XC90 T8 with 60k miles repair and expectation

Hi all! I currently own a V90 T5 2018 with 48k miles on it. I love it, but I need more headspace and the third row seat from the XC90. There is a XC90 2018 T8 with 60k miles on it available at the Volvo dealer near my place. It has been maintained at Volvo his whole life so we can see the maintenance history. I tend to prefer not having over 60k miles on my car before changing it, but I wonder if I get the XC90 T8, what can I expect on maintenance over 60k miles?

  • I see from previous post that 4C suspension could need to be replaced at 60k miles?
  • I see that there is also the ERAD that fails quite often?
  • I see the AC compressor also tend to fail above 60k?

First, if the car is CPO, I assume it's all under warranty, but the more I read the more I feel it's not a good idea to consider that option. I wanted to ask you all, in case what I'm reading are some exceptions here and there!

From my understanding is that the ERAD was problem in earlier years, they updated it and it still had issues on some cars but the failure rate went down substantially but still had problems. Then Volvo released a software update sometime in 2021 and that cured a lot of the remaining problems. The AC and 4C though I think your fine. My car has 4C and it's great when loading because it will compensate for heavy weight in the back. That part is very reliable.

If you don't want to take that risk I get it too. You may want to go with the T6. However it's not going to have the power and your fuel economy will take a hit. Idk I think for a wagon I like the T6 because it's lighter and idk I like how it handles without the added weight. But for a SUV that's not as big of a deal I don't think so you may want to go T8. It just depends on what you are looking for. I didn't really know enough about the T8 at the time and I plan to keep my car for 1 million miles if I can like people in Albania do with Mercedes-Benz, so I went with the T6. I can see both sides though.

But if I asked one of the people I know right who are from Albania, Palestine or Germany etc (places where they go for huge mileages and cost to repair is important) I think they would tell me to go with the T6 probably but those guys are very conservative people too and they think about the long term cost. And people say that's crazy but look how many miles they are putting on their cars. With the updates though I think it might be fixed. I have heard it's better now! The decision is up to you. I think Volvo has a pretty good reputation for reliability so that might convince me to take the chance and go with the T8. Mercedes-Benz are technologically advanced vehicles too and look how reliable they are. This can be hard to predict though.

I know I didn't say that I said Mercedes-Benz. Much of the Middle East uses them (Toyota too). However some of the same principals they use to keep their cars on the road and their philosophies we can also learn from too and use on other cars. I have known a good amount of people from much of the Middle East and I can tell you they know how to push miles and they are very resourceful people. They are great guys! If you just listen and let them talk for a minute they will tell you a lot on how to push miles.

The ERAD would be fine on a 2018.

A/C units are probably one of the things that fail most often later on in life, so good if you're buying it as a CPO unit. I may even consider extending the warranty further. Except for the rubber hoses related to A/C, it's covered by extended warranty.

Air suspension is most prone to fail in winter conditions where it's damp. The main reason for air suspension failure in any car that has it is condensation getting into the line, which makes the compressor run itself to death. Road hazard that punctures the air bag can also be an issue. But it's not related to mileage.

That is all I personally would consider, and get a CPO extension (you can cancel it later for refund if you get rid of the car while under original CPO)
And I have zero (well, near zero) concern about anything failing. If/when it does, let them fix it. I have another car, and we both WFH, so I'll be fine. BUT if I required that car every day, I might feel differently, but I doubt it. I haven't been stranded in a car for something that I didn't cause, ever. And I've owned and driven beaters to new cars since the 1980s.

CPO = 5 years / unlimited miles from in service date. Chances are the 2018 MAY be approaching the end of its CPO. You'd need to find out when the vehicle was first registered then add 5 years to that date. For about $3-4k, you can extend out the CPO another 5 years / unlimited miles, if that price is worth the extra piece of mind. Then, any failures would be covered that don't constitute normal wear and tear.

Yep, I was very fortunate to find my car, perfectly spec'd for me including colors (would have preferred blue though) and in service was 12-23-2019 for a 2019 car! But oddly enough, my Volvo On Call ends October 2024, not December. I guess the dealership activated it before sale?
