Volvo S70 Tuning

Let me start off by saying that I am a Honda guy and dont know much about Volvos besides what I can see under the hood.
I have a buddy that came to me with a '99 AWD S70 looking to get some more out of it.

First off, I am searching around for some good suspension for him (if anyone can recommend a nice set of coilovers that would be amazing).

My best idea would be to keep it mostly stock, stick the White injectors on it and just tune for more pressure out of the turbo (not sure if there is an electrionic wastegate actuator or not).
I should also mention that it has an automatic transmission.

...However, my problem is, short of replacing the ECU with a Megasquirt, I have no clue how to tune the damned thing.

Ardideas.com for the cheapest, easiest tuning.

The 13T turbo is a "low pressure turbo" and will be a weak link, but an ARD tune for that specific turbo will still wake up the car significantly as it will raise the boost limit and alter timing slightly. Upgrading to a 15G/16T is common and will add a bit more punch. None of these three turbos will require larger injectors once tuned, however. The stock '99 injectors are fine for most people until they get into the 18T/19T turbo range.

Suspension for the AWD Volvos is very pricey because the rear end is different than their FWD counterparts. The S70 AWD isn't the best starting point either, because it has extremely soft and bouncy rear springs/shock absorbers.

Moral of the story: Honestly, a '99 S70 AWD is not the best starting point unless you have big bucks and some background with the platform. It takes a lot to get these cars to drive anything like a tight, modern sports sedan.

Hello,

www.wothrline.com has some great info on tuning practices and hardware setups. He used to tune also, not sure if he still does or not. He wrote my tune in 2009, similar car except mine is a '00. I went with a 15G and blue injectors, but he can tune for just about anything.

I disagree about the S70 AWD being a poor starting point. Mine is very fun to drive, and I've never had a problem with handling, etc. I do agree that the rear is a bit softer, but I wouldn't say "extremely soft and bouncy". Depends on what shocks the car is fitted with, as there are at least 3 factory options for rear shocks on the S70 AWD. Also depends on tires, sway bars, etc. Parts to lower the vehicle, etc will be difficult to find though because as Alex said, the rear suspension is totally different than the FWD models.

Anyway, if Jan is still tuning, I'd highly recommend him. Have to send the ECU to him (he's in Sweden), but it's well worth the trouble. Very knowledgeable guy, spent over 20 years working for Volvo, with most of them in powertrain development ;).

Hope this helps,

Joe
