Volvo XC60 PCV Problems?

Hello everyone!
I am once again far away from home and having an issue with my XC. When the car is idling there is a rhythmic squeak from the engine. The squeak goes away when I remove the dipstick. When I remove the dipstick there is a huge WHOOSH of air. Am I having a PCV system related problem? Please chime in with any ideas or suggestions. Approximate mileage is 67,800.
My car is a 2011.5 XC60 T6 AWD.
Thanks!!

It is the Pcv. I had this on my c-30 and had to replace the little box with the diaphram in it. I had to get the dealer to call volvo N.A because there is a tsb out on it and they wouldn't do it. I haven't looked on my xc60 to see where it is exactly, but that's your problem. How are you on your oil changes?

I had the oil changed 3,000 miles ago with Castrol Full Synthetic. I checked the oil before I left Indianapolis and it was right on the max line but after I got down to the Blue Ridge Mountains in Georgia it was only 1/3rd up the Cross Hatched portion. I'm going to go by Advance Auto parts and get a quart of oil later today.

Actually, we were wondering if your oil changes happen regularly and at what intervals. Do you go the full 10,000 miles between changes or longer? This is to rule out the possibility of a clogged PCV.
Are you the first owner? If not, when did you take ownership (car mileage?).

It does sound like a clogged PCV, judging from your symptoms. This is unusual, you might be the first person with this issue here.

Should I be worried about my car breaking down? I'm not heading home until Friday.

I started it up to move it in because there was a storm coming and the car shuddered and did not want to start. After it took much longer than normal to start it did not want to idle right as it was fluctuating from 400-900 RPM

How urgent is it to get repaired? Do I absolutely need to go do a Volvo dealer before I go home Friday? I'm staying in the Appalachian Mountains so the car is working quite hard at times.

I've owned the car since new and have had the oil changed every 7,500 under Safe and Secure. Since that ran out, I've been changing it every 5k using Castrol full synthetic. The closest dealer is 1.5 hours away in Chattanooga

Hey Zach, sorry to hear about your issues. It seems a shame that you're already having a failed PCV system, but the 2005+ S40/V50's definitely had this issue as well, even at low mileage. The pipe from the oil trap to top of the motor was a poor design, made of cheap plastic instead of rubber and also had accordion bends in it. I don't know if the XC60 pipe is like this or not, never seen one. On the 40/50's there was a TSB and the dealer would fix the problem for free. You might want to check into that for your car.

As an aside, I grew up Indy, and lived for a while in TN. Chattanooga is your closest dealer for sure, but if you feel like you can make over the hilly Monteagle stretch of I-24 between Chattanooga and Nashville there's also Darrell Waltrip Volvo in Franklin, TN. I don't know if Jamie Putnam still works there as the parts manager, but maybe give them a call too.

Ok. Thanks for the great info! For now I'm waiting on a Check Engine Light to come on or the car to start running rough. As of now it only makes the noise when it is idling and hot. What will happen if I wait to get this fixed?
Thanks everyone for the help!

Well, too much crankcase pressure can ultimately lead to things like blown cam seals or rear main seals, so really hard to say what could happen if you wait. I assume you mean wait until you get back to Indy? Personally, if it were, I might try to make it, but that's me and I'm in no way endorsing that you do the same. That's also because I hate shelling out big bucks to dealers and I usually fix most all of my issues myself. If you were driving the car lightly for a few short trips and not romping on it I might say you could do that, but you have a 400+ mile trip back home, and you're in the hills now. You do have two dealerships though on your way back. I would call them both and find out about parts availability and cost of the repair.

Thanks, I'm going to try to nurse it home. Tom Wood Volvo has the parts for it on the way and I have an appointment for Monday. Fingers crossed I make it without any issues!

I wouldn't anticipate any issues. At worst you may get a rear main seal leak, but I've yet to see a bad oil trap on an I6 engine create a leak. You may also get a Check Engine Light due to the unmetered air being drawn in past the seals. It's excessive crankcase VACUUM, not pressure, so the risk of a leak is lower in my opinion. I have seen it create cam seal leaks on the S40/V50 cars, so it is possible. The oil trap design is completely different that the P1 cars BTW.

Ok. Thanks for the awesome info!!
Since you're a Volvo Master Technician,
do you think the Transmission fluid should be changed in my Vehicle? My dealer is refusing to do it and they are claiming it's a sealed unit. I saw in my maintenance book for it to be changed at 52,500 miles (85,000 km) if you tow or use it as a Taxi but they still won't change the fluid. I currently have 68,000 miles (110,000 km) What do you recommend I do? I don't want to do this service myself on such an expensive part.
Thank you for your help!

Ok. Is there a VIDA reference number for this procedure I can give them so they can look it up? Thanks!

#27 ·
ZNorm- good luck with the issue. Any chance you have a recording of the noise? Mine has recently begun a little rythmic squeak or chirp at cold start ups and sometimes while idling while the engine is still warming. I was thinking it was belt related, but your post makes me think it could be otherwise. I haven't had any rough idling or running yet though.

I would be happy to take a video for you but it has stopped making the noise today. Even when I take the dipstick out there is no whoosh of air or anything. (Knock on wood) The car is running like it's brand new. (Knock on wood again) [emoji39] I'm still going to take it to the dealer Monday just to check the PCV system and to tighten the lower and upper Axle retainer bolts and lower torque arms, AGAIN! When I go from Reverse to Drive there is a clunk and the car jolts. I can't figure out why those keep coming loose.. thebracko, do you have any ideas? Spending $111 on this for the second time is getting to be a bit annoying.

I just noticed that the noise started again in the McDonald's drive thru. If it's still doing it when I get home I will be sure to take a video.

Tapatalk won't keeps freezing when I try to upload the video. I'll try again on my laptop later.

Here's a video I took when I got home. Put some headphones on so you can hear it better. Let me know if you want me to take a better video.

Thanks for posting this up. That noise when you pulled the dip stick was a vacuum break? Significant release/break.

Mine sounds pretty similar, maybe a slightly different squeak tone. It also doesn't last nearly long enough for me to pop the hood and listen. I even had my wife fire it up with me standing over the open hood a few times, and of course; no noise.

Anybody know if there would still be the vacuum break noise if your not getting the squeak/whistle at idle/start-up, if the oil trap is the culprit?

Got my car back today after having another S60 T5 AWD rental. They ended up replacing the Oil Trap box on the top of the engine and no more squeaking!
Thanks everyone for your help!!

^Nice, congrats on the victory. The noise on my car is so infrequent and short lived when it does occur, but it sounds just like your video. I'll pull the dipstick a few times in the next couple of days and see what the vac pressure is like.

The $60 was for the tech's time to diagnose it but it was refunded because I already told them what was wrong. The $24 that was left over is for Shop supplies.

Just got a call back from the dealer; not covered for me. So that sucks. And my local dealer's labor is about twice as much as receipt ZNorm posted, unless that was for a half hour of work.

What's your dealers rate?

Hi there,
It seems I also have a problem with PCV/oil trap system (are they the same?!). Currently I am trying to "debug" the cause of rough idle and misfires in mostly cylinder number 5 (according to VIDA, CEL registers random misfire). I was advised that it could be caused by failed oil trap as I do have vacuum when trying to pull of the oil cap. Could it be related? Did anybody experience misfires/rough idle with PCV failure?

2010 volvo xc 60 t6 pcv issues

Hello guys, I'm a little late to the party here. I previously found this forum because my Volvo is having the same squeaky issues your guises did. Yes, it makes the swoosh noise when you pull a dipstick. Im thankful its not a belt issue. I bought the trap now I need to find a shop to do it, anybody know a good shop to do it in metro Detroit or flint?

21, college student, LOVE my xc60 been in 2 accidents and she still drives great!!
