V70R engine swap options

Hey guys, Im an old member, but Im back in the Volvo game. I bought a V70R with a bad engine, and I need a replacement. From what I've read I know that the 2.4 T5 engine from a 05-09 S60 T5 or a 05-07 V70 T5 would be the best plug and play choice. However Im looking for one and losing my patience. I know that the LPT engines would run the car, but they have a lower CR, and they probably wouldnt run right on the R ECU tune.

What Im wondering is how bad of a choice the 2.3 T5 HPT motor from a 01 S60 T5? These seem to be readily available, I know the engine would bolt in, but would the car run right or would I need a custom tune? I assume I'd need but not obliged to swap the heads, and the stock turbo is pretty worn out too, so Id like to keep the T5 turbo as well.

Would it work?
Thanks

The problem with the motors other than the B5254T4 and the B5244T5 is that they dont have forged internals (correct me if im wrong). They cant take power like the R and T5 ones do. Not sure if the 2.3Ls need special tuning but generaly the 4T4 and 4T5 swaps dont. Id say keep looking. The 4T5 is worth it. Check with Re-Volv, Carpart.com, and other online junkers and Volvo junkers.

The 2.4 T5 has the same bore as the 2.3, only the stroke is longer.

Swedish do high performance 'Frankenstein' builds ;

2.3 engine
Crank of the 2.5R
Original 2.4 pistons
Head of the 2.5R with VVT

Even the 2.3 pistons have proven to withstand +400hp, there is no absolute need for forged pistons, stories that you need Wiseco pistons are hear-say-nonsense

So if you are in a hurry, get a 2.3, use the crank of your 2.5R and build the engine as desired.
if not, have patience and wait/look for a 2.4T5 and dont open it

I dont really want to put an R engine because its kinda crappy. From what ive read people have nothing but problems with them, either headgaskets or worn cylinder walls.

So it's a no-go for the 2.3T5 as a drop in replacement?
Never head gaskets. Shim block and you'll have no problem with cracked sleeves on a stock motor. I've never heard of cyl wall wear either.

No they actually have a higher compression ratio. the LPT B5254t2 has a 9.0:1 CR. The lpt would work for awhile till it cracks a cyl. I love how the lpt feels, and am looking forward to getting my k24 on my s80.
I just picked up a 05 T5 engine for my R but it wasn't cheap lol. Could just pick up another R engine for it I see them for sale usually cheaper than the 05-09 t5 engines.

damn, ya I messed that up. My main question now is, would a lpt engine plug and play in my R? What lpt is better a 2.5 out of a 2003 XC70 or a 2.4 out of a 2001 XC? Both are available, and confirmed running engines at my local junk yard. Otherwise I can be patient and wait for a 05 + T5.

If for example it died in a couple years, Ill be cool with that. Would give me time to build up a nice 2.4, in the meantime I want to sell my beater Civic, and drive the R.

You must be reading things pertaining to “school-boy” racers pumping them up to a point that makes them unreliable. There are bunches of 04-07 R’s with 200k+ and trouble free, other than standard maintenance. And there are more and more in the junk yard due to the cost to repair that avaerage fender-bender on any Volvo today in the eyes of the insurance companies.
In stock OEM configuration other than an exhaust/intake and maybe a mild tune, I have a friend with over 230k on his.
It will cost you more to reinvent the wheel in swapping another Volvo engine into your new V70r wagon than buying a junk yard more.....

Hmmm, yes there are a bunch of trouble free ones out there, both stock configuration and tuned.
But also stock engines who went bust, so that doesn't say anything.

The easy road may not be the most sensible, there are members out here who did a 2.5 swap 3 times, could be bad luck, but in the end you are always taking a risk with a (unopenend) junkyard engine.

Bottomline, 2.5's are fragile, if you want a reliable S60/V70R you have to invest time and money, part of driving such a car, otherwise you better pick another model/brand.

Cheap, fast and reliable...pick 2 :D

Have you called Erie Vo-vo, Strandberg Auto, and V&S auto dismantlers? If not, google them and call. I think they all warranty the motors and they all ship.

I don't understand why people are saying you have to swap it out in the future. You're not going for power upgrades on it. It'll be fine as long as you put premium fuel in it and not romp on it in very hot weather.
