Autonomous driving is coming whether you think it's a good idea or not. It won't come all at once and it won't come without some mistakes. But in the end it will make driving safer, cheaper and more enjoyable. As you said, it's a slipper slope, but one I'm ready to slide into.
+1

Sorry you feel like that. I will not chill out with the fact that we are not keeping the eye on the ball regarding having so much control from the car.

My experience is an eye opener and not just a matter to vent about.

Not long ago I was also looking on the hope of Volvo upgrading the MY2016 with the option to go past 30MPH.

I feel now that the light must be open and self driving or any drivers help is just a gimmick to turn away from the fact that a driver must drive and not to be driven.

You really think that keeping your hand on the wheel mean anything else than a gentle shake every 15 sec???

The theory and the reality of adding these drivers aid are clashing now. Attention lacking drivers today will soon become no drivers attention required. Its a downward spiral and I see only the end user who will stop this... meaning the drivers to take back the control.
Have you flown on a commercial flight in recent memory? Do you think the pilot and co-pilot are actually flying the plane for the bulk of time it's in the air?

This thread seems to have moved a bit off topic. I think the most pressing issue here is the silence from Volvo overall. This whole thing has become one big joke and I for one am done expecting this as either a free or paid upgrade. I love my car and have zero expectations going forward for this allusive feature which should have been confirmed or denied over 6 months ago.

Driving without driver attention is something that will sure need to be tested many many times.
Personally I don't feel to be the beta tester here.

The pilot doesn't turn on the autopilot when u enter a dense airplane area.

Cars are always driving along side other cars, motorbikes, peoples,....

The most dangerous moment in a plane are takeoff and landing because there's actually some pilot decision to be made. The autopilot will never take over the life of the pilot and its passengers.

Best thing you can do...

Volvo doesn't owe any MY16 owners anything, if it comes and when they feel ready to announce anything, we'll be surprised and either happy or sad.
But it doesn't take away from the car being a real joy to own.

Noted. Your are now on Volvo's do not disturb list when they make a decision. lol

Largely concur--they don't owe much in the way of updates. They definitely owe Android Auto since it was promised as an available update. :)
If they want to keep longtime customers in the fold, they should continue to improve Sensus software performance.

Maybe. There's no real legacy of automakers updating software on previous years' vehicles. Still a new thing - so it still it to be seen if consumers demand that or not.

The more I think about it, the more I'd rather Sensus be really simple so that it stays out of the way of CarPlay, Android Auto, etc.

The iPad, which Volvo pulled many cues from, has updates that occasionally include new features. When dealing with this new technological generation, we do expect our equipment to keep up for a few years at least. When a person buys something this advanced they shouldn't be left high and dry after a year. The first year is crucial for new products in these competitive markets, to leave the early adopters, that had a hand in making the new XC90 the sales success that it is, without enhancements like PA2 large animal detection without even trying, would be a mistake. Please note that I'm speaking about those items that are software updates and not necessarily updating hardware items. If it's hardware, let us know. We should be given the opportunity to purchase the necessary hardware for the update.

You almost lose me when you compared a car to an iPad, but I persisted. =)

I'll just repeat myself and leave it at that - there's basically no historical precedence for automakers to update systems on previous years' vehicles, especially that add new features or upgraded features.
So if Volvo does upgrade PA1 to PA2, that's new ground, so I wouldn't expect it. I hope for it, but I'd rather be surprised that feel that an automaker has some duty to take care of me.

New features sell new cars. It's pure incentive for automakers to sell you a new car, rather than work backwards.

1- They did add large animal detection with the May update. So that precedence is now there.
2- They did market software upgrades
3- I see your point, but it's in the best interest of their dealers to upgrade and future business. The 2016 will be the least desirable model and that would effect trade ins and the dealers ability to move the car.

I can assure you that an upgraded Pilot Assist will have virtually a nil effect on trade in value. The main difference I. Trade in value will be the model year difference, mileage and condition.

This thread has gone a bit OT. I'm as guilty as anyone, but in this case, I'm not talking about updating in terms of new features. Rather bug fixes, stability and speed performance. No one can reasonably argue that the Sensus software was ready for primetime upon launch. It has improved, but still has a ways to go. If consumers don't expect that, they're chumps.

There is a 2016 T8 Bursting Blue R-Design at local dealer and I am so attempted to contact them...
Last straw is still no news for this PAII upgrading...

Guess Volvo has sold out all 2016 models and don't want this news to boost 2016 sales.
