Finally had a chance to upload a couple vids I shot during at the races.

First is of my first practice run.

Second is my 3rd win, caught a glimpse of a fellow board members R that was also there as I pulled off the course, and a view of the mitsu that beat me right before I back into a spot.

If you run them side by side, its easy to see how much slower the runs get as the sun and warm temps turn everything on top of the ice into slush.

Surface looks pretty rough. Too bad you didn't have more room to lay into it... course looks fairly tight.

Yeah, as the races wore on all the cars kept sweeping away the loose snow and ice, digging us down to all the ruts and slick ice under the course. The camera makes the bumpy parts look worse than they really were.

Interestingly the course was a good size for the R, but the problem was the outside sweepers got pretty slick so it got harder and harder to steer into the inner gates.

Laying into it also isn't much of an option, the traction is so marginal that over spinning just makes the slides worse. For some of the tight turns I had to get down to idle speed in first and creep around the really slippery stuff as slow as I could.

The fun run course you can go to once you get knocked out of the official races was almost all glassy and slick ice. There were lots of times we all went spinning off on that stuff once the sun wetted the ice surface. All you could do was spin around helpless in ice mode while the car kept rotating off the course where there was nothing you could stick to with bare rubber.

Why did you sand your oil cartridge sealing surface on the oil pan? Seems unnecessary, given that it's a polished surface from the factory.

Ice racing looks like a blast. I'd like to give it a shot in the v70R some time.

Not the cartridge, the bore in the pan the ring seals against.

It had to be either the cartridge groove or the bore since its happened for multiple o-rings, so I attended to both while I was in there to remove all messy possibilities.

It's probably not that and you just had a real tiny crack in the plastic cartridge.

I didn't say you sanded the cartridge....I said the sealing surface on the pan. But yeah I would have left that alone since it was just the plastic cups. They go bad all the time from cheapo oil change facilities using filters that don't fit. That's why I have a box of them lol.

Looks like it was pretty sweet! They had me on short call out notice or ida seen ya there! Ill have to try the lighter oil. Guess thattl only help in the cold (hope it doesnt need it, love this Colorado mild winter!)

It might be, Georgetown Lake is about half way between Denver and Vail.

And very fun indeed. My friend and I must have gotten dozens of fun runs in on the test track after we got knocked out of competition around noon and kept lining up till around 3.

Well, now that I'm creeping up on 40K miles on the rebuild all is still running well, but there is a new mystery issue to report.

One thing that has surprised me since the rebuild is how quiet my rebuilt turbo has been from the get go, so quiet it was quite surprising at first before I got used to it.

I'm normally used to hearing a little turbo whine in all of my past turbo cars including the R for most of the time I've had it, but recently after a hard jaunt on a really cold day I can now finally a little spool noise from the cabin once she starts making more than 5 lbs of boost.

Doesn't appear to be effecting performance at all, since I'm still making all my usual boost and power levels.

So it has me wondering, what's changed? Could it be the typical crack has developed in the exhaust housing, and is now creating a little whistle on the exhaust side since the intake side doesn't appear to be emanating any noise?

Perhaps a small exhaust leak, either at the turbo flange or the flex coupling has sprouted a crack on my cheap, non-stainless OBD downpipe?

Or perhaps a little blade tip damage on the exhaust turbine?

Or worse case scenario, perhaps there is a problem with the bearings, though at this point that is lowest on my list of possible causes since the turbo still appears to be performing as before and oil pressure values are also normal across the board too.

Either way, curiosity kills, so when I have some time I'm planning on sending my snake camera in through the intake pipe and O2 sensor bung, to take a look around since a change to my turbo wheels is at the top of the suspect list.

Planning on being a bit proactive about this since it was a dying turbo which sent crap down into my oil pan that killed off my stock motor and I have no plans to let the same thing happen to this one.

Will also be doing the old hose in the ear trick to probe around the flange, flex joint and other exhaust gaskets to verify I haven't sprung any new leaks underneath the caR.

Did you clean your ears for the first time in a while? 🙃

Gremlins, definitely gremlins.

You drive and R after all...

Stealthy I have been reading this read and it has me pumped about my current project! Amazing and fastidious work there back in 2015 with how clean the rebuild was, Big ups!

Thanks man, the work I've put into this thing has been paying dividends on the road and the track. That's what all the blood, sweat and tears you put into these things is all about.

Do you have a stock intake? Could be the corrugated portion...
Nope, I have the snabb intake pipe, and I've verified that everything is all properly seated and tight.

First step will be looking for a new small exhaust leak, and if that doesn't find anything the next step will fishing my camera around in the turbo housings.

Some extra grease in the front-center CV appears to have made my center axle noise go away, couldn't find any exhaust leaks though so a turbine inspection with the snake cam still lies on the horizon though. From an observers perspective, I'm sure the turbo noise sounds a lot cooler than its previous silent boosting ability does, lol.

Murphy's law prevails though. On the way home tonight the right headlight started strobing for a few seconds, so it appears its about time to change out the HID bulb like I did the left one a few years ago.
