I didn't think there was a transmission service. I have 130k miles and never saw that message.

Although VIDA does say this:
Automatic transmission
The oil does not normally need changing.
The oil must be changed if instructed in the text information display.

If I had to guess, your transmission fluid was past a certain time and temperature threshold. The TCM has 5-6 temperature windows (2 are within normal operating temp, the rest are well above) and it tracks the amount time the ATF spends in each window (forget the exact unit- either minutes or hours). Normally there shouldn't be any time spent in window 3 or above, so if your TCM logged anything there it probably triggered the service message.

The transmission is pretty easy to flush- I did mine in under 3 hours. Drain and fill should be even easier, which I'm going to find out this weekend. Btw the fluid is Mobil 3309 and is the same as Toyota Type IV

The problem here is that while draining and flushing may restore the fluid, it won't reset the warning since the TCM has no idea it's fresh. You'll need a trip to planet VIDA to do that.

Personally, I'd pull the TCM codes asap and then decide what to do. Again, VIDA required.

 

Guys, really. Do you believe that like the BMW claims this VOLVO tranny fluid never needs to be changed. I DO NOT! No matter what the fluid degenerates, 300k, 400k, 500k, 750k and never change the tranny fluid? How about the oil? I do not believe it. I'd suggest perhaps a 50% drain and re-fill w/new synthetic ATF @ 200k, I'm doing it. Good luck. Volvo could not be trying to keep their dealerships selling transmissions would they?
