XC60 fuel gauge accuracy

Anyone have their fuel gauge read incorrectly upon startup? Recently this has happened to ours twice. The one time I actually got angry at my wife because I thought she left the tank dry when the fuel gauge had 0 life on it and the miles remaining was "---". I ended up emptying my 5 gallon gas can into it, but as I drove, it went up to 1/2 tank. Egg on my face.
Then it happened again last week when she was driving. Shows empty on startup, but increases as you drive.

What gives?

I haven't experienced this with our XC60 but I have with other vehicles. It's usually an issue with either voltage or the fuel gauge sending unit.

I had a vehicle that when you filled it up to 100% full the next few times you started the vehicle the needle would start around 1/4 full then bump itself up slowly to full.

Trying to self-diagnose these things will end up being more time then its worth, take it in and get it looked at by either a dealer or certified mechanic.

Didn't volvo do a recall on all 2016 (?) model year cars for this? Some of them even ended up dying during driving since they indicated like a third but in actuality were empty?

Ours is doing this at the moment, wife picked it up today asking if I had noticed it.. booked it in 2 weeks time.

Just hoping if it "thinks" it's out of petrol it won't turn the car off @ 110km and instead of just keeps warning!

Inaccurate fuel gauge is a fairly common issue in earlier XC60's. Plan to leave your car there (2 days should do). Diagnostics are tedious. There used to be prior approval required for repairs but I'm not sure whether or not that's been lifted.

Repair usually involves replacement of fuel pump and/or fuel tank.

Great. We'll see. I'm getting my R inspected in the next couple weeks so I'll mention something to them. I'm fairly certain they applied an update to it once before, but my wife is telling me its really been acting up lately with less than 1/2 tank. Above 1/2 tank its fine. It never gets parked on an incline and is always in the garage, so the conditions are identical.

So we did ours today, they updated the computer and said problem fixed. What they updated, no idea considering it only had a service a month or so ago where everything was updated!

Wife didn't see an issue but I "believe" I did see the issue this morning, didn't in the afternoon. She'll drive tomorrow so fingers crossed it's gone and I just imagined it.
