Water under floor mats

Got up this morning to clean out the s40. Was going to hose off the rubber floor mats I have (OEM Volvo) to clean a little bit of dirt off of them. As I removed the left rear one first, I noticed a lot of water underneath the mat. It isn't puddled, but it is significantly damp/wet with some drops of water visible. The little white dots that are seen in the first attached image are all drops of water. There is a must smell that is coming from the carpet as well.

A few months ago I noticed a must smell, but thought it was from the wet snow on people's shoes. We got a car air freshener that also absorbs moisture and it solved the problem.

We had a rain this morning, but I'm not sure how bad it was because I was asleep. I can't seen anywhere on the car where there would be a leak into the cabin, but what confuses me is that it's wet under all the floor mats EXCEPT the front passenger floor mat. Underneath that one it's completely dry.

Any ideas would be appreciated. I'm going to go ahead and clean this out for now and hope it was a one time thing, but I'd definitely like to fix. Thanks!

Note: I have an 06 s40 2.4i if that helps at all.

Your drivers side sunroof drain shrunk and is pouring water direcrly into your car. You need to replace and secure the drain hose. Take out all the seats and carpets to dry completely or else that smell will get much worse and it will start molding under the carpets.

How exactly would I go about fixing the sunroof drain? I suspected this was the issue based on all of the other people having the same problem. I'll take a look at it now. Is there a write-up on here?

8mm bolt holds the a pillar on. Remove the old drain. Get new drain hose from dealer. On your car you only need to buy one set to do both sides unlike the c30. Cut the new ones a little longer than the old one you removed. Use any type of adhesive to secure the hose. I use ultra grey gasket maker.

You will have to remove (or lift) the seats and pull the carpets. There is 1 1/2" of open cell foam under them carpets! That's aboput two gallons of water. Water travels front to rear, but not side to side. One side might still be dry. You can quickly check by pulling the plastic carpet trim and folding the edge of the carpet back to get to the bottom of the pan.

Interesting. I think I'll go ahead and do both side drains then.

Do you know about how long it'd take to take the seats out and all and let the car air out?

Is the seat removal easy? It's supposed to rain later today, so I can park under a tree, just want to get this fixed soon.

With power tools and experience it only takes 20 minutes to have the car gutted. The car airing out is not the issue, it's the carpets. They can take a long time to dry depending on the amount of water. Take them out and step on them to get rid of as much water as possible, then hang them in the sun if you can and poke a bunch of holes in the foam to speed the process. You can put the seats back in and plug the connectors in while the carpets dry if you need to drive your car. Just don't turn it on with them unplugged because it will set an srs code.

Hopefully I'm able to do this today.

Removed the a-pillar and the sunroof drain was loose and seemed to not be connected. I'd like to replace even if the issue was it wasn't connected to the bottom part (pictured)

I called the dealer and they said there is an upper and lower part, front and rear. What exactly am I looking for? I'd like to just replace the whole drain if the issue is reoccurring on these cars. Better to get it all out of the way than to wait a few months and find out the other side needs it too.

Part numbers anyone? Or what exactly should I ask for? Thanks!

You only need one set from the dealer to do both sides. No issues with the rears. Dont even go back there. But 100% do both sides or you'll be doing this again very soon. And the reason the drain isnt in that black rubber anymore is because they get hard and shrink. Thats the whole issue.

Yes I can wait. Depending on price and availability, I might just do what ducktape did and get hose from a hardware store. Cheaper for sure but I do like OEM stuff. I'm gonna keep up on radar and if it's supposed to rain later I'll wait on letting the floor dry out till this weekend, but hope I can do it today

I didnt' buy any dealer parts when I fixed mine.

Step 1: I pulled out the rubber fitting at the end of the hose. The end is all choked off like below. Cut off a half an inch or so to open that baby up.
*Note* This is pretty critical. Mine was clogged up with debris and even if I cleaned it out it will just clog up again. This will cause water to back up and no good comes of that. Open up the end and everything just works better.

Step 2: get a length of metal pipe which has an ID that is slightly larger than the OD of your existing drain hose. Stuff it in the rubber fitting. I chose to cover that joint with adhesive-lined shrink tubing so it can never come apart and is absolutely water tight.

Step 3: Put a tiny bit of vaseline on the lip of the rubber fitting and use the metal pipe as a handle to pop that bad boy back in the place. Super easy. Hashtag winning.

Step 4: Stuff your existing sunroof drain hose into the metal pipe. I chose to again use adhesive lined shrink tubing to seal this joint. Water tight. Never coming apart.

Hmm... I pushed my passenger side rear floor mat, and when i pushed it, sounded little bit of squishy (im not sure if that right word). Carpet is dry everywhere in the car. And sunroof drains are working right. Maybe the mat itself is making that noise? I really hope that the sound is not water.

Next car will be without sunroof, that´s sure.

I love having a sunroof, but know over time it can come with it's disadvantages. I'll be home late tonight, so tomorrow and Monday I'll work on getting the seats and all pulled

I did check again, and that passenger side rear mat is wet. Not top of that mat any wet, but when pushing that mat you can hear wet sound. Under the passenger seat is some tubings (ac tubes?) and carpet is also wet there. So maybe the ac tubes are causing the problem?

I would heard of, if the problem would be so extreme, like that video.

And that mat will not dry without pulling that out?

What do you think about this method? No carpet removing

Yeah I plan on doing it later today. Afterwards I'm gonna put my seats back in so I can drive it and then hang the foam outside to air out.

My only worry is if I let it dry out and then we don't get the drain fixed properly that it'll happen again.

I actually think I might do this. I'd like to do part of it with copper pipe so it doesn't shrink, but at the same time if it were a single run it wouldn't matter.

Do you know how to access the top part of the tubing to where it connects to the sunroof itself? Do I need to remove the headliner?

Also, when removing the carpet foam, do I need to remove the center console?

Okay I'm confused. The drains: they're there to drain water. But if my sunroof is always sealed when it rains, where does the water come from? Isn't there a seal around the glass? Or does it not deal properly? I never drive with the sunroof open when it's raining

Never understood that part either. But I didn't do the copper thing. That's up to you. Plenty of ways to fix it.

Okay makes sense. I'll probably stick to a permanent solution, but the nightmares I've read about this issue are crazy. I just want to fix it and not have to take the seats out again to dry the foam

You can do as ducktape says, and pop off the door weater strip to get to the sunroof gutter pan. You'll need to open the windshield wiper cover from the engine side to make sure the drain is through BOTH layers of the firewall.

How do I do the windshield cover? I heard someone cracked their windshield doing that
