Clunk in Angle Gear or Transmission

I've been noticing a loud clunk/clang(?) coming from under the car when applying the gas after coasting (same thing happens if I let off the gas quickly into a coast).

I jacked it up earlier today to replace some aging sway bar endlinks and when I took off the front drivers side wheel the axle bolt came with it. I was initially relieved thinking this was the source of my problem. But then I went under to check things out, I discovered that I can reproduce the clunk by twisting the driveshaft and by spinning the front wheels. Spinning any of them and then abruptly stopping creates the noise.

I had the angle gear resealed about a year and half/30,000 miles ago, replacing the collar sleeve, and everything looked fine there.

Any thoughts?

Same thing happens with Haldex bypassed?

Yup or engage Parking brake a click so the light turns on.

I feel like my R does this too although I haven’t driven it in 7 months lol. I think it’s probably the lash in the driveline being taken up. Unless your motor/transmission mounts are bad.

Mounts should be good. All have been replaced except the rear hydraulic.

It does feel like slack.

From underneath the car could you tell if the noise was roughly closer to the bevel gear or axle? When you go from park to drive or reverse, can you duplicate the clunking?

Sounds like the angle gear or transmission where it connects.

With both wheels in the air and in Park, I could reproduce the noise (albeit quieter) by abruptly spinning the front wheels or by abruptly twisting the prop shaft going to the rear.

I do have clunks going from P, D, and R, but I'm pretty sure I've always had that, haha.

Ok, I think I'm in the clear. After driving it around yesterday things sound much better. The loose axle bolt must have been the major contributing factor. I can still reproduce the clunk noise, but I have to try hard to make it, i.e. from a coast give it a quick burst of gas and then immediately let off the pedal. Since I don't normally drive this way I'm not concerned, and I'm going to assume it's just normal driveline lash!

Lower torque is the newest of them all! But I'll double check.

Does the axle ping sound travel down the length of the axle? I ask because it really sounds like the clunk is central

It looks like the GKN is sold out everywhere.

Anyone have any experience with iPd’s aftermarket variant?
