I was merging onto the highway and as I went to shift into 5th, it felt like hitting a wall. 6th also seemed to disappear. I ran in 4th for about a mile before exiting and parking for an hour or so. I started back home figuring I would limp in 4th on the highway. After about 10 minutes of driving I found 6th gear which was a relief. Then, after another 15 minutes or so, I found 5th. Not exactly where I used to find it as "unconscious" shifting led me to that wall again. When I thought about it and played with where I was putting the shifter I found I was able to access 5th gear a little to the left of where I remember it. (This could all be confirmation bias after having owned the car for 14 years).
I called two local transmission shops after parking the first time (thinking I would never have 5th or 6th gear again) and neither even had a "manual" guy on staff and one place said parts or finding a 2nd hand gearbox would be nigh impossible. I know that from reading posts although I found a good post here on Swedespeed from 2022 with supplier sources.
So the good news is I can at least access 5th gear (with conscious thought and gentle maneuvering) and keep driving the car. The bad news is something bad seemed to happen and I am wondering if it is a precursor to something bigger. Any thoughts, recommendations, warnings?
