5th gear trouble ('07 manual)

I was merging onto the highway and as I went to shift into 5th, it felt like hitting a wall. 6th also seemed to disappear. I ran in 4th for about a mile before exiting and parking for an hour or so. I started back home figuring I would limp in 4th on the highway. After about 10 minutes of driving I found 6th gear which was a relief. Then, after another 15 minutes or so, I found 5th. Not exactly where I used to find it as "unconscious" shifting led me to that wall again. When I thought about it and played with where I was putting the shifter I found I was able to access 5th gear a little to the left of where I remember it. (This could all be confirmation bias after having owned the car for 14 years).

I called two local transmission shops after parking the first time (thinking I would never have 5th or 6th gear again) and neither even had a "manual" guy on staff and one place said parts or finding a 2nd hand gearbox would be nigh impossible. I know that from reading posts although I found a good post here on Swedespeed from 2022 with supplier sources.

So the good news is I can at least access 5th gear (with conscious thought and gentle maneuvering) and keep driving the car. The bad news is something bad seemed to happen and I am wondering if it is a precursor to something bigger. Any thoughts, recommendations, warnings?

Check the shifter cables at the transmission end. I'm not familiar with the newer shifter cables but one of them should be adjustable. There are instructions in VIDA.

How are your engine and transmission mounts?

Your bushings in the shifter base in the center console are probably all shot if they haven't been replaced recently which is also potentially contributing to this.

The shifter "tree" within the transmission is available separately but it may be nla.

@TristanScott I think I am 2 for 3. I replaced the transmission torque mount and upper engine mount within the last 2 years/10k miles. Last year (9k miles ago) I replaced many of the center console innards: 9183910 Ball socket; 9183913 Bushing; 9183908 Ball seat; 9183909 Ball socket; 8636988 Clip. They seem to match pretty well with the FCP kit link you provided. Maybe I broke one of those pieces? I can always open that back up. The shifter cable adjustment I have not tried and at the moment is beyond my expertise (plus I have gone this long in V70 ownership life without VIDA - shame on me).

Im literally in my car adjusting the cables now. This is very likely your issue as I couldn’t access 5th or 6th when the reverse lock out was engaged.
