Hello all, i hope i am not posting this in an incorrect section. I've been looking everywhere on the internet about some information as I am currently looking for a used v90 with an auto gearbox and diesel engine (either the 190hp D4 or the 235hp d5).

I am not sure if there are many people here that have any info regarding reliability, service intervals, etc for these models, as I guess diesel engines are not as popular in North America.

I was trying to find out mostly about common problems, service intervals (most importantly timing chain/belt replacement) and what kind of mileage is too much (or how much will be too much to buy used).

Thanks and sorry again if this is not in the right place!

D4 is on 11k km and D5 is at 23k km. Prior to v90 cc we had a SPA XC60 D5 as well and made 45k km without any issues. I think that D4 is less complicated because it lacks power pulse but honestly I just love the D5 more.

Cheers

The D4 is an excellent engine, it consumes very little (considering the weight of the car) and takes away some satisfaction if you press the pedal hard during an overtake.
Maintenance is scheduled every year, or every 30,000 km/60,000km/90,000km.
In Italy the base servicing is around 330 euros.

The D4 is an excellent engine...
Thanks for the info :) i currently also have my eye on a AWD D5 Inscription, just trying to figure out how affordable it is for me. This one is around 135k km, so i think it still has plenty more to do.
My plan is to take the family on a Euro trip someday travel gets better, and i think that it will be great in terms of comfort, etc...

Hi! I own a V90 D4 AWD automatic and I’ve been very happy with it. I think the consumption is great for such a big car and I’m also happy with the performance of the engine. I’ve had zero problems with the engine so far. The regular service here in Finland is every 30 000km and the timing belt change is 180 000km for this engine. I think these also apply to D5.

Hello, I have a V90CC D5 and I love the engine. I also love having AWD. In Poland AWD could be very handy in the winters but I think the D4 driving the AWD system could really be underpowered. The D3 shouldn't even be a consideration. 150 BHP is not enough for this car which is very heavy.
While I love the engine, the auto gearbox really pi55es me off!! It is very sluggish and slow to react. I believe that the Polestar optimization solves this problem but it is really expensive (€1000 in Ireland, £800 in UK) so my advice is to try and get a dealership to include Polestar as part of the deal. The engine pulls hard when you are in the right gear but the car is never in the right gear! At critical times like entering/leaving a roundabout or junction, the gearbox can leave you sitting for a whole second while it tries to choose a gear. You press the accelerator and nothing happens!! Then the gearbox suddenly drops to a gear that is too low for half a second and jumps back up to the correct gear. This nearly got me wiped out a few days ago while trying to sneak into a gap on a busy roundabout.

On the motorway at 125 KPH my V90 uses at least 7.6 l/100km (37 mpg). This is very poor for a 2.0 diesel in my opinion. In Ireland we usually expect to get at least 50 mpg from a 2.0 diesel. I have had VW golf (1.9), Caddy (1.9) Passat (2.0), Honda Accord (2.2) and Mazda 6 (2.2) and all of these diesels have returned over 50 mpg. Although none of them have had 235 BHP!!

The DPF system has not been causing any trouble as far as I can see. I haven't heard of anybody complaining about it and after 4 years this problem would have surfaced by now if it was going to be an issue. This is a major plus of the Volvo diesels over many other manufacturers.

Generally the car is absolutely fantastic. It is very sold and a pleasure to drive. It is a nice upgrade from my previous Mazda 6.

Polestar helps make it better but doesn't completely solve it...unless you always drive in Polestar mode. Generally speaking, this is not the most responsive transmission and it doesn't like being driven hard (downshifts from 3rd to 2nd and 2nd to 1st get jumpy after hard accelerations and upshifts during a short sprung of spirited driving).

The other cars you listed are also lighter, or much lighter, than the V90, so that has a direct impact on efficiency.

Yes reliability is very important but it is so annoying that Volvo released the cars with an unresponsive transmission software map when there was a much better map available. And it is even more annoying that they want us to pay €1000 for the better gearboxe software. The car should have been sold with the best possible setup on day 1.

I'v driven d5´s since... This new one is atleast as good old one's were. Powerpulse gives bit weird feeling, cause turbolag is missing. I´v been thinking what´s wrong, but power comes out just too smoothly- whithout any hazzle. Gaearbox? 8-speed is different than 6 speed and if you add powerpulse feeling is lots different as it used to be in diesels - much more advanced.
D5 AWD inscription 145 000 km powerpulse-hose brokeearlier, as they failed in almost everyone before they "invented" better hose/an changed those under warranty.

In "Dynamic" mode (select it from the central wheel) there is not any lag when you push the pedal. The car is ready, but it impact on fuel consummation for sure.
In "confort" mode the gearbox stays relaxed, and need few time to understand that you need power when you push the pedal, but it is what I aspect when I set Confort... If I need power I set Dynamjc mode... I use it typical on Mountain road whit many bends and hills

Thanks to all of you for your valued opinions and feedback, it was really helpful!
Thanks to that and being able to negociate the price a bit I am proud to say i will become a member of the Volvo family in a few weeks!
Decided to go with the Inscription d5, it has 138k on the clock, pretty much loaded with equipment and extras (only things i remember it doesn't have is the pano roof, keyless entry and the foot-operated trunk opener).

Just waiting for the registration process to go through (it is very lengthy and complicated here in Poland, for what i'm used to).

Once more, thanks all for your help!
