Transmission Fluid Change?

So with my past Volvos, especially my 2004 V70R, I would change the ATF fluid every 50k. I can't recall if the manual claimed it was a lifetime fluid or not. But I did fluid changes anyway, pumping it out through the ATF hoses at the radiator.

With these new SPA cars and advanced AW transmissions, are they designed such that they really rely on a lifetime fluid, i.e. the transmission depends on all the suspended particles that will accumulate in the fluid since it's never changed? If so, I will certainly abide by the lifetime change interval. If not, I will go with my gut and change every 50-60k or so.

I changed mine at home at 60k miles. I believe the manual says to change it at 60k. I bought a fluid flush and fill kit from fcp euro or one of those parts sites. Pretty easy.

I had a 2002 V70XC. That transmission was failing so I did the drain and fill to save it. So now with the V90CC I'm taking precautions.

Thanks for the responses!

Anyone had this done at a dealer recently? Wondering how much it would cost. My car’s going in for its 60k service soon. Thinking it would be easy to have them do it all.

I had it done on my '18 XC60 T6 recently for my 50k mile service and the dealer charged me $422.52 for parts and labor so not that bad if you ask me.

I have 2018 XC60 T6 CPO. At 60K service the dealer recommended that transmission fluid be replaced. I didn't want to spend an additional $245 over the 60K service, and they told me I could go until spring before it needed changed.
The manual says the fluid is good for its "service life" whatever that means. So I will ask the dealer about this discrepancy.

It all depends on what kind of driving you do. They assume normal driving it'll be lifetime fluid, but if you live in a hot climate, tow, or are in stop and go traffic a lot. Then you should change your fluid.

Changing the fluid is cheap insurance. My old V70XC had lifetime fluid, until the transmission started dying. A fluid flush brought it back to life. So now I change it preemptively.

MY 01 V70 Cross Country, and my 4 other P2 Volvos,... and Howard's Volvo mant. site started me on a quest more than a few years ago. Flush the tyranny on a regular basis. Mobil 3309 from the Lubricant store.<<<<<< Purchase a case or 2, you will not be sorry!!!! Don't make the mistake of removing the "Drain Bolt," (do a search for volvo tranny drain bolt and know what I'm speaking about here,....) Flush all the fluids,.... the new ones have 6 different fluids. This Volvo life time fluid BS, is just that!!!!!!!!!!! The P2 trannys, AW, etc,... all of em, have an internal, non-replaceable compressed filter that does in fact gum up. Flushing on a regular basis does, seriously help.

"Level Ten" in Hamburg NJ,....made a racing, hill climbing tran for me more than a few years ago,....HIGHLY RECOMMEND THEM!!!!!! They will save your tranny when no one else will!!!! I purchased,...well more like was given, more than one 01 Volvo for zip,...all had tranny issues and had each one rebuilt,......THEY ARE ALL STILL IN USE! After being rebuilt by the fine folks in NJ. Each one of thes Volvos was being scraped because of tranny issues.

I'm thinking about buying the Aisin-branded fluid from FCP ahead of time and giving it to the dealership for the fluid change. Does anyone know how much the dealership will need for the official Volvo change procedure?

Unless you have a good relationship with your service advisor, they may not agree to that. If anything happened after using the Aisin fluid they could be at fault. But if they show they used the Volvo fluid and Volvo procedure then they are less at fault.

Another key thread to follow...

A trusted local shop (general automotive, not Volvo specific) recommended Transmission Flush and Rear Differential Service (I'm assuming they meant the AWD system, not specifically the rear diff) for the wife's S90 T6 AWD with +/- 65k miles on it. To the tune of $590+tax+fees ($440 trans, $150 diff).

$tealership recommends "A" Service/60K Mile service and specifically mentions replacing spark plugs, but not tranny or AWD fluid. Also for a wallet friendly $597+tax+fees.

Hmmmmm...

With my experience, the dealer goes by the book and unfortunately Volvo does not explicitly recommend replacing either those two fluids on a regular basis but only when the vehicle is driven under extreme conditions. When I brought my XC60 in for it's 50k service, I had them do the Transmission Flush out of abundance of caution and personal preference even though my SA said it didn't need it per the manufacturer guidelines. However, like yourself, I do plan to replace the AWD Haldex Fluid at around 60k miles.

I finally got the kit from FCP. But I was feeling lazy so I took it to the dealer to have them do the fluid change. They were fine with using the supplies and fluid from the FCP kit. Though when I got my car back I saw that they only used 4 of the 8 quarts of fluid I supplied. Does this mean they only did a partial drain and fill? Or do they have the means to pump everything out and put pure fresh back in?
