White Residue on Interior Door Panels

Has anyone else noticed that the plasticky door trim parts tend to get white residue on them that are very hard to remove? I'm talking about the flat part right below the window where you would rest your arm.

I'll use armorall interior cleaner which works for a day or two, but the same spots keep coming back. I'll grab some pics later but just wondering if this is just me or something common with our cars. I swear there was a thread that mentioned this before but for the life of me I cannot dig it up through the search function.

I thought I damaged the surface
This seems to be a common problem, unacceptable for Volvo who wants to be a premium class

On the new car I have to use chemicals to remove white residue on door panels - is it a hidden camera?

I was the owner of more than 15 cars, I have never experienced anything similar

Just started noticing the same white residue on both 2017 and 2015.5!

For those in Canada I found a bottle of 303 on Amazon for $25 so I'll be giving that a try in a day or two, given that nothing else I used from the auto shop has been able to keep the white stuff away.

The good thing is that the 303 seems to be some higher quality stuff (at least ready the product description). So might as well end up using that on the rest of the interior as well to keep from UV wear.

I posted about this a couple of weeks ago. It cleans off easily but comes right back. At first I thought it was from oils on my fingers but now realize that it seems to appear on its own. Then I thought maybe because mine was one of the first built in China that the material was sourced in China (?) & was the reason for the problem. I also think there was another thread before mine but could not find it.

I would not use Armorall on the interior or exterior vinyl. It WILL eventually bleach the black vinyl white regardless of what the bottle says on it. Use a good automotive vinyl restorer like Aerospace 303 or Vinylex. Both of these are great for protecting vinyl from UV damage and drying out.

303 has a duller finish and IMHO is better for the interior, less glare. Vinylex leave more of a gloss finish.

Today I was doing some business near the dealer & decided to stop & ask them about the "white residue" that keeps coming back on the inside door panels. The service writer looked at it, seemed surprised, & said he had not seen this issue nor had he heard about it from any other owner. He scheduled an appointment when the "detail team" could check it out. Don't know if he meant reps from Volvo USA or certain dealership personnel, but appt is in about 10 days based on their availability & availability of a loaner car. It will be interesting to see what they say.

I read a thread a while ago in a MB forum about this happening in Mercedes cars that had MB-tex seats.

So I took my XC60 in to the dealer today to check out the "residue". They had their interior detailer check it out. Said he has seen it once before on an XC90. He is not sure what it is but suspects it is a reaction to oils on the skin of those who have experienced this problem. He can't explain why I have never seen this issue before despite having owned maybe 25 cars including 6 other Volvos. He cleaned it with Simple Green this morning & it has not reappeared yet, but I won't know for sure for at least several days, as it seems to come back slowly. The interior guy said to use Simple Green or a similar "organic" cleaner with no ammonia. This product will not bleach, fade or stain the door panels. Now we just wait to see if it comes back.

2 days since the dealer cleaned the door panels to perfection with Simple Green & those white marks are starting to re-appear. I purposely rubbed my fingers on the panels in a couple of places to see if I can definitely relate this to skin oils. The spots I specifically rubbed do not seem to be where the marks are showing, despite common sense telling me it must be from my skin. Passenger side panel is nowhere near as noticeable which suggests that it is skin related (my wife is only in the vehicle occasionally). But assuming it is skin related, what is different about this Volvo compared to the many cars I have owned over the years including numerous other Volvos? In any event, I guess this is just something I will have to live with & clean the door panels frequently.

This is my only complaint about this car: the door panels. Coming from a 2016 XC90 Inscription with the leather door panels, the xc60 door panels are super cheap in comparison. If Volvo added another $1,000.00 to the luxury seating package and included leather wrapped door panels, I would opt for that option. Also, the armrest on the door panels and center console is not leather wrapped, it’s faux.
