VVT solenoid question

My CEL led the dealer to a "faulty" VVT solenoid. They changed it, and the code still came up. They changed it again... still the codes come up for a Variable Valve Timing solenoid. They checked the wiring - it's good.

The car runs fine, but it has a salvage history so naturally the warranty is void. Knowing this, I'm not convinced they put their heart into this diagnosis.

I looked at the wiring and got 13 volts at the connector, but it didn't vary with engine speed. Shouldn't the computer vary the voltage in order to cycle the solenoid on/off?

How can a do it yourselfer check the functionality of this solenoid?

Any intelligent ideas would be appreciated.

Re: VVT solenoid question (carmonkey)

the voltage is pulsed as with most solenoids, also most triggers now days are ground triggers, ie there is constant voltage to the to one side. Only one bolt holds these in, so you can take em off and see them working. I've never heard of one failing so I'd check for a cut in the harness.

thanks oldman,

you mean to pull it out and start the engine to see it working? Is that safe for the engine? Should I plug the hole with something while the solenoid is out?

I'm scared ****less to blow the engine, I know what they sell for

(even used it's at least 3 grand)

Can't really test it that way. The valve is hydraulically actuated, the engine needs to be running pretty much. There are built-in tests but you need the Volvo equipment to run them.

To the OP - I would ask the dealer to escalate to the regional tech. It certainly sounds like something complex, and you really don't want to pay for a fishing expedition. If the dealer won't/doesn't, then maybe call Volvo yourself.
