There is an AC drain recall that can cause some water leaks / damage inside the vehicle. Not the same thing, but sharing info.
Looks like the wet passenger side issue for my car is DEFINITELY NOT from the AC drain recall. Last Friday when driving 2 hours while it was raining, my wife said, "my footwell is wet again". The wetness was coming from the the TOP shelf area of the floor mats. When I got down there with a flashlight, it looked like it was coming from behind the glovebox area. Dealer says it could be the sunroof drain. I will need to setup another appointment for this. Note that the car could be sitting still in a torrential downpour and not have the issue. It appears that for my car, it happens while it's raining and driving.

As the OP of this thread, I can report that after 20k miles I have had no further leaks. I did have the sunroof drain fix applied... my car has been bone dry since.

Well, after 15 months of ownership, I thought I was lucky enough to have escaped the water leak issue. Then today, during moderate rain on level ground, water started pouring in from around the intellisafe mirror area. Hopefully the dealer is competent enough to fix the root cause, but happens a second time, I am done with Volvo.

Bottom line, if you have a 2016 XC90 that hasn't leaked yet, you're not out of the woods.

Dang......sounds like the ghost of Christmas past has come to life again! :(

Sunroof Seal Leaking at 25k miles

This is my first post on a forum.

First off, I'd like to say thank you to all the active members here. It's been a great resource. I took delivery of a MY16 XC90 in Dec 2015 and have put 25k miles on it (50 mile/ day commute). After heavy rains last week, water came in through the intellisafe module behind rear-view, pooled in rear driver side door jamb (not in cabin), and standing puddle in rear, passenger side plastic well tray in cargo area. Already had a service appt for software update and "luckily" water was still dripping when I got to dealer.

Long story short, they had seen it before and diagnosed a poor install on the sunroof seal fairly quickly. Have dropped headliner to replace all seals and any water damage. Receiving new headliner and any other damaged parts, all under warranty.

Great service from North Point Volvo in Alpharetta GA. I've been in a loaner and no real inconveniences. However, if this had come up after warranty expiration, the tune would be different.

Anyway, thanks again for the great community. I appreciate all the info and activity.

Yay! My sunroof is leaking again after having been "fixed" by the dealer following the initial leak in August 2017. Rain water again pouring down from the Intellisafe housing onto the sensus screen. Called the dealer immediately only to find that their first available service appointment is two weeks out. Looks like a visit to the Audi dealship to test drive a Q7 is in my future.

Funny. I've heard that same statement from 2 other people about jumping ship from Volvo to an Audi Q7.

Are there no other dealers in the area that might be more proficient at fixing problems?

Wow you guys have bad luck with these leaks. Never had a leaking problem yet in our XC90 have it for 1 1/2 years already.

But did have a moon roof leaking issue in our new F150 2 years ago and was fixed once and never came back so I know how annoying it can be. Turned out it was a kinked drain hose so leaks can happen in any car I guess.

Head the leak from the rear view mirror after a car wash, but it was promptly fixed at the dealership under warranty. However, once every few weeks the display settings change on the instrument cluster to the factory setting so our "Chrome Rings" theme isn't used by default and I want to say the units are in metric instead of US units. Definitely our default trip information of instantaneous fuel economy and miles until empty are not present so we have to switch back to that. Also, when locking the door sometimes we get the acoustic lock beeps and sometimes we don't.

Overall it's minor, but it started after the water leak. The dealership could have upgraded software that caused these issues so it's a coincidence but it's possible water got to other places it shouldn't have and is breaking things. Anyone else seeing these issues after a water leak?

I had the water leak from behind the rear view mirror issue a few times. Dealer did the TJ "fix" a few weeks ago. It has not rained hard since then, so can't say it is fixed.

From a curiosity standpoint, what is it about the Q7 that Volvo owners want to jump to it? It's a nice SUV, no doubt. With so many choices out here, just curious why that is the "go to" choice after getting tired of dealing with Volvo.

For me it came down to...
X5 and ML are dated.
Range Rover Sport felt cheap inside. RR Classic is too expensive.
Cayenne... same. Too expensive, once you have added all bells and whistles.
F-Pace... too small.

Frankly, I am not in love with ANY cars in this segment. The XC90 and, now, Q7, always felt like the best out of a bunch of non-exciting choices. The Q7, frankly, is ugly as sin, but I am still going for it.

I agree. The other competitors prices get out of hand when you start adding options. I will give it to Volvo, they have a lot of standard things the others want to nickel and dime you for and their interior is one of the best. The BMW X7 coming out next year will be another 7 seater option.

2017 XC90 Momentum leaking in battery compartment

Hi guys,

We've owned an XC60 for about 4 years now and we've been super happy with it. Recently, we splurged and got a 2017 XC90 T6 momentum. The car is beautiful, CPO and previous owner took great care of it.

Had no problem for 2 weeks and then we moved. The new place has a drive way with a slight reasonable slope on it. First summer florida storm and next morning car smelt weird. I couldn't figure it out and drive it throughout the day. Only when I got groceries did I realize that my driver rear side was soaked. I dug into it and found about 1 to 1.5 inch of water in the battery compartment. Not happy at all at this point. On top of it, while I was looking into it and trying to figure out how to drain it and dry it, the trunk must have malfunctioned and started to close on me.

Anyway, took it to Volvo. They stated I was lucky that my seats weren't wet or anything (I was like, excuse me? This is a $70k car and I'm luck to have a leak in the trunk??). Told me it would take a day, they'd replace some seals and it would be fixed. Picked it up Thursday, was guaranteed that everything was good and wasn't leaking, and Friday, summer shower, car is wet again. I'm super mad. They've told me to bring it back tomorrow. They don't want to provide a loaner as I didn't buy the car at this specific dealer, which makes me very frustrated as they couldn't verify that their fix was successful before returning the car. My biggest questions at this point for which I could use your help, and hopefully before I drop it off tomorrow:
1. Is there anything I should be concerned about regarding how the parts in the trunk will be after these leaks and being soaked (electrical, clothe, glue for headliners and such)?
2. I'm concerned about the fact that the trunk closed on me and see that as a potential safety issue. Not so much for me but for the kids. Anything I should ask?
3. The dealer told me to bring back the car as the warranty expires in 2k miles, even through it's only 18 months old and CPO. He said CPO does not cover water leak - is that true? Even when there's a someone known issue?

thank you all! I hope we can get this fixed. We love the car so far but this experience has turned me off a bit...

Have a great evening,

Sorry for upside down pic. Can't figure out how to rotate it on imgur!

Hey guys, wanted to follow up. They ended up replacing some seals around the moonroof, as well as replacing the drain pipe, which appeared to be pinched. They would not get too much into the details, which bothered me, returned the car with some issues (headliner no tucked back in) and I don't think I'll continue doing my service there... At least the car appears to be dry now, so there's that!

On a side note, I am very disappointing at Volvo, for clearly knowing of such problems, and not addressing it proactively. Which soaked everything i had in the trunk not once, but twice... Is it worth complaining to someone about it?

thank you all!
