I have to get my windshield replaced. I think I am going to get it replaced at Safelite. Upon getting an estimate I was navigated to a page for recalibrating the Advanced Driver Assistance System. Safelite offers to perform this recalibration for $300. I have the following questions:

1. Is this required?
2. Did you do this with the glass company or at the dealer?
3. How much was the total for your windshield replacement?

$300 just for the calibration? Wow.

I've done several and we charge an hour. However, I've started seeing a lot come in with the ASDM not level so I will have to start checking them all after windshield replacement before calibration. I'll probably charge 1.3 or 1.5 to check and adjust the ASDM and then calibrate everything.

I'm getting my windshield replaced today due to damage from a stone thrown by a truck. Progressive will only pay for an aftermarket windshield (other than for current year models). Given that I would have to pay $400+ to get the OEM, I reluctantly opted for the aftermarket.
While my XC60 T5 is a base model, it does have City Safety and Rain Sensor. I asked the glass vendor about the need for recalibration, and was told that it probably would not be necessary as his techs do not "unplug anything" when they replace a windshield. He also told me that I would get a warning light if calibration was needed, and if so, my insurance carrier would reimburse me for the dealer cost of same.

Tech, can you provide some insight please?

you'll get city safety erroneously activating (as i have recently seen) as well as possibly rain sensor faults. I have yet to see a volvo with city safety work with an aftermarket windshield from safelite.

The scariest was just a few weeks ago when the lady said it would activate on the road while cruising and nobody around her after the aftermarket windshield was put in. No amount of calibration would fix it. Also, there is no calibrating for rain sensor failure.

I had my windshield replaced through Geico on my XC60 and they knew to only use OEM.

Our windshield guy at our dealer replaces windshields ALL THE TIME with OEM and he never unplugs everything and while no failures arise, VIDA does say calibration is required (1 hour of labor).

The procedure for replacing the windshield does call for calibration no matter what.

I have had many cars brought in for the calibration after the windshield was replaced. Some had warning messages, some did not. However, I don't know how long the car was driven after replacement so maybe it wasn't driven long enough for the fault to be detected.

And I have seen ASDMs that need to be adjusted after the glass was replaced as well. I have no idea if any of these customers were reimbursed by their insurance or if the insurance paid the bill straight from us.

If insurance is paying for it, they should pay for the complete job according to procedures outlined in the service manual, which includes calibration.

Just replaced the windshield on my 2018 XC60 with an 'aftermarket' windshield, manufactured by Fuyao, an OEM Volvo (and many others) glass supplier. It produces auto glass around the world including the US, China and Russia plus Germany, Japan and South Korea. Total cost was $906 Cdn, including tax and calibration done at a local auto glass shop. Note that Volvo does not make any of it's own glass nor do the local dealerships do any glass installation - it is contracted out to local shops. In order for this windshield to void any warranty, Volvo must prove that the windshield was instrumental in causing the mechanical malfunction of any engine, transmission, electrical part or any other item covered under the vehicle warranty. In short, it is a Volvo OEM windshield without the Volvo name on it.
