Aftermarket stereo?

Has anyone had an aftermarket stereo put in their S40's?

I have the basic audio package in my 2.4i (had no choice in options since I got a smoking deal on the car), but my wife and I both love to listen to music in the car. Our other car has a great surround sound system, which is now only being used to play kids nursery rhyme cd's for my daughter.

I asked at our local dealership about upgrading to the premium system through Volvo, and they said to me that it would be better to go through an aftermarket specialist instead.

I have already used a specialist in our area (strangely enough called The Specialist...go figure!) to add some tweeters to the back doors, and was told by my local Volvo dealer to use them for any aftermarket stuff.

My question is...has anyone gone down this route to upgrade their system?

What were the results?

What equipment was used?

Where was it placed?

Did it interfere with the current display, showing car settings, etc?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Plus, this would allow me to attach my iPod to the stereo, and not have to wait for Volvo to get off their a$$e$ about it.

Thanks

Re: Aftermarket stereo? (Spitfire)

doesnt help but i didnt think this is possible considering the temperature, car settings menu (such as the fan, a/c and what not if you have climate control) and whatever else goes on that display would be gone.

thats just me though but i agree with the ipod statement!

You could simply upgrade the car's main speakers (front and rear) to Alpine, Pioneer, Kenwood, JL etc. and add an amp/sub in the trunk. It's pricey, but Volvo does make a perfect fit for the trunk. That would retain the factory headunit but should give you better sound.
Hope that helped.

Re: (AS40)

It shoud be fairly easy to add an amp and sub, but you'll need to feed the amp off the door speakers (high voltage signal) which is somewhat lower quality than the one coming from preamp.

As of the question from the first post - I saw a picture of an S40 (was posted in eBay) with info display ripped out and aftermarket HU installed in place of it. I would never buy such a car, ever. It means that a good chunk of functionality was simply killed. The fact of the matter is that S40/V50's don't have a separate HU, it's all scattered all over the car, and connected via POST (digital fiberoptic network). It's not a very good idea to mess around with this thing if you don't know what you are doing, and I'm sure the "Specialist" guys have no idea what it is. My advice - leave it, replace the speakers if you want but not the unit itself.

Re: (d_man)

So I agree with you d_man, I too, would never do anything to jeopardise the info display. I was wondering if anyone has done (or knows if it can be done) to add an aftermarket which in no way compromises the info display.

My totally ignorant thinking wishes it were possible to remove/bypass the cd player module and replace that for a head unit that has a slide out display option, that might be able to fit out of the gap already provided for the cd player.

I am sure someone musta thought of this already???

thanks for the insight on the sub.

So there are no amp/sub outlets on the stock radio HU? That's too bad if it's true though like d_man says you can still add them to the rear speakers
