V70 roof rails é rack

I would like to put a roof rack on my V70.
Most of the shops only seem to sell the crossbars.
Are there any recommended rails? I would rather avoid the Volvo premium for this and buy something that works but isn't OEM.

Those go in those small holes
They're a different load rack but that's your best bet and the cheapest.
I have a pair here from an 850, probably will not fit a P2.
If you want to find out if they do fit, you can have them cheap

I'd just go for the removable crossbars that Rich posted above. I got a pair, and they are seriously great. Since they're the same square bars as Thule (in fact, they're made by Thule) all the accessories fit perfectly. I bought a fairing for the front, and got a set of Thule lock cores to make sure nobody steals them off my roof. They go on in 5 minutes and I've hauled a ton of stuff with them. Most recently I strapped on the biggest cargo box Thule makes, filled it with about 200 pounds of stuff and drove the family from Ohio to California. When we got there, I had a 10' 5" surfboard strapped up every day (we went on a surf trip down to Newport and had 6 boards up there at one point) and it stayed solid as a rock.

What I like the most about them, though, is that I can take them off and my wagon looks sleek and streamlined again!

Do you have to remove any of the rubber trim in the gutters to attach those?
Are you saying buy from a Volvo dealer? Might be more expensive than Thule in a local car store?

Open your doors and look at the holes they mount in.
As I said I have a pair of these off an 850. I have no idea if they will fit or not (go find out).
If they do fit you can have them very cheap

SecondBreakfast is obviously the one to reply as he has the bars and I have the rails but I'd guess the bars somehow clip around the full length plastic trim and attach to metal plates underneath. Otherwise the entire trim would have to be removed and cut but I can't see that being the case. Putting a blanking plate in when you're not using the bars would be a very messy solution.



@JRL Fitting on an 850 is quite different.

Strength of the cross bar connection



How strong are the fittings in your picture? They look like they are bolted to the roof but not to a strong point like a roll bar. They look kind of flimsy compared to the XC roof rails. Can the cross-bar really hold a load of up to 220 lbs in a monster Thule box driving 75 mph into a headwind without deforming the rain gutter or roof moulding? A Volvo mechanic at Fisher Volvo in Portland thinks they might hold a max of 70 lbs but all the official Volvo literature on the bars says 220 lbs. New roof cross-bars cost $200 from Fisher while the xc style roof rails cost $575 + labor.

OP, the pic I posted was of the mounting bracket once I'd removed the full length plastic trim. I had to do this to fit the rails. As SecondBreakfast says, you won't have to remove it to fit the bars. The full length plastic trim is flush to the body as you look at it but feel the other side towards the centre of the roof where all the crap like dead leaves and such collect. You should feel the bracket underneath. If they're really not there then for some reason they've previously been removed.

Wow! Suggestion. Why not go and "help" someone else? Maybe you can sell your 850 roof bars to them?

Someone above said "Nope, no removal of anything required. " - that's why I couldn't see how the hell I could attach anything.
If the bracket is underneath the trim, then I have to remove the trim to get to it or at least move it aside so I can attach and screw in the bars from the top side of the roof?! Otherwise how else can it attach to the bracket if it is covered with trim?

I think you're still missing it. You shouldn't have to remove anything least of all the full length plastic trim. It's a nightmare. Anyhoo, looking at the library pic posted by SecondBreakfast I'd say the bars clamp one side onto the bracket under the trim (it's accessible) and then tightened down onto the rubber feet which sits on the plastic trim.

Clear as mud :D

Agreed. Zero trim needs to be removed. None. The clips should be there (post #12), if you have a p2 (post #8). Then the factory bars are all you need (post #15). When they're on the car, nothing touches the paint. When they're off the car (takes honestly just a few minutes to add or remove), you have a clean no rail or cross bar roofline. There is a set (expensive for no locks) for sale here at this link on SS. I got mine here for 100 bucks, and they were like new with locks. -IPD

Another +1 vote for the load bars. I have a pair, and they are so easy to take on/off it's absurd. Literally, it takes under 2 minutes to go from a smooth roof to a car with load bars. I keep mine on a shelf in the garage and my Thule box hangs from the garage ceiling. I've got a bunch of other Thule stuff that's compatible that I've collected over the years. I've had racks on multiple cars before…but I've always left them on, because they were a pain to take on and off. There's a set in the classifieds right now for $160. That's better than from Volvo…but I've seen them go (with locks) for around $100 on here and on Craigslist. If you're not in a hurry, might be worth waiting. The locks are worth it for keeping the covers on the feet from popping up while your driving, as much as they are for security. Haha.

What not a lot of people know is that you can pick up a set of Thule lock cores (like these here) and they pop right into the Volvo load bars. I bought a set of 8 keyed-alike lock cores and now I have one key that works with my volvo roof bars, my Thule roof box, and my lockable surf racks. It makes it really nice to just have one key on your keyring that opens everything.

They work just fine.
For anyone needing rails, I have a set of black Euro rails and all the cut roof strips (also Black -metallic black off an R)
Windshield side rubber which is a part of the curved windshield strips are in so so condition but everything is there, I probably also have a pair of the clamp on load bars as discussed above which I would sell if I can find them.

I also have a heavy duty nylon net I would sell that hooks in the top side holes and straps tight into one of those hooks on the load floor. These work well and is 3 times the thickness and strength over those chintsy ones that pull out of the seat.
