XC90 T8 2023 recharge Ultimate Pearl White step by step review

After 3 previous XC90 D5, I decided to go for a hybrid T8. Most of my drives are short distance around, so pure electric engine seemed tempting. Plus some change, of course.

I was actually considering even other cars, I went to look at Range Rover, Mercedes and Audi SUVs but in the end none of the had such a big cargo space etc.

I will keep continuing the sharing.

Now the first impressions:

1) it is definitely more quiet than D5 - I love the feeling when starting the car and there is no sound :)

2) The drive is quite smooth. I have yet to charge it fully to enjoy longer pure electric drive

3) Although it has air suspension, even small holes on the road are still felt quite hard, pity that Volvo did not make some step closer to Audi or Rang Rover ...

4) Google maps are interesting, let us see if overall better than the previous Volvo navigation

5) those remaining ranges (petrol and battery) seem to be rather flowing fairy tales ... 20 km remaining on batter and in 500 m 15 km, 1200 km remaining on petrol but in 3 km 800 km etc :)

You made a good choice. I ended up selling my 2017 XC90 T8 fully loaded and we got a Tesla Model X. I had planned on the XC90 Extended range but at the time they did not offer the Google system. It was still Sensus. Not that I had problems with Sensus but I wanted to get the most current. As for the driving aspect you can make some adjustments to the dynamics that will improve the ride quality. The Range Rover looks nice but when I priced with what I wanted it was about $140k. And while it got decent around town electric only the car does not do well in just hybrid mode. Where as the XC90 should return you around 27 mpg. The Volvo is a great car. We just wanted to go all electric and were tired of waiting for the new XC90 Electric.

Gotcha…reason I mentioned checking tire pressure is I’ve had ours come out of dealer service with tires inflated to max on sidewall (can’t recall…either 44 or 51psi) instead of the correct 38psi. With iTPMS it only measures if tires are equal pressure not correct pressure

beautiful car…wish ours was white but could only find silver with the options we wanted

There is one strange thing - after charging is finished, I disconnect the cable and start the car, there is HUGE ventilator noise starting coming from the engine ...

Also - seems you cannot charge the car when the doors are not locked ?

Yes, it is battery cooling fan but it is quite massive (louder than normal engine itself)
And when charging, there is quite a loud whistling sound coming from inside? Plus some mechanical occasional noises.

Today I went 200 km on highway. Well, I think I will again go for some sound insulation, the sound and noise from the suspension and wheels is still quite loud. I really don't understand why Volvo, presenting these as luxury SUVs, is not able or willing to do a decent sound insulation like Audi, Range Rover etc. where the noise inside the cabin is almost none.

While driving slowly, the sound is quite decent though.

The Google navigation has quite unpleasant woman voice, but there does not seem to be an option to change it?

Not sure on the Google (but my guess is "yes"), but it has to be seriously better than that horrible robotic Sensus Map voice.

I just discovered a bit unpleasant thing regarding the cargo space.

In the beginning I could not believe that I cannot order T8 with 5 seats and it is possible only with 7 seats that sounded absurd to me - not everybody carries kindergarten with him etc. I absolutely don't need and will never use the third seats row but I was told it it not possible to have less seats for T8 (unlike D5). But I was assured that after folding the third seats row, the cargo space will remain exactly the same. I thought it makes no sense but OK what to do, will have 7 seats.

Unfortunately it is not true (after folding all the seats). There are some hand supports, places for water, airbags etc. for the third row that limit and obstruct the cargo space on the sides. I selected XC90 mainly because of the cargo space but now I see that I have it a kind of limited comparing to the previous D5 and I am a bit upset about it. It is beyond my understanding why one cannot select the number of seats he needs in this case.

So first 500km done ...

Here few further impressions and questions

1) when going slowly in the city etc. "pure" driving mode is great and pleasant

2) when charging, there is quite some whistling noise and occasional strong fan kicking - is it normal? Plus the white light of the charging cable is flashing continuously - any way to switch the light off?

3) when starting the car, there is always a kind of "hurricane" coming from the engine (even in pure mode) plus some"siren" sound. Not really quite "pure" sound.

4) the showed battery range in km is a kind of fairy tale (similarly like declared battery life in Macbook etc: )). It starts by 64 km, I go slowly and in 2 km it is suddenly 58, I stop for 2 minutes, start again and it is now 48 etc ... so not very realistic

Is it possible to set to "Pure" as the default mode in start-up? I recall seeing an 2022 XC60 Recharge review with the AAOS and there is a toggle to allow that.
For the charging noise - it's quite normal, especially in hot summer days. The Telsa (model Y & model S) that parents have also have that noise when charging. Just not sure how significant it is to you - do you charge it inside the garage or in open space?
Also, please share more about your experience in the AAOS in terms of connectivity (for GPS mainly) & if other issues if any. Saw some demo videos that the 4G connection looks to be spotty, probably related to the location & carrier though.

I've just ordered a MT23 XC90 ultimate bright, with thunder grey exterior & blonde interior. Quite excited for the delivery (Jan 2023 estimate).

I rented a 2022 recharge before the bigger battery pack and bigger electric motor and I found it was kind of jerky when accelerating in hybrid mode. In pure mode it was not but also was very slow with the old motor. How is it in hybrid mode? How's the performance now in pure mode? Will a hill on the highway cause you to lose speed in pure?

I find pure mode quite sufficient and powerful for normal use. Accelerating in hybrid mode brings some engine roarings at times but seems ok. Have not tried to go up the hill in pure mode yet :)

OMG - it is really not anywhere! (individual driver profile with options - I went through all the submenus). Is it possible that Volvo removed it im 2023 model ?? Can't believe it
what country are you in? Europe may not have this feature because of regulations.

Hmm, it is rather sad that with todays super crazy electricity prices, it does not come much cheaper to run on electricity than on petrol. Last year it was much cheaper. So the only advantage is that in pure mode it is more silent.

Now the question is - which mode is the most economical and "fuel" money saving? Pure or hybrid ? In hybrid - pure mode is on when going slower, petrol comes to support and the battery is being recharged a bit. In pure mode there is only electricity but no battery recharging ?

This is all from me on my 2019, I know 2020 changed a little bit, and more so in 2022?
Pure IS Hybrid just more aggressive, but it also reduces HVAC power draws. Depending on the year, it is easier to stay on EV without accidentally hitting the accelerator too much and kicking on the ICE, but other than that, I don't think anything powertrain actually works differently. ON my 2019, Pure give me more "resolution" to the pedal, making it easier for me to see how much draw I am commanding.

Tnx for your post! Having a T5 myself, I´m looking in the same direction as you. The only thing that I dont like about my volvo is the sound isolation, do you experience any improvements? Mine is a 2018.

It is really a bit weird that even in late 2022 models (as also seen in the manual) you can easily create full individual profiles including default driving mode etc. and in 2023 model it is not possible (just very limited individual mode). Also up till 2022 you could easily choose from various designs of the front panel but in 2023 model there is nothing, Before, the time was shown on the front panel (next to the temperature - that was comfortable to see), now there is no time there a by default it was shifted to the right display and there is no possibility to change or adjust anything. I am not sure if I would call this an "upgrade" ?

I have a question about the hybrid mode (that is default and it can't be changed). Isn't it in reality that when driving normally, the hybrid mode is actually100% pure (electric) too and only when more intensive impulse comes the petrol engine is involved for a moment ?

That has been my experience. Unless you hit the gas hard or demands extra power, say in a hard climb when accelerating.

Either that or when the battery runs out. Then, it switches automatically to Hybrid Driving Mode and starts running on gas.
