2020 XC90 Middle Row Seat Solution

I just bought a 2020 XC90 T6 Inscription with captains chairs in the second row. I wanted the 40/20/40 but none were available. The middle row chairs are super narrow and there is a large wasted space between them.

I have a large dog that will need to ride in that row but the seats are too small. I would really like the dog to be able to lay down and the best thing I can think of is to find or build some kind of thing to fill up that open spot with a high density foam or something. I am wondering if anyone else has solved this problem or has any ideas.

Thanks!

If you are talking about keeping your dog in the rear area where there is the third row, then there are several ways. I built up a black ABS unit that spanned the entire width of the rear. I attached it to the rear seats. depending on what size your dog is will determine what size pipe. You can also use PVC but probably should go with the 1 inch. I think Volvo may make some steel dividers as well.

I am talking about my dog being able to lay across the middle row seats. As of now, he cannot because of the large gap between Captain chairs. I was thinking if I could fill that gap and make it flush with the seat bottoms, I can put a blanket across the seats and he could walk/lay across as if it were a bench seat.

If I went the seat route, since I have the captain chairs, is there a middle seat that I could buy and would it fit or would I need to buy a whole new 40/20/40 bench seat? I am not clear on what options exist with seating and which would be easy to install. I am trying to assess the cost.

If I went another route other than seat, I was looking at using EVA foam blocks and filling the gap between the seat bottoms so the dog could walk/lay across without falling in.

There are plenty of people who have gone the other direction and removed the middle seat to have captains chairs.

The two side seats are the same. There are just some different bits of trim added to make it look nice.

The question is whether the mounting points on the floor for the middle seat are easily accessible. If so it’s just a matter of finding a middle seat of the appropriate color and bolting it in. Since it’s not for human use the seatbelt and occupancy sensor hookups can be ignored. This generation of xc90 has been around since 2016 and middle seats are readily available from parts yards. I looked into it when I was shopping for cars and having trouble finding one with a center booster.

You could try something like this. It works well when the dog steps forward off the seat. If it was still a problem. a piece of plywood across both seats.

Thanks.

I have been looking around and all I have found so far is the frame of seat bottom for the middle part on eBay. I have never seen the 40/20/40 seat so I didn’t know if you could just add a middle seat in between the captains chairs or if it was a whole new row of seats.

I called the Volvo dealer that I bought it from today and talked to the parts department. A person there told me that I could not use a middle seat or 40/20/40 bench because it would not fit the bolt pattern or what not.

That seems very odd to me because I can’t imagine a different floor assembly line in a manufacturing line but I am new to Volvo so I don’t know. That’s part of the reason I was reading/posting here.

Unfortunately that appears to be for a momentum and mine is an inscription, so the leather does not match.

Do you (or anyone) know if they mounting bolts will match up or easily attach for a middle or even a whole new 40/20/40 seat since I just have the capt chairs? The dealer said it would not but I do not know whether to trust them or not.

The "captains chairs" in the outboard positions of the 2nd row spa xc90 is identical to the "40" and "40" of the 40/20/40 seat, at least when the 6 seat option started being available around 2019 in the US. Afaik, the only "captains chairs" that is different from the "40" is the one for the Excellence trim, where it appears to be identical in geometry and size as the 1st row seats.

The mounting bolts may be inaccessible in your case because the carpet may not have the holes that expose the mounting bolts of the "20" seat. See the two bolt holes at the bottom of this image; those are for 2 on the left edge of the seat. The other 2 are obstructed by the cardboard at the top of the picture. The rear ones are on a slight indentation in the carpet. There is also a hole in the middle where the cable goes (for seatbelt and occupant sensor).

If I were in your situation, and matching a "20" seat doesn't work due to upholstery mismatch (e.g. different texture, color, etc.), I'd consider making / buying one of those accordion benches. They collapse small and when deployed, can fill the gap between the 2 outboard seats. Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/AlienTech-Fu...bench,aps,167&sr=8-10&ufe=app_do:amzn1.fos.f5122f16-c3e8-4386-bf32-63e904010ad0

Inquire here, they might have a center seat section.
