"We are not excluding the idea of additions, especially in very core segments like the SUV. I think we are looking into this possibility now. You should not exclude the idea that there might be a bigger one, but maybe also a smaller one. We will surprise you about that in the future." ~Håkan Samuelsson

Volvo considering new flagship above XC90, little crossover below XC40

Long-talked-about XC100 could be coming by 2023

By Jonathon Ramsey

"While on the way to selling 373,525 cars globally in 2010, then-Volvo CEO Stefan Jacoby said he believed the brand could double volume to 800,000 units by 2020. Having sold 340,826 Volvos around the world in the first half of 2019, current CEO Hakkan Samuelsson not only sees no need to back down from that prediction, the company is at work on the next steps for expansion. Samuelsson told Auto Express that after filling apparent holes in the carmaker's lineup, "we are not excluding the idea of additions," and that when it comes to crossovers, observers "should not exclude the idea that there might be a bigger one, but maybe also a smaller one."

According to a story in Swedish outlet Teknikens Varld from May, Volvo has been circling the idea of a flagship XC100 ever since the first XC90 launched in 2002. The story says that Volvo knew then that the XC90 was too small compared to the largest competitor offerings, but tight reins on the purse during Ford ownership meant cars were a better use of resources. Geely's takeover in 2010 has opened up the treasure chest. The success of the SPA platform and the models on it has encouraged a return to developing the XC100 on the future SPA2 architecture, the vehicle said to be dubbed internally, "Project V616." The codename breaks down into 6 for the largest cars, 1 for a first-generation model, the second 6 denoting an SUV/crossover. TV says XC100 is slated to arrive in 2022 or 2023, with measurements about five inches longer than the current XC90 on a five-inch longer wheelbase, and sit about an inch taller.

A sub-XC40 entry has been predicted for a while, but no one's homed in on its final form yet. AE suspects it will use technology from parent company Geely, and could be leased only instead of sold. An electric powertrain has been suggested, which would make sense considering vehicles in the class and the fact that an electric XC40 is on the way.

On the subject of where expansion could come, Samuelsson said, "We will surprise you about that in the future." But before the surprises arrive, Volvo will complete its current lineup with a new V40, which is expected to turn into a "pseudo-SUV," as well as expand with that EV XC40 plus an electric XC90."

I'm looking forward to the all-electric XC100, maybe 4 electric motors, one on each wheel, like the Rivian R1S. And a big frunc.

Good, so after they introduce it with all the breath taking promotion, we shall definitely wait 2-3 years before it is usable and without essential bugs :) (see XC90 2015-2016 etc.)

This. If I take my two grandkids somewhere along with my kids still living at home, we don't have any room for luggage once the 3rd row is up. I bought a hitch mounted cargo tray but the problem is that the exhaust pipes are right there, so it's not a great solution.
Exactly......we purchased Volvo roof rails and the largest Yakima roof box, and use all that room.....

How is this extender different from our current T8 setup? If similar, it's not worth it charging the battery. Rather drive the vehicle on fuel and rely on regenerative braking to recharge.

As for me, my next car will definitely be one with a V8 diesel engine.

V8 for power and diesel because of its longish range compared to petrol.

No more electric vehicle for me because it doesn't meet my regular long distance range and consumption efficiency needs. Although I wouldn't mind the current 70L tank XC90 because it'll be a better compromise to my 2016 model as I could at least drive for 600KM before refueling.

I'm obsessed with power & torque and range. Give me these any day at a reasonable price and you'll see me enquiring at your dealership.

Within one 70L fuel tank I manage 1100 km range. My daily driving is around 120 km with one or two charges and calm driving. Of course this way you loose the great torque and power of the petrol engine

I'd like this if only to get the kid to stop kicking the back of my seat. I need more distance between the first and second rows. BUT I will not buy it if its underpowered. How about a I6 or even an I5 again? Don't pull a VW Atlas and underpower your flagship vehicle.

What about only offer it with T8 and default to power mode. :)

So if you cant make it fake it?

472 foot pounds of torque is not fake. 2020 land cruiser makes 401. 2020 escalade makes 460. twin turbo v6 navigator makes 500. bmw x7 makes 330-553. mercedes gls with turbo and hybrid v8 516 torque. yet a bigger xc couldnt make it with just 472? huh. in other trims are closer to 500, if needed a polestar 1 dual motor erad bump that figure around 730 with 2.0l but that probably isnt enough to get the kids to school or to work on time if 472 isnt either

Never seen my T8 do 5sec 0-60 and the S60 T8 got embarrassed recently on Carwow. The times quoted are fake.

That acceleration is slightly exaggerated, but I believe the battery of that S60 was flat when he undertook that drag race.

I'm also unsure if Matt put it in power mode. He also didn't switch off traction control to it in Sports mode, considering how nanny society-ish Volvos are.

But I was also disappointed when I saw ir last week

Excuse for what? Maybe German 3 use V6 twin-turbo as excuse to not make PHEV.
PHEV is better than V6 twin-turbo in many ways.
