I am trying to remove the drive shaft on my 05 AWD. The rear CV won't come loose from the differential. Is there a trick to this ? I am guessing rust is holding it in place. Really giving me a hard time. Thanks for any help. Greg

I haven't had to pull the rear axles myself so I haven't taken a good look at them, but if they're not bolted to the rear diff, then they probably have a retaining ring on the shaft. It's a metal ring that gets seated in a groove in both the axle shaft, and the differential to keep the axle in place.

Sometimes they don't like to compress when you try to remove the axle. I have found that wiggling the axle and turning a bit, then retrying to pry them out usually does the trick. That being said, a good set of pry bars really help. I have a 4 piece Snap On set that I find myself using for everything.

Thanks for the reply's. I was able to get it off. The rust holding it on was a royal pain in the ass. There are holes in the back of the housing that let you push it out.
The great news is the horrible vibration I was having is completely gone with no rear drive shaft. I am at 189,000 miles so not that surprised it needs work. Not sure how I am going to proceed. Any suggestions?

Have you checked with Colorado DS? They sell refurbished shafts for older AWD Volvo models. In terms of physical inspection, look at the center carrier for tears and spin the carrier by hand, feeling for unevenness/play in the bearing and/or cage. Pivot the CV joints around the shaft at each end (like rolling your wrist joint) to check for stiffness and / or binding. CV's can be replaced.

I'm thinking out loud here, but aren't there carriers (with bearings) holding the driveshaft under the car? Could the bearings be bad?
I vaguely remember from an older car I had, there was balancing weights (kinda like on a wheel) on the driveshaft? Maybe they have fallen off?

I spoke to David at colorado DS last week, had a couple rebuilt, in stock, ready to ship. Price seems great to me. Ill be giving him a shout for one myself in the next few weeks to order. I had the same vibration under my arse as well. Turns out the u-joint is seized up on mine.

I'm having the same problem with my 2005 Volvo S80 what is Colorado DS and do you still know how to get ahold of them I was told all the parts for my car obsolete and I love the car don't want to get rid of it

Just wanted to follow up on this. The replacement drive shaft I ordered from Colorado was shipped the same day I ordered it. After reading some posts about fluid and filter replacement problems I went ahead and replaced the filter and fluid while I had the drive shaft off. The filter looked like crap and so did the fluid. The filter seemed very close to clogged at 189,000 miles.
The replacement drive shaft worked great no vibrations no problems. Happy so far in the short term. I can recommend Colorado as a legit vender and wouldn't hesitate to use them again.
My original worn out drive shaft only vibrated under hard low speed acceleration. Above 45 mph no vibrations.
I drove the car for a week with no drive shaft. It did not feel the same or seem as fast. Still a fun car but glad I spent the time replacing the drive shaft. I was expecting the car to fly in FWD mode without the driveshaft. Not sure what to think

So I have a question, and this may seem like a dumb one, but I'm fairly new to my Volvo. I saw the unit at which the front right, front left, and driveshaft to the rear come out of. Is this the HALDEX unit itself?

Hi, I am trying to remove the propeller shaft for my 2005 T5 Volvo V50 but I'm having trouble with the CV connected to the Haldex. I've seen the holes that Greg speaks of but don't know what tool to use to push the CV through there. I've tried to screw in the same bolts to the back of the CV but they don't seem to fit. It is pretty dirty back there but don't know if the holes are smaller or if it's just the dirt covering the hole.

Find something solid but fairly slim and use it as a punch. I used a long and slim bolt - it was slim enough to angle away from the haldex casing so I could hit it with a hammer.
