Union City, California

1996 Volvo 850 Turbo Wagon,
Platinum Edition ( aka TLA ),
automatic Turbo, Pearl white with tan interior. Never left San Francisco Bay Area since new.

Mileage:
250k miles , original everything, except fluids, t-belt, water pump, brake pads, starter, wheels, tires, driveshaft, engine and transmission mounts ( consumable stuff ).
Accidents:
One re-spray to fix a scratch @ right rear passenger fender ( circa 2005 ~ 06 ). Painter had difficulty blending Pearl White and so he painted more than he should. Sadly the clear coat began to breakdown circa 2017. See

Rust: None

Mods:
IPD ECU, IPD sway bars, H&R springs lowered - see pics for reference),

Interior:
Very clean, no rips, Leatherique treatment wrapped with plastic bags ( sauna effect ) every summer since early 2000. The Leatherique and plastic bag wrap process rejuvenates the leather keeping soft and pliable. The buyer will be impressed on the condition, except for the drivers seat which could use some leather dye due to side bolster.

Only drivers seat show wear.
I drove it mostly on the highways for work. For the most part it was just me in the car which is evident based on the condition of the passenger seats.

The sale goes with a replacement transmission that I purchased from member who swapped his automatic to stick, extra set TLA of wheels, a bunch of spares for maintenance like hoses, EVAP, filters, stock springs, etc.

I have decided post my wagon for sale to forum members of SwedeSpeed.
If after a few weeks of no sale. I will look into other venues to sell it.

I prefer it sells to a member of this forum.

I will be DONATING $100 to SwedeSpeed as a “Thank You” for hosting an excellent forum to share like minded enthusiasts.

History and reason for sale:
I am the second owner. I “courted” the original owner for a while to coax them to sell it to me circa 2000~2001. Lucky for me he lived down the street from me.

The 850 wagon served me well until my transmission locked-up when I shifted to park at a restaurant. I managed to set-it free from park, but it damaged something in the transmission.

When I drive it there is a metal to metal scrapping sounds. The sound is very similar brakes pads sticking and pads are metal to metal with the rotor.

Since the incident I drive around the city streets to keep things circulating. The wagon shift gears, and goes into reverse.

A note to future owner:

- The 850 runs, but I suggest you bring a trailer ( not the website ), and a battery.
I use my Miata battery when I take it out for its monthly drive to keeps circulating.

- The title is clean with no issues.

- The glovebox I cannot open because of the famous glovebox locking mechanism.

- The sale of the car will come with a Clean California Title. The buyer will sign a release of liability stating the vehicle is being purchased as a parts cars ( similar to other CA vehicle sales when a vehicle is sold in non-running condition.
The vehicle will be sold “as is.” It will be the buyers responsibility to pass smog.
I have documents / receipts that it has been passing emissions until the transmission gave out.

Generally speaking, the seller of a CA vehicle is responsible for providing certification that car passes CA smog in order to transfer title.

There are exceptions such as a vehicle being registered out of state or a county in CA that does not require CA emissions.

- You will need to recharge the a/c. I usually load a tiny can every other year during summer time.

Thank you for viewing my post.

Pls send me message if you have any questions.

@855RI

Thank you for the compliment.
Looks you know your wagons / Tourings / Estates / long roof….

The white is full swap ZHP swap w/ 6spd.
What is not pictured is e46 with an s54 swap w/ a 6spd.

I was quoted $800 to $1,600 to install the a used transmission. I have two spare transmission from forum members. The labor rate was somewhere between 8~16 hrs depending on the shops I contacted local to me. The clear coat is breaking down only at the right rear fender. I was quoted under a $1K for a respray for one panel. I painted five cars back in the day in lacquer enamel. Two of my black paint jobs won awards at the local shows back then. Painting and replacing a transmission is not black magic, but people / shops are charging like it. This 850 Platinum Edition caters to a select few who can appreciate a TLA for what it is. Had this been an 850R there would be many interested buyers. I prefer the TLA for the limited production run over the 850R. This 850 has the IPD tune, sway bars and springs. I had raced a few of my friends 850R. I was right beside them. The most I was left behind was a fenders length. but my next light we would side by side. Granted an 850R looks nicer. I tend to favor sleeper vehicles, like the silver BMW wagon which is a s54 swap, and the white is a ZHP swap both with 6spds.

I would like to think the new owner of my 850 will be a young enthusiast with aptitude to perform the repairs in his / her garage like the good ole days. Beaten down 850 wagons are available all day long on CL, FB, etc for under $900.00. I challenge you to find a TLA in the condition of my TLA that has ZERO rust, all body panels original to the car including windows, an interior that has been treated bi-annually with leatherique for the last 20 years plus. The only seat showing wear is the drivers seat. Let see an 850 with a near pristine interior on the other 850s for sale at under $900. The rubber on windows and windshield have no dry rot due to monthly rubber treatment for the last 20 years. MY mistake is I posted pics of the worst parts of the wagon. I prefer not deceived anyone by showing glamour shots.

Who ever buys this wagon will be glad they did. All it needs is a transmission replaced, which comes with the sale. you can always respray the one quarter panel down the road.
But if it were to drop the transmission. I would replaced every rubber mount I encounter and any serviceable component during the process of transmission replacement.

I will close with this Hagerty video.

As a kid , i resurrected a 356 C from the ground up. The engine, drivetrain , transmission were all mixed together in numerous 20 gallon drums, almost everything was disassembled, I put it back together in the 80's. A time of no internet / forums to guide you. All I had was gumption and manuals from Haynes, Chilton, the seller gave me the factory manuals, but it was in German. Thankfully pictures and specs was not in German. I painted back to the factory color - black. Would I do it again at my age? ABSOLUTELY NOT! I am too old to relive my youth , LoL.

View attachment 213889 @855RI ….just for you. Thanks buddy.
Much appreciated! I miss my 2005 ZHP every day. Someday I would like to make my own version of what you have above. Heck, if I was closer, I’d probably come and look at the Volvo if just to have an interesting conversation about the cars occupying your driveway.

Are both e46 wagons manual / manual swapped?
M54s with ZHP cams/tuning?
Message me if you're seriously contemplating selling them, I'd be interested.
I had a platinum wagon in the past, but do not have time right now for projects.
I would manual swap it if I had the time, and I have a great body guy that can fix/match that area, but it wouldn't be cheap.
