Did you already checked your rpm sensor? It's on your gearbox and could cause some trouble.
have not checked that yet.

It has been starting pretty well, only one instance of prolonged start / rough idle in the past few weeks. It was right after I put gas in the car.

Update:

Oil leak was looking to be from the Valve cover, but that’s unusual (or so I have been told) so we are going to replace the oil filler cap and gasket and see if that does the trick. Car was also needing a dipstick and the dipstick tube was leaking oil as well. Going to replace stick and tube/gasket.

In other news, looks like both ABS sensors are bad. Well could just be the right front but the left front harness is damaged and corroded. A part that is easy to replace on 99+ cars but no so on the pre-99 ones. Lucky for me, a quick text to ScottishBrick, another to JaredR, and I was able to score a donor harness to splice in. Hoping that once all of that is done, the car will finally be recording miles, speedo will work, and ABS light will go off.

While it was up on the lift, it was noted that the right axle is likely bad, tie rods are bad, sway bar end links are bad, and… well that should be enough for now. Rear shocks are also leaking, so car will need a full suspension refresh.

Sounds like a bad purge valve

Valve cover seam can leak, a lot of p80 cars would do well to have their cam covers resealed by this point.

Yes it is possible, I was more saying that there are other options that I can rule out before doing that

Finally broke down (I’m very impatient) and sent the car into the shop. Got it back late last week. Speedo and odo are finally back to being operational, it’s inspected, and some/all of the oil leak has been addressed.

CEL is still on, I’m thinking that’s related to the purge valve issue as the codes were P0172 and P0444.

Just checked the car, it has part no. 9470775:

When I check online, it says this one is only for 99&00 S70. Can anyone confirm?

I don't know for sure, but it checks out since -98 used a different engine management strategy

FCP was even stumped. Gave me totally different part no. based on the VIN but it still says it doesn’t fit a 98 T5.

Probably not helpful to you, but I had a similar issue 6 months ago. I went the junkyard route. Pulled the purge valves from two other 98s and a third 99...none of them had the same part number as what was on my 98 T5M. So I bought 2 of them taking a shot in the dark. Installed the first one and never had any issues - 6 months later no CEL. I'll check which one it is and post the PN here.

I've mixed and matched purge valves without issues. As far as I can tell the only functional difference is how it attaches to the car.

Thanks for the input everyone. I ordered the part they recommended with my VIN number and we will see if that works.

Installed the purge valve and still had a CEL, with the same codes. I cleared it once more and it seems to have been fine since. I ended up driving the car from my house to the cape, about an hour and half on the highway 1-way, and it was pretty steady the whole way.

That said, it still needs brakes and suspension work before I’d consider doing that again.

Quick photo of the dash back up and running, and the back lights working, which is a simple but satisfying victory.

Could be the angle, but it looks like it's running half a tick hot on the coolant gauge

Could be the angle, could be the car. There is still a lot of work to be done here. It sits at the same temp notch each and every time I am in it no matter how long, so I am not too concerned just yet.
