I GET THE SAME THING , It Seems there is a Huge MPG Between 58Mph & 72 Mph - a 14Mph Spreed , It's Even Worst !
I Get 24 Mpg Average / Combined ! 26 Mpg If I Baby It Big Time
and Include a lot of Highway in there .
I got 28 Mpg on just Highway - state to state - doing about 68 Mpg !
Are Super Slabs everbody is doing 80Mph , If I start doing that then
24.5 Mpg !
I've Looked at Gearing, I Put Amsoil in Tranny got a Very Slight - Boost .2 Mpg , I added a K & N Cleaner for Better Flow Maybe another .2 Mpg - I'm
Changing all the Gear Fluids in Spring , as I Believe that after the Break In and Seating of the Bevel Gears , about 15,000 miles - Flush Them Out , but thats Me. - I think the Stock Plugs aren't as Good as they Could Be.
Will going to Denso's Soon - I will Up Date with more Info when I do .
Tested what You Mentioned Serveral Times as It doesn't seem to make sence. I Found that with a 12 Mph-15Mph Tail Breeze , MPG Shot Way Up ! So at this Point I think the Wagon AWD is to High -
Lowering It should Bring much better Aero Effect. increasing Mpg on

The AFR runs around 14.5- 14.7 - 1 This is Lean - so I'll Shot this to Ya !
I once Drilled Out a Mid Range Jet on a Carb - 4 Cly Mazda
from .032 to .090 - for more Power - I had Notice that during a Plug Change the Plugs Looked Really Light Gray ,so It seemed this was a Go
for Power , Well after doing this and Testing My Mpg - Went Up 2 MPG
and I had more Smooth Power when I asked for It - The Plugs were also Running Now a Light Med. Brown ! ( I could Not Believe This ) I Tested More and Had My Brother Confirm It also - just to make sure It wasn't something to do with My Driving Style - He Got the Same Thing - Two Tanks Fulls Later !
Now Think about the Fact I have Heard that Volvo has a Thermal Coating on the Pistons ?

Condition ! - So More Fuel Cools Better , more Power - also there might be just a very little Oil Wash Effect at say 13-1 Med. Brown on the Rings ! ( This Is Why I have Been Bitching at Volvo about Direct Injection)

Furthermore when driving something that Lean & Being AWD the sudden Drag that might be added for a 5 Mph Head Breeze Makes the Electronic Thottle body - Constantly make Little Changes - this Loads Up the ECU Buss , now If You are Driving and Not Using the Criuse , It's Even Worse !
If the Info Is Correct about the Coating , It Should Have Been more of a
Friction Coating , Instead of Thermal ! - I for one are looking into ways to make the ECU run the entire Map a little Richer , the Plugs I'll Be Using
will be IKH22 - this is Important the IK20 or 22's are 3/4" Reach
IKH22 are 1" Reach all the AWD have a Thicker Head Material Like the R Motor's the FWD - S40 use the IK20 - going to 22 is One Step Cooler !
