Good question, I've contemplated in moving it or even closing it, but this keeps those other 2012 S60 R-Design or 2012 S60 T6 threads and posts at bay...
Dude....lay off the "thread close" button... we live in a fee world :) (is Canada free too? hhmm...i guess so..hehe)

I haven't seen this many closed threads since my old s40concepts.net forum came crashing down after "new management" took over

How can I say it without going technical? The overall feel and what we experience. Without the cotton surrounding it, or a candy cover.
I understand your description. I've never understood the whole R=Refined. The car is not refined. The harshness of the 4c makes sure of that.
I just thought it was funny that you paired two opposite words together to describe the car:D

You know, it took a bit to choose those 2 words when I wrote the first post...

Well, there's certain things where you would describe some parts of the car and others with the other word. Refined in a sense of the brakes, the interior, the leather, power (this can also be raw if you wish) etc. Raw when it comes to the suspension where it was new(at the time) and jawing, raw when it comes to the intercooler design, headlight design, EBD etc. IT also depends on how you define the word raw, or refined, which can be good and bad.

Might sound like a metaphor or even irony, but personally I think that's what the R really is; a contradiction of all sorts or an equilibrium depending on how you look at it. For example; Volvo > Sports Car , Safe > Fast , Attractive > Conservative , Performance car > Family car, Advanced > Comfort. etc and the list goes on. I think it's that equilibrium that captivated most of us.

As for the R-Design, it's really more on the comfort / mainstream non-enthusiast level of sports sedan, if you know what I mean. I'm not saying the P2 R is a pure sports car, which it's not, but it's closer along that spectrum than what the R-Design is.

I'll soon have this in the family, so I'll have a first hand experience in driving it for longer more realistic periods. Delivers late May, a MY2012 Ice White R-Design with Polestar tune.

I think you mean that the car has....character. With all it's failings and shortcomings it still brings a smile to my face every time I punch that throttle, someone gawks over it (the lines of the car are timeless) or it starts to rattle because the upper strut mount goes. To be honest, given the choices out there now, only an 'M', 'S' (just barely) or an 'AMG' (on the fence because of the transmission) car interests me at this point. I'm keeping my 'R' until it wont go anymore. My 14 year old son already is calling dibs, telling me to take care of his car for him until he's 17.

That's because they are using advanced AT gearboxes, which change gears in milliseconds. They made it for speed.

Until Volvo starts using dual clutch transmissions, there is no justification for not making a MT car.
Last time I checked, the GT was faster than the MT without the torque limit at the quarter mile. So despite MT being the the favorite on this forum, and GT being constantly called "GirlTronic", it's not slow whatsoever. MT's might be a bit faster at the line, but the GT simply shifts faster than any fast shifting MT driver. So it's not about dual clutch or whether Volvo has the most advanced AT gearboxes or not.

But on a track, or just taking a corner the MT will respond better than trying to skip gear with the lame A$$ GT. I say that as I got it in my XC90 and I hate it!!!!

Maybe with shifting normally, but I think powershifting with an experienced driver would result in the MT being faster.

Well, that's another story. Volvo transmissions and their TCUs aren't exactly the best in the market. I'm purely talking about straightline performance, but yeah. I agree with you. However, I'm just saying that the manual transmission is a dying breed that will slowly diminish through time and through all makes unfortunately.
