Rear seats are near mint though so that's good. Accelerator pedal feels a bit stiff and low to the floor. Hopefully that's a simple adjustment or perhaps just the nature of the car. Want to get a new stereo head unit. I'm thinking a single DIN with a pop out screen, so hopefully I don't have to carve out the rails. Finally I'm thinking she'd look sweet with some gold rims to complement the green paint. Probably going to find used 16" rims and paint them.

Anyways, the ride is so luxurious compared to what I'm use to and I'm still trying to figure out what all the dash buttons do.

Looks like a nice find!! Expect a decent amount of work ahead of you, there will be lots of tired parts at 300k, so the paint might have to wait a little til you sort out the mechanical ;) You could try wet sanding the clear coat first before going for new paint. For seats, try for junkyard replacements as that would be a reasonably priced swap. Throttle cable could be a bit stretched but it's hard to say, if it bugs you over time then it's more worth addressing.

No, there are very cheap options to DIY if you take your time and have modest skill. Most of what you will encounter, I recently did (or will soon!). I don't mean to be a Debbie downer; chin up and it's going to be great! look here:

Somewhere in there (not that long) is a DIY or link to seat re-finishing. Post pics of the interior and we can help. It can be done.

Very nice, the 855 turbo has been a dream car for me also for a long time. I recently picked up a V70 T5M. It has 227k. Expect to have some worn out parts. What you have got for yourself is very similar to what I’m doing. Check everything that’s rubber. Mine turned into an engine removal and swap. Engine out will give you a clear look at everything. It wasn’t hard, for me it was the first time doing a front wheel drive removal. There are a lot of great resources and people here to help. Looks like you’re in Canada, so thats around 186k in miles, which isn’t high at all. Have fun with your new toy

lseat.com has replacement seat covers pretty reasonable.

Gonna address the front seats and hood paint eventually. Brake fluid is good. Probably should do all the other fluids. Hoses so far seem in good condition, some have been replaced already. No idea the shape of the the turbo, haven't even pushed the car hard yet. Can anyone recommend good summers or 3 season tires on a budget for 16" rims? Also I'm on 50s right now, I'd like to go up to 55s but some people say they rub, others don't. I guess that depends if the springs have compressed over time.

I just researched this and I'm getting ready to put 215/55-16 Hanook Ventus 2 Concept 2 tires on 16" Perfos for my 00 XC. I think yours would likely take 50 or so as the XCs had taller tires than the S70 or straight V70. They are a well regarded tire at a good price point. And you can get a $100 rebate at a GM dealership through the end of April (and they will price match the lowest prices around you). They are the lower end of Hankook's "performance" segment but well regarded. I am going to use them as summer/fall tires vs. snows the rest of the time. I can get a set after tax installed for $335 (and after rebate). I've had other Hankooks on other vehicles and been very pleased with their performance in all regards.

GM will give a $100 rebate on any set of Hankook, Bridgestone, Pirelli, Continental or Goodyear tires through 4/30. I've searched and nothing I have found has the performance/price competitiveness of them. They offer lesser rebates on other brands, also.

EDIT: Oh I just recalled you're in Canada. I don't know if GM does it there but you might check.

To help you answer that, I'd explain how I would think (others would obviously have different answers, so no absolute right answer). To me, that would come down to the following points:

a) What does the tire sticker in the door well say was stock fitment?
b) How bad are the roads where I live?
c) How much do I care about handling?
d) How much does speedometer and odometer error bug me?

I don't know what a) is for your car - I heard they changed it like you said but don't know if they re-calibrated the instrumentation. For me, b) is "pretty good, not bad at all," c) is "more than average," and d) is "it bugs me." So for me, I'd go with 50 profile 16s, or even 45 profile 17s if I could track down some inexpensive wheels. The speedometer error 205/50 vs 55 is 3.3%, which is not huge, but enough I'd continually notice. It's on the bubble of the conventional wisdom of acceptable deviation and is not "pushing" it.

When I lived in northern Vermont (harsh winters, lots of heaves and road issues sometimes), I would run as low as 50 profile but no lower (different car, not one of these). I found that an ok compromise of ride quality/handling/security that made me happy. I never bent a rim in a lot of aggressive driving, but I don't know if these Volvo rims are supposed to be particularly soft and more susceptible to bending.

Stock is 50s, after the bent rim complaints it went up to 55s. Roads are not great where I live (small town) so that makes me lean towards 55s. As for handling well I'd always prefer better handling. Speedometer and odometer difference i'm not too concerned with. 215/50/r16 seem a superior fit however these are a rare size.

First - Make sure that everything regarding the coolant system is up to snuff. The thing you ever want to do too one of these aluminum " white blocks " is overheat it. Nothing like cast iron. Don't forget the little coolant hose for the turbo on the back side of the engine.
On my to do list is the heater core, hoses, reservoir. Though at this moment it doesn't appear to be in need of such I'm thinking best to do it for the future reliability.
