XC90 MY2017 First Impressions and PAII

I just took delivery of my 2017 XC90 from Volvo of Southborough in Southborough, MA. Had a great experience there. I live in Pittsburgh, so my first time with the car was driving it about 500 miles back home. Was mostly highway and interstate driving, and I used PAII almost 75% of the time. Since there seem to be a lot of questions on how it works, wanted to share my impressions, along with other observations on the car.

It definitely requires the driver to keep a decent level of awareness. You have to be gripping the steering wheel, and also it sometimes cuts off. With moderately visible lanes, it works well but some construction markers throw it off. For most of the time though, it would maintain for long stretches, though sometimes I did not agree with its turn approach strategy and would override. A few times, it seemed that PAII and the LKA would trip each other up, or maybe it was just my override at the last minute that led to the LKA vibration. It responds well when changing lanes, loosening it's grip at turn signal activation and resuming with about 5-10 seconds of changing lanes. It definitely helped prevent fatigue during my almost 10 hour drive today.

Besides PAII, I really like the XC90. No defects I've noticed and haven't had any real problems with Sensus. Other than PAII and a second USB, I'm not aware of any new features on the 2017. I did have the Polestar optimization done, and the engine feels strong and responsive.

There are quite some - like new suspension, new B&W amplifier and for D5 model (that is most common in Europe) - completely new engine, power pulse etc.

Mine coming in a few days ;)

According to the technical journal released on 17 June, since week 22, there should be new struts used for the air suspension - all 4 (new parts and new part numbers)

D5 engine 2017 has 235 HP, while D5 2016 has 225 HP, so it is not exactly the same. According to some new users (who had MY 2016 before), the new engine sounds softer. I can directly compare in one week ...

About the new B&W amplifier - I heard it was mentioned in a technical journal few months ago ... I can also directly compare the sound in one week.

That's the fix for the crackling noise upfront. The part number for 2016 as I understand has been replaced with this one. Eventually, I think, all 2016 will have their struts replaced with these new parts.

Not quite. It does not automate lane shifts either, it reacts to the turn signal by deactivating the lane keeping part until you switch. MB's new system in the E-class goes a step further, although it hasn't received the best reviews. And Tesla's system is not exactly getting positive press this week. Unlike Tesla's Volvo decidedly does not give the user the impression that it is completely in control, which is probably the safest until the tech catches up.

I read that to, the real TPM sensors are gone and now TPM is virtual, deduced from the wheel rotation info.
I don't know what system will detect a flat tyre first, but as you write, it's not possible anymore to read the
tyre pressure. But since the sensors are gone, they don't have to be replaced anymore when their batteries
have run down (at least this is what happens on my BMW motorcycle).
I would prefer a combination of both systems.

Can you describe this a bit more. I don't understand the theory here. If you were overriding it because you felt the car was drifting toward the outside lane marker, wouldn't you have been steering away from the lane marker and avoiding the LKA from kicking in?

What I meant is I could have possible been gripping too hard. What happens is the car is in PA2 but still starts to cross the line and LKA vibrates. Only happened 2-3 times over 400 miles of use.

On MY17 is CarPlay standard or do you still need to pay for it?

Optional with Momentum/Momentum Plus, standard with Inscription/R-design. Of course, standard on all T8s since the two trim levels (for MY17) are either Inscription or R-design.

The hand over usually takes 2 hours. it took about 5 minutes, he didn't want to get schooled for 2 hours so there was no point. I'd spent the last 5 months on here and the UK volvo forums and I've learned about 95% of what I know about the car just from reading peoples posts, manuals, order forms and all sorts :)

I usually let them talk to see how much BS they say. Helps me judge their character before starting any negotiations. If its to much BS I correct them and leave.

The integrated sun curtains are the sun blinds that are included with the Inscription. The Power Child Locks on the rear doors are standard equipment. The integrated booster cushion is a stand-alone option and the load protection net is available as an accessory.

"I thought I was the only one that replayed the same youtube videos a million times. I search for new videos almost daily. Lol. I've noticed the same though. Audi and Volvo salesman need better training."

This is one of the most detailed I've seen yet, on a T6, and it covers the 2017 MY:

I would guess as these things develop going forward, and they will, there will be more demand on better quality roads to allow the technology to work consistently. It will be interesting how this will be embraced in the UK as our road quality is getting worse currently. I can see roads having to achieve a certain standard and be labelled with things like "approved for automated driving".
