Which cars used the hydraulic timing belt tensioner/actuator, and which ones used the simple mechanical one? I would assume you can switch to a mechanical tensioner here as the block castings remained the same through 98-00. Just need to know what to expect before I take on a new project. Thanks!

No you cannot.
I don't know the actual VIN break, you have to ask the dealer for that, but the later cars were built after approx Feb 1 1998

Engine serial is 1266127, not sure about the VIN though.

Lower than that used the hydraulic, after that used the mechanical setup. The two tensioner setups use different timing belts, and the bosses for the other tensioner aren't present on all engines, so the easiest way is to order the belt/tensioner for the engine you have.

Isn't the different tensioner one of the revisions that went along with ME7, variable cam timing and drive by wire?

Alrighty. I'm pre-vvt, me4.4. I didn't SEE a hydraulic tensioner, but I just glanced at it. Thanks guys!!
