Hi. Would like to hear your feedback. I have XC60 T8 2019 (made in China LYW) 20.000km and my father has XC60 2018 (made in EU) 50.000km. I have issues with rattles and plastic parts squeaking. I compare both cars and can say XC60 made in Europe is better put together. Inside plastic is harder on touch, rubber around windows is harder what makes not fixed so well…

I have window rattles, door trim rattles, door pannel rattles, dashboard rattles, intellisafe rattles.

My father has non of these. Its obvious they dont use so quality plastic and their glues are not that quality or or they just dont use some dampeners. But the difference is there.

So Im curious what are your experiences with Chinese LYW or other production plants cars.

We have owned three Swedish built XC90's (2017, former 2020, and a 2021). They have rattles in the seat belt height adjustment assemblies, door panels, headliner, occasionally the center console cup holder area, Intellisafe, and the 2021 has a rattle in the dash board. It's not a China thing. It's a Volvo thing.

A lot of rattles have to do with how a car has been cared for. Cars driven over more rough roads are going to get more noise than ones that have been driven on nice equatorial highways. If you bought both used, it's hard to know how each might have been cared for. It's possible one was just "built on a Friday". Lots of topics over the years talking about production location and quality and more often then not folks report little difference, if anything, a slight edge to the Chinese. I think a better approach here might be to find ways to improve on the rattles you're experiences and not focus on where the cars came from. In the US you would still be under warranty so your dealership might have service bulletins on how to address some of those and improve your ownership experience. I would start there.

MY2018 and 2019 they had a problem with door trim parts, white residue of unknown origin appeared.
I never solved this problem, I tried more different plastic cleaners but without success

My XC60 is one of the first XC60's assembled in China. I now have almost 50k miles & the only issue I have had is the frequent appearance of white "residue" on the indoor trim. It appears to be related to a reaction to the oils in my skin as it shows up where I touch the door trim. Although annoying, it is easily cleaned but comes back again. I now have almost 50k miles & otherwise have no issues (rattles or otherwise). Granted I have the Inscription trim with massaging seats, B&W, Polestar, etc but I am quite happy also with the level of luxury. I love this car.

The plastics are no different regardless of where they are built. Internal Volvo findings show cars built in China or in America have fewer warranty claims and higher quality overall.

The reason for this is much newer and more advanced assembly line practices, robots, training, etc. your experience is not common. Volvo lately has been making some of the most rattle free cars I’ve ever seen. My Volvo has fewer rattles than my Audi TT or R8 V10.

For sure my Audi Q7 is the squeakiest of all my cars...

Made at Torslanda, various minor squeaks and rattles since new. I concur about the annoyance, but must factor in bad roads, 20" wheels and temperature extremes. I've read similar complaints about class rivals (X3, GLB, etc.). I take some solace in knowing that the noises are conspicuous mainly to me, and that most/all can be addressed with some DIY cleverness.

I haven't owned a vehicle that didn't have some rattle or noise. My current 2019 Forester and 2020 Tesla Model 3 both rattle and squeak in different ways. My Audi RS7 had speaker rattles and the door handle had an awful squeak. I'm fully expecting my upcoming XC60 to develop some noise someday.

There's also noise dampening material that you can install in the floors and doors that will help. You can also wrap wires and anything that's prone to make noise with Tesa Tape

My 2022 XC90 T8 rattles like a can full of bb’s. The door panel on the rear driver’s side and the panel next to the passenger side third row both creak and groan when any pressure is applied. I have taken everything out of the car and took it to the dealer. The service writer heard the rattles and kept the car for 2 days. Of course once the mechanic goes for a ride it was silent, and was quiet for a couple of days. I really think they did something to try and temporarily secure those panels to no avail. The rattles are back and my wife was able to record the sound on her IPhone. She is close to getting rid of it. No $70,000 plus semi-luxury car should be like this.

You took a 2022 XC90 one time to a dealer to solve a rattle and it wasn't resolved.....so the next logical step is to trade it off? Come on now, squeaks and rattles can be notoriously hard to fix, and sometimes a process of elimination is all you can do. If it were mine I'd take it back to my dealer and let them fix it...it's that simple. The warranty means they are obligated to fix it or Volvo buys it back, so I'm pretty sure there is a very high motivation factor for them to fix it.

My Chinese-Built XC60, despite being 2018, has little to no rattles. The one time it did produce a rattle I managed to resolve it by just smacking the panel as hard as I could that managed to clip it back in, but then again the rattle developed after hitting a really deep pothole in Kansas.

There's a tariff that makes it unprofitable to continue importing Chinese-made vehicles.

My brand new 21 has around 6k miles on it and has a few rattles. Nothing major. Built in SWE. I never really thought much of it until seeing this post.

Coming from multiple brand new Wranglers in a row until this Volvo, the rattles in the Volvo are absolutely nothing compared to Jeep. Those things had more squeaks and rattles than a pirate ship lol.

I don't think it helps any that I'm on the low profile 21 inch run flat tires, which definitely contribute to harshness of ride, but now I am wondering if I should get them checked out if the 12/12,000 applies.

A good reminder that everything's relative. 👍

My preceding '14 Subaru Forester felt tight as a drum for eight years / 53k miles, so the XC60's rattles took me somewhat aback. But on considering that the Subie had 17" wheels, a more compliant suspension and an overall simpler interior — perhaps also the benefit of Japanese QC, in what was a new redesign of the brand's most important model — I've managed to rationalize it well enough. 😉

The 12/12k should cover any issues.

I think it is possible to judge only if you can compare yourself a car manifactured in Sweden vs. China with similar specs, trim, rims etc...

I am driving my first Volvo so can't comment on Volvo.

But I had a 3 series BMW built in South Africa which I replaced with a 4 series gran coupé built in Germany. They had same trim, same size of tyres, also both Run Flats, almost same configuration. They are on the same platform and front end, interior are almost the same.
The difference was night and day. 3 series had all kind of noises from everywhere. The 4 had nothing during 4 years, not a single rattle.

Now only thing to factor in maybe is the built process improvement. The 3 was from 2014 and the 4 was from 2018 after facelift. Maybe the facelifted 3 series as well resolved.

What I think is that it is very hard to compare unless you have one from each factory.

Also some of the posts show contradicting stats so again, hard to put a general rule.

In none of my four Volvos or three Porsches (all made in Europe, fwiw) have I ever had rattles or squeaks in the interior of the car, ever (suspension and outside moldings, yes). I have always felt that they have been better made than the other cars that we have owned since the 1990s (Ford, Toyota). That said, I know of plenty of Volvo and Porsche owners with interior rattles and squeaks from online forums, so I guess I've been fortunate, but I still think that these vehicles are made to better standards. My 2022 XC60 T8 ER is near-perfect in everything so far, two months into ownership and 1600 miles, except for some minor software glitches that have been annoying.
