Hi everyone i'm new here on Swede speed and i have a tech question for you all. I work at a small volvo specialty shop and we have an 05 s60 r that needs engine we have an 04 that is available and was wondering if it is compatible?

According to parts interchange with local salvage yard it is different but they have been wrong before with other things that i know would fit/ be diferent etc...

According to volvo parts reference it is to be compatible..

Just wondering if anyone else has dug into these motors to know what the possible differences are. this is a first for me to dig into a motor swap on an R so just thought i would ask?

What i know is the same
-oil level sensor in pan.
-vvt on both cams.

differences??
cams?
crank?
other internal??

thanks alot for any thoughts ideas

It depends whether you're talking US Model Years, or the 'real' years. For example: Volvo built the P2 R from 2003-2006, but they were sold in the U.S. as MY's 2004-2007. So, when you have someone from the UK (or really, anywhere but Stateside) say they have an '03 R, that translates to an '04 R for us. So, yes, you're both right. 05 R's (build year; '06 R by U.S. MY) changed the compressor housing on the K24.

You gotta give to get. I am donating my old a/c compressor to science. Seems Cjones is going to attempt a bearing transplant.
So you see, I will pay it forward.....vulture you say?

Thanks, I assume the same is true of the V70R? So up to 07 you could swap V and R engines from one another with impunity?
Even some of the Xc90 2.5T motors and 05+ S60T5 motors IIRC
I know all the 5 cylinder XC90's from 03 to 06, all the S60 2.5T's, all the S80 2.5T's, as well as some of the Cross Country's share the same engine and it would physically fit but thats a very different engine from the R I think.

Its amazing how many different platforms Volvo used the same engine on. Still think its underpowered for the XC90.

Same sized block, different crank, rods, pistons (compression ratio), head, spark plugs, etc on the non-R 2.5T's. The 05+ P2 T5's were basically 2.4L versions of the "R" motors (shared crank, rods, different pistons obviously - not sure about the head come to think of it...).

Time to update a very old thread.

We pulled the engine apart, did a head job, and right when we were ready to put it back together realized the cylinder walls had some scoring. Enough so that we really didnt want to put that block back in. Other priorities came up and we just didnt have time to finish the project.

Past couple weeks we finaly got back on it and striped the old block down so we could take a better look at it. We compared everything we could between the R block and a 2.5T block off of a parts car and were not able to find any difference. The pistons are not the same but the crank shaft is (same part number). Got all the engine bearings ordered and put the crank bearings in the block without the crank and tightened it down. We wanted to be sure it was right so we took it to a machinist and had him mic the crank as well as the bearing and make sure everything looked good. Turned the crank while he had it as well. He gave us the all clear so we very carefully put it back together.

Finally got it cranked up Thursday and it runs great. Thanks to everyone who replied to this thread, its what got us thinking that maybe we could use a 2.5T block.
Its now for sale, pictures here.
