Upholstery question: Charcoal vs Maroon Brown

I'm about to finalize my order for a MY19 Inscription T8, and I need to choose between charcoal and maroon brown upholstery to go with the onyx black exterior. I currently have mocha leather seats with a mineral white exterior in my X5, and that upholstery is a little darker and more red than Volvo's maroon brown.

I know ultimately this is a question of personal taste. But I welcome opinions and suggestions, but mostly personal experience with the maroon brown, preferably with the onyx black exterior. Any regrets? Any second guesses? Does denim wash off like it seems to do with blond or amber? Does the fact that the pillars and headliner are black with maroon brown but light grey with the charcoal upholstery matter?

Too me, the charcoal seems to be the safe choice. I've had black/black with other previous cars and like it. I guess I'm trying to decide if the maroon brown with onyx black would be a killer combination or would be the kind of thing that I come to regret three months into my three year lease. Again, I totally get that this is a personal choice, but wanted to throw it out there for comments.

I would go check the maroon brown interior at the dealer, it’s a tricky color.
I was about to go for it but when I couldn’t change the wood trim into dark glossy wood like in the momentum + I walked away from it as the light wood trim with the maroon brown is not matching but somehow in the same color range which made it Not very appealing to me.

Check it out at a dealer and you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about.

Now if you could get the dark wood trim with it as an OSD go for it.

I wanted to make somehow a black liner in the doors to separate it from the leather.

As for the headliner/ pillars I vote black, otherwise you would end up with too many colors in your interior. (Dash black, door trim black, leather brown, wood trim light brownish....
you get the drift

That’s my opinion / taste.

Good luck at all cases.

I liked the Maroon Brown on my computer, and wanted to see it at the dealer in person. However, the dealer said they stopped ordering cars with maroon brown because nobody wanted to buy them. So in that case, yes charcoal is the safer bet.

Denim blue exterior here with Maroon Brown leather. Love it. Have light colored headliners which are neutral. Combo of black tailored leather dash and maroon brown leather seats is perfect for me. If I had purchased either an MB or Rover rather than a Volvo, I would have gone for brown leather anyway so my decision was made way early in the process.

We went Maroon Brown. We were going to go with Amber when looking in 2017. We saw the 2018 XC60 had the Maroon option and the dealer said it would be available on the XC90 for the next model year so we waited. Black is just too dark for that beautiful interior. Amber is nice, but you're constantly cleaning dye transfer off the seats. Maroon brown is a great color as it's a little darker, but not too dark. I do think the black headliner is the color to go for though. I don't really like light colored headliners. With the large sunroofs in cars there is so much ambient light to brighten up the interior.

One other thing too is the wood trim. I like the "open pore" look and the lighter wood vs the momentum trims. Even if it's real wood on the lower end trims, with the finish it just looks like cheap plastic imo.

Here is ours.

Agree. Maroon Brown does look great and compliments the Inscription's interior. We have Amber. Love it except for needing to clean the dye transfer.

I have a 2017 T8 Inscription in Onyx Black exterior and the Charcoal/grey interior. While I like the look of the maroon seats in the picture I find it too much given the rest of the car is charcoal/Grey. My wife really likes the fact that she can keep the panoramic screen closed yet still have the car very light inside. We have the leather dash and consequently the pillars and panoramic window is covered with a light tan/beige color material that is soft to the touch. Having said that it is a personal choice. I think what ever color you go with will be great. It is a beautiful interior to say the least.

I love my maroon brown seats. It is a lively color compared to charcoal.
Some contrast from the inlays is also fine to me.
In the end, it is your personal choice.

For headliner, my passengers in rear seats like the light gray one, not the charcoal ceiling and sun shades.
Driver and front passenger don't see much of it usually.

My 2 cents:
Charcoal / Black interiors will always look sophisticated and fit the bill. You can't go wrong...
HOWEVER
It's also boring, boring, boring and tends to suck the life out of an interior that has finely crafted details and adornment.
My cousin's husband leased an S500 w/black on black interior. He took me for a ride and I felt like I was sitting in Darth Vader's Tie Fighter.

I think you will appreciate the Maroon Browns highlights and gentle color contrast vs. sitting in a well of blackness with the Charcoal interior.
Additionally, it looks like you're in DC like me. While Brown is not much lighter than Black, come Late July, August you'll appreciate not having an interior that doubles as a heat sink and eats UV rays.

If you want to appreciate the lines and design, go white and blond.
White interiors wash out almost all design elements. It's worse than black, since instead of picking up light and shadow, will reflect almost all light.
Not to mention it makes the interior feel a bit clinical and sterile.

Be that as it may, get White or Blonde at your own peril. It picks up and shows every imperfection, speck of dirt, shirt / pants dye transfer, sweat and salt stain, etc. etc. wonderfully. You'll be making friends with your interior detailer since it will require 2x a year cleanings if you want any hope of it maintaining a beautiful appearance over the course of its life.

^^^That's sexy. Do the Maroon OP.
You can get a black/black car anytime, but that there, it just has a little something buttery and special in its presentation. Reminds me of a Connecticut Shade wrapper on a fine cigar resting inside a humidor made of fine wood.

Hey OP, I'll give you something else to think about.
Nearly 20 years when Audi released the first gen Audi TT Roadster, it came with the standard assortment of blah colored interiors.
But there as a curveball (pun intended), you could also order the peanut butter 'Baseball Mitt' leather interior. Later in the cycle it was offered in a wonderful brownish maroon colored leather that resembled an oiled and broken in baseball mitt topped off with herringbone style stitching on the sides.

People with apesh*t over either. It was very hard to find when the car went out of production. So while the other TT's lost value, if you had the brown baseball mitt interior, your residual would hold a bit higher and could charge a very modest premium over TTs with the black interior.

Point I'm making is, since this wasn't an option available previous, the Maroon Brown interior may end up being something more sought after in the secondary market when it comes time for you to part with the XC and may even help with resale value. Just something to consider. YMMV.

I've looked at a few pics of the Maroon brown interior and while the seats might be okay, the maroon plastic on the door panels would be a deal breaker for me. I am not a fan of colored plastics like that. Most re-sale buyers looking for an SUV like the XC90 will be looking for a black interior, though admittedly combined with Onyx black exterior is a little boring IMHO.

>>Most re-sale buyers looking for an SUV like the XC90 will be looking for a black interior<< Really?

Trust me guys, passengers don't cause damage to car seats. It's the driver's seat wearing off faster and severely compared to all others.

In fact, all other seats will remain fairly new or in good condition many years later, but the driver's will have creases, worn leather etc obviously owing to it being occupied always and more than any other seat.

Now, if you were to protect the driver's seat, there'll be minimal wear and there won't be any concerns about colour choices.

My car has 27000km and because I have a picnic sheet over my seat, it remains fresh as if I've just bought the car. My tan leather will thus increase my car's value when 100,000Km later, new would be buyers will find it pleasantly surprising to see the seat still in good condition.

Just protect your driver's seat and regularly apply good leather cleaner and conditioner monthly to keep it not only looking good, but smelling fresh and new again.

I ordered a Denim Blue with Maroon Brown interior. I would never buy a car with a black interior - point blank. So it's all a matter of opinion. I loved the look of the Amber, but I saw from other owners that jeans (denim) could rub off on it, so that's why I chose the Maroon Brown - it's darker which will help with any color transfer being noticeable.

I think the brown with the black dash and charcoal headliner looks fantastic - and the open pore wood I think compliments the brown and black very nicely.

Good luck with your decision!!

JLR had a nice guide for car buyers on exterior vs interior colour combinations they'd recommend.

As you can see in the attached picture, Black leather goes with almost all exterior colours, and amber/dark brownish/ maroon interior goes with darker exterior colours.

Lighter exterior colours don't go with lighter interior either, but darker colours are recommended.

EDIT: They even give recommendations on dashboard/ upper facia/ ceiling and carpet colour combinations to go with those seat colours.

Amber! The dye trasfer is no big deal. It comes up really easily with a damp cloth. I have a a leather cleaner (Chemical Guys) that doesn't have conditioner in it. it comes in a regular spray bottle which I used once a week in my garage; tales 3 minutes to wipe all the seats. The dye transfer really only happens on the outer edge where you get into the car. I put some of the leather cleaner in a small spray bottle (like the kind you get in the travel section at target for hairspray) and keep it and a microfiber under the rear hatch. That way I can clean it on the go if I have a client I am picking up. The amber color is unlike most interior leather colors and looks wonderful as a contract with a darker color. I think charcoal/black is just too common. It's also too hot for me!

A related question about 2018 Inscription with Brown interior. I bought a slightly used one and I realized that something is off in the interior - and the dealer said it doesn't have a custom option, leather dash for $1000 which is now standard in 2019. Not all 2017 and 2018 Inscriptions have it as Volvo was running short of Nappa leather. Is it true? It looks horrible (still bought because of the deal) with Momentum plastics with dark brown leather.

Question is - is there any way to add that back now? If it costs $1000 I am hoping it can be done now for about the same?

By upper facia, I meant the upper part and decorative portions of the dashboard and doors.

Mine has hard plastic and no one told me about having leather as an option on top of the dashboard and upper parts of the doors. Not even the online configurator had anything on upper facia leather at the time of my ordering.

But after the deadline for manufacturing changes kicked in, suddenly I started seeing RDesign cars having that leather. But I couldn't change my order to include it as it was over the change deadline.

I would have liked to add more class to my Inscription's interior with upper facia leather.
